    A few points:
1st, personally, i don't believe Taiwan has the conviction to be truly independent. Just one simple question, are it's young willing to take up arms to protect their own nation even against a larger power? From the resistance against their national service system, that doesn't seem to be the case. It is naïve, entitled even to believe that somebody will spend their own money and their own soldiers lives to protect your lives and country for free
2nd, that being the case. Is there really any difference between aligning with US vs status quo / reunifying with China? In both cases, Taiwan is submitting to another power.
3rd, however i opine there is a difference. US typically only cares for it's own interest or how much money it can make from you. Whilst for China, reunification is viewed as a return to the family.
    So which one is worse?

The KMT definitely have a claim to the mainland, but if most people in Taiwan want independence then they are entitled to it (but for now it is more advantageous to let the ROC continue to exist in Taiwan until democracy can be re-established on the mainland.)

Yeah, a question of names. There's no independent sovereign country just named Taiwan, in terms of international relations and for United Nations. The name itself atributed is Republica of China including several islands, Formosa-Taiwan, Kimoy, Matsu, some Spratly etc, and the continental china. As for United Nations there is one country named China, that is People's Republic of China, Beijing as capital.
So how many Chinas exist among the international community?

And we all must thank the emperor of China for giving that island Too the people, It was Famosa When the emperor of Japan gave it to these people, They are the ones who formed the nation of Taiwan.
And Taiwan has never ever been anything but independent in fact the emperor's temple is there in this nation because it is independent of China believe me the emperor knew what he was doing when he gave it to the emperor of Japan
