Big Trouble in Little China - 80s Kurt Russell thinks he’s the star but he’s actually the comically incompetent sidekick that slows down the real hero 😅😂 Highly recommend watching it 😎
You're absolutely right about how changing your look opens the door to different characters. I grew out my beard & let my hair grow to audition for a Western a while back. I got the role, which led to more roles, including another Western! Then I shaved & landed a role as Johnathan Kent in a fan film. Changing appearance makes a world of difference! Great react as always, V. See ya next time 😁
Men can have so many different looks, it's quite amazing. If I see an actor with a beard often, I sometimes don't recognize him without the beard. Grats on getting roles, that's not an easy task!!
This was one of the films that led to the creation of the PG-13 rating. This released the same year as Gremlins, Ghostbusters, The Terminator, Red Dawn, Conan the Destroyer, Beverly Hills Cop and A Nightmare on Elm Street
Harrison Ford once said Amrish Puri (the evil priest Mola Ram) is ironically one of the nicest people he’s ever known. Puri was so grateful for the role because it rejuvenated his acting career in India. All he had to do was keep shaving his head.
Temple of Doom is a "prequel" of Raiders. Mola Ram, the evil priest, it´s played by Amrish Puri, who was a well known indian actor who passed away in 2005. For me, the perfect description of this movie is... "Darth Indiana". A great original trilogy, being "The last crusade" my favourite. The OST, by John Williams of course, reminds me ALWAYS to Star Wars, specially themes like "battle of the heroes" or "duel of the fates", in the dreadful scenes.
44:09 - A lot of actors have changed their looks for a role, and that look has become their trademark. For instance, Richard Moll played bald, big-hearted bailiff Bull Shannon on the NBC series _Night Court_ (1984-1992; if you haven't seen it, it's hilarious!). Moll had shaved his head for his role in the movie _Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn_ (1983). The producers of _Night Court_ liked the look so much that Moll kept his head shaved for the entire run of the series, and became famous for it!
When the motors of plane stop (out of fuel), this is the same sound in Star Wars when Millenium falcon can't jump in hyperdrive. And Indiana Jones say the same replic : "we have a big problem"
This was filmed in Sri Lanka as the Indian government wasn't too happy with the portrayal of Hinduism. An important scene that got cut for time had Indy run into Captain Blumbertt while getting the fruit platter for Willie, where Indy tells him something's off about Pankot because no one should have eaten anything from that feast. It also sets up Blumbertt returning with his Punjab Rifles later.
Most of the tropes you saw in this and the other Indiana Jones films came from the serials of the 30's. 40's and 50's. Spielberg spent more money and made them more elaborate but they are essentially the same. It would be fun to see you react to one of those; they are the source for both Indy and Star Wars. You might try "Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe" or "The Tiger Woman."
Thanks, Verowak! 🧭 I love the opening musical number so much. Yes, 'Willie' is a damsel in distress trope (as most female characters in the 1930s were depicted)... and very irritating. But otherwise, I think it's an enjoyable ride. And I don't think it's a spoiler to let you know that it was pure lust between them, not love. You won't have to worry about seeing her again.
There were many, many strong female characters in 1930's films (c.f. Better Davis, Katherine Hepburn, Paulette Goddard, Barbara Stanwyck, etc., etc., etc.) Even in the serials, which the Indiana Jones films were based on, the female characters, though often in peril, were seldom week characters and often rescued the hero.
@@TedLittle-yp7uj I'm very aware of that. I was speaking of the trope... which is a trope because it was common enough to become a trope. Verowak will surely research more interesting female characters and performers, the more she watches. My mother raised me on Bette Davis. 🥂
Hello Miss Verowak!😊 There has been a lot of criticism over the years over Indiana's love interest and their chemistry in this one. Kate Capshaw would go on to become Mrs. Steven Spielberg. This prequel is my 3rd favorite in the original trilogy, even though Short Round is a fun character. The video arcade game for this film was quite popular. They used Voice snippets of characters from the film like Indiana saying "We walk from here!" and the Mola Ram saying "Welcome". The next film "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" is my favorite for many reasons.🏆 Great reactions to the Indiana Jones prequel, Vero!!!!🎬👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 I wrote my comments about Willie before your outro. The problem with the stories for the films really started here. I don't recommend the films past the 3rd film for that reason.
