William Burroughs lived in Tangier for a few years while writing "Naked Lunch", and was heavily addicted to opiates. He left family back in the States, which also fits, plus the "dirham" currency. Nick Cave references literature a lot in his songs.

An underrated Nick Cave song. It sums up addiction pretty damn well.
