What is the meaning/significance of Songkran other than a playful water gun fight?

In the past, Songkran hasn't been this playfulness. The tradional Songkran is a kind of new year celebration. The family will be united during these holidays, wish each others a good fortune, make some merit, and wish the elders for a good and peaceful life. The water gun fight part was adopted after the part where the youngsters would splash water to each other for fun.

But theres always an issue about Thailand always connected to Khmer Cambodia. They always copy their cambodian culture and end up Thailand as the better one since they are more developed than Cambodia. Songkran is a cambodian word it just popularize by Thailand. Poor cambodians.

Songkran is a cambodian word? Nope. It's Sanskrit word "Sangkranta or Sangkranti". But Songkran (spells with an "o" and no "ta" or "ti" at the end is a Thai derivation of the word.