"Temple of Doom" had many positives. The main plot was great. Ke Huy Quan was wonderful as Short Round. The villain Mola Ram was great. The people of Mayapore were great. Roshan Seth was seriously good as the Prime Minister who chastized Jones for his rudeness. The deadly Thuggee ritual was terrifying. Seeing Indiana drugged into a crazed Thuggee was quite disturbing. Several Wilhelm screams were heard! 😆 Yes, Willie was annoying, and some of the stunts were over the top silly, but overall, this was a really good story. 👍
Im normally loving your reactions to whats happening on the show but was glued to your face watching you get increasingly annoyed by her. 😂 I feel your pain. The next one is the best imo ❤
I agree with your analysis: This movie is funny and back in the days, a way to sell more roller coasters in attraction parks but it's another Allan Quatermain pulp fiction. The first one is great. I do hope you will enjoy the third one. Sad there's no movie after the 3rd one... 😄The fourth is a video game for me. Oh, on another topic, have you ever seen the Goonies? IMHO, 1985 was the best year for any genre of popcorn american movies...
This one came out when I was probably five years old, which is right about the time I was the age that I still have significant memories of. I might've even seen this in the theater, but I'm not quite certain of that, but this is the one that does stick out as significant to my childhood. Though now, despite the nostalgia, it is my least favorite of the original trilogy, and maybe all of them. The third one, The Last Crusade, has really been my favorite since I first saw it in the theaters. No spoilers as to why, but I'm looking forward to you seeing it!
Spielberg had an affair with Kate Capshaw during the filming of ToD. This resulted in a VERY costly divorce for him, and afterward movies like Hook (which you really should see if you haven't already) had a lot of lines complaining about lawyers.
Great reaction like always. Indy didn’t get the girl. Steven Spielberg did. A few years after 'Temple of Doom' came out, Steven Spielberg met up again with Kate Capshaw (Willie)...they were both single and they fell in love. She converted to Judaism, and they are now one of the major power couples in Hollywood. Kate had a daughter from her previous marriage, who is also an actress. Her name is Jessica Capshaw, she is probably best known for her role on 'Grey's Anatomy' as pediatric surgeon Dr. Arizona Robbins. This is not my favorite of the Indiana Jones movies...the next one is. 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade' is by far my favorite. The idea of Mola Ram taking someone's heart out and burning it came from George Lucas, who felt his ex-wife did the exact same thing to him. There are some fun-facts about this movie. The exterior of Pankot Palace was realised through the use of both matte paintings & a set constructed at Elstree Studios here in the UK. The bridge & village sequences were filmed in Sri Lanka. Oh & the bats are fruit bats, not vampire bats. Harrison Ford suffered a severe spinal disc herniation by performing a somersault while filming the scene with the assassin in Jones's bedroom. A hospital bed was brought on set for Ford to rest between takes. Lucas stated, "He could barely stand up, yet he was there every day so shooting would not stop. He was in incomprehensible pain, but he was still trying to make it happen." The guard crushed by the roller was played by Pat Roach; the same actor who played the Nazi guard who is diced by the plane in Raiders!!! He also played General Kael in Willow. Keep up the good work.
I saw this when it first came out. I was very disappointed. In fact, it took me years to finally appreciate it for what it is. None of the sequels compare to the first film IMO.
1. Some folks don't care for this one very much, but I do. It's all kinds of fun. 2. Just small suspensions of belief regarding the lifeboat drop out of the plane, and the coal car landing perfectly on the tracks.🙄🙄 3. IRL Ford could fly that plane. 4. When I was in the US Navy I got to eat monkey (but not monkey brains) and tasted dog in the Philippines. 5 Shortround is "Billy Badass"🤬😎 6. Disneyland already has a "Raiders of the lost ark" so another one of the ride through the tunnel/mine would be cool too. Assuming you can afford it.😏 7. Kate Capshaw got the Willie gig because she was dating and later became Spielberg's wife. 8. Fun act: The guy that plays the guy getting crushed is the same actor that played the guy that goy hit with the propellor in "Raiders of the lost ark". 9. Coolest villain ever.👺 10. Recently one of his fedoras sold at auction for $600.000🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑
Mola Ram and the Thuggees! There are accounts and stories of violent Thuggee gangs terrorizing Northern India going back centuries. We get the word "thug" from the Hindi/Sanskrit word "thuggee", which means "swindler" and "deceiver". 😧
26:15 "A Voodoo doll?" Nope. A Kryta. Voodoo is an African religion that was brought to some areas of the Caribbean. It's not a thing in India. That said, this Kryta has the same magical connection to a person as a Voodoo doll would, so yeah, it's just a Voodoo doll in another language, culture, and religion.
The character of Willie is actually very appropriate given this is a prequel and thus Indy is younger and dumber. It makes sense he would chase after the loud dumb blond…every guy has done this, not all of us learn from it though. But it sets up his later maturity with Marion in Raiders.
I couldn't like WIllie from the beginning. she's insuferable. The very first thing she does is steal an antidote that could save a life, then tells the man she would willingly watch die; "I hope you choke". Great actress though. xD
Which screaming character did you most want to mute/muffle/throw into a bottomless pit? a. Willie Scott in "Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom" (1984) b. Vicki Vale in "Batman" (1989) c. Ruby Rhod in "The Fifth Element" (1997) d. Mary Jane Watson in "Spider-Man" (2002) e. Bobcat Goldthwait in "any of his films" 😁😁😁
I had hoped you wouldn't be so hard on Willie. But it seems to be the concensus among reactors. For me she's just a fun side character way in over her head. I get that people compare her to Marion, but bear in mind, Marion was raised by the very man who was the biggest influence on Indy. Willie is a show girl used to living a life in luxury.
@5:40 Kudos for noting the (in)famous "Wilhelm Scream"! I just noticed it today when rewatching Brian de Palma's "Scarface". It really is everywhere, and has an interesting origin story: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilhelm_scream
28:20 "They didn't remove her heart or anything." As much as I might have liked to see her bare chest, I'd not like to see her heart removed from it. Also, Spielberg might not have liked to get that R rating for that.
Willie is an unmitigated pest on an epic scale, but in her defence that's how she was written. Not much Kate Capshaw could do about it, not being the most versatile actress in a very constricted role. I did like her in Black Rain (with Michael Douglas and Andy Garcia), though.
Actually my favourite Indy film, with the first coming a close second and the third not too far behind that. Notice I don't mention the 4th and 5th. They're not in my personal canon. I would have liked to have seen an Indy 4 (or even 5) with Indy teaming back up with Short Round. Disney missed a trick there, even after Ke Huy Quan won the Oscar for Everything Everywhere All At Once. Willie was comic relief, that was her function. Without a comic relief character, certainly at the time, the film would have been too dark. Arguably she is badly written, she is over the top, but I'm not sure it has anything to do with her being a woman personally - I think any comic relief character - male or female - would have had to make a fool out of themselves to counter the darkness in this film. She just happened to be female, although females may well have been misrepresented generally in cinema at the time, so often only secondary characters - that I do agree with. Anyway, Kate Capshaw got a consolation prize for being often maligned for this role: Spielberg's hand in marriage.
Any comic relief character written like that would be on my list of least liked characters. Comic relief characters are tough to write and can really affect a movie, sadly
😄 Freeze the frame at 16:38. 😆 Not only did no woman on the planet have hair like that in the 1930s, but during the next three decades either. That style of coif did not come into vogue until the mid 1970s when an actress named Farrah Fawcett popularized it. Throughout this whole movie Kate Capshaw's hair is one big massive continuity error. It keeps changing into different styles, none of which could possibly be achieved without the help of a professional beautician. 🤪 The fëmme fatalé in the next film is slightly more believable as a woman of the 1930s. 😉
You it's really bad when Kate Capshaw herself really didn't like her own character that she played herself. I think I heard she even questioned the director along the lines of "she's screaming about far too much here, shouldn't she have stopped already?" It's a really big downgrade and step backwards from Marion Ravenwood who was at least competent and capable in the first film. Short Round was just brilliant!
"This female character is not my favorite by far..." Willie is a satire of damsels in distress, played to the max. You have to lean into the tropes to enjoy her.
Maybe it's because I saw this dozens of times as a kid, but Willie was just Willie. She's funny. Sure, Marion is way better, but I like they did something different. She's supposed to be ridiculous. Also as an action movie this is just top class. Hardly anyone can shoot an action scene as well as Spielberg.
Indy’s love interest should have been a cool Indian archaeologist or something, instead we get Spielberg’s girlfriend (wife) screeching and whining the whole time.

Chewbacca is 2nd.
Everyone else is far down the list.
the same actor that played Short Round also starred in the Goonies. Add it to the list if you haven't seen it already

At 24:51, BEST jump scare! I ALWAYS forget that moment in the movie and I've seen this a 100x times too. 😱😉😂
The actor leading Indy, Willie and Short Round to the plane was none other than Dan Aykroyd.
I'm sure he was on a mission from God... or Gozer
"He's the best sidekick ever!"
You know what ol' Jack Burton says at a time like this...
I have no idea who that is lol
Big Trouble in Little China
You’d love that movie 😂😎
Like I told my last wife, I says, Honey, I never drive faster than I can see. Besides that, it’s all in the reflexes.
Nice reference... Big Trouble in Little China is such a legendary 80s movie by John Carpenter
"Same thing. Could have been Anakin."
A literally LOL moment for me. Thank you!
I'm glad someone enjoyed that line!!! 🤣

V with the Airplane!, Jaws, and Star Wars references in an Indiana Jones reaction. We're teaching her well.
INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM and Gremlins are the reason why we have the PG-13 rating.

No time for loooove Dr. Jones.
Oh Indy, oh Indy,
Skies are so windy.
On one hand you have Willie.
On the other you have Short Round.
Yin. Yang. Perfectly balanced, as all things should be.
🤣
When the motors of plane stop (out of fuel), this is the same sound in Star Wars when Millenium falcon can't jump in hyperdrive. And Indiana Jones say the same replic : "we have a big problem"
The sound is actually the sound of a radial engine starting up played in reverse, so it's most accurate here.

Nobody cares what they think, they like cockroaches.
If you haven't seen The Goonies, you should check Ke Huy Quan in that as well.
If you loved shortround you should go watch The Goonies.. he is in that and its an absolute classic

It's a comedy it is not for myth busters lol
Some of the scenes in this movie were so horrific to the public, when it was first released, that it inspired the creation of the PG-13 rating.
Funny thing I only recently realized, Wuhan is a city in China, so Indy teamed up with someone else named after a place 😁
I saw this when it first came out. I was very disappointed. In fact, it took me years to finally appreciate it for what it is. None of the sequels compare to the first film IMO.

Great actress though. xD
7:31 lol. Nice Airplane joke.
Which screaming character did you most want to mute/muffle/throw into a bottomless pit?
a. Willie Scott in "Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom" (1984)
b. Vicki Vale in "Batman" (1989)
c. Ruby Rhod in "The Fifth Element" (1997)
d. Mary Jane Watson in "Spider-Man" (2002)
e. Bobcat Goldthwait in "any of his films"
😁😁😁
To borrow a Jaws quote: "You're gonna need a bigger pit."
I hate screaming, so a screaming character would never be a fun character for me lol
@VerowakReacts I completely respect that 😊
Funny to think of such a meat-centric meal, when, if I'm not mistaken, most Hindus are vegetarian.
Gotta remember she's a pampered showgirl. I think everyone forgets that. Kate actually played the role very well even though it was annoying
Oh she played the role really well. I still hate the character though
"He did not pass his OSHA safety certificate"😀
Steven Spielberg married the actress

A trilogy and 2 more movies
The hat looks good on you.
Thank you! I find that most hats suit me well :D
Your reactions are too cute
6:08 Dan akroyd! Your fellow Canadian
Huh! Who's a Moose?
@5:40 Kudos for noting the (in)famous "Wilhelm Scream"! I just noticed it today when rewatching Brian de Palma's "Scarface". It really is everywhere, and has an interesting origin story: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilhelm_scream
It usually takes me out of the movie for a bit when I hear it 🤣
Willy is widely unloved, so you are not alone.
The third movie is widely loved.
The fourth is okay. Just okay.
Skip the fifth if you can.
I'll watch all of them so I can see what they're like.
🤠👦👱♀
Willy worst character in all Indiana movies with best character short round
28:20 "They didn't remove her heart or anything."
As much as I might have liked to see her bare chest, I'd not like to see her heart removed from it.
Also, Spielberg might not have liked to get that R rating for that.
Don't feel bad, we all hate Willie.
Willie is an unmitigated pest on an epic scale, but in her defence that's how she was written. Not much Kate Capshaw could do about it, not being the most versatile actress in a very constricted role. I did like her in Black Rain (with Michael Douglas and Andy Garcia), though.
You must be a brave soul watching Temple of Doom! Thanks for sharing this 👏👏👏🤗
Oh so still: Thé Cancelled one..late 2024?
I'm so glad I saw it since I got to see Short Round!! 🥰
One or two production big shots were going through costly divorces and painted Willie in their current view of women.
:)
You call him DOCTOR Jones, lady!!

15:50 Oh dear..so, erh...boulders and a natural spire. Don't cut that! Right 2024+? 😕
I'm right with you on your review of this movie. It is my least favorite of the three and the one I have the least chance of watching if on tv.
Definitely good to see once though!
She is why this is my least favorite movie of the 5, but she worked on Spieilberg since they are still married.
Willie played by Kate CapShaw is Steven Speiberg's wife hence the shoe in for the part.
If I remember correctly they weren't married during the filming. They met during the filming
@@VerowakReacts Yeah, they got married 8 years after this.
"This female character is not my favorite by far..."
Willie is a satire of damsels in distress, played to the max. You have to lean into the tropes to enjoy her.
I don't like screaming, so I will never enjoy her character 🤣
@@VerowakReacts I like Marion much more
Maybe it's because I saw this dozens of times as a kid, but Willie was just Willie. She's funny. Sure, Marion is way better, but I like they did something different. She's supposed to be ridiculous. Also as an action movie this is just top class. Hardly anyone can shoot an action scene as well as Spielberg.
I knew Short Round was a hero character even when this first came out. If you listen closely, you can hear his own theme music playing in his scenes.
Indy’s love interest should have been a cool Indian archaeologist or something, instead we get Spielberg’s girlfriend (wife) screeching and whining the whole time.
From what I read, they weren't together during the filming. They met on set and got together a few years later
