  • We finish up our story of the post-Davidic divided kingdom. We will look at some pretty gnarly kings in the north and a few good kings in the south. In the end, exile is in store for both nations.

    When writing fiction, authors like to avoid using the same name or similar names for more than one character. This is to not confuse the reader. The Elijah and Elisha combo is very confusing to a reader, at least it confused me as a kid. However, it is sort of nice because it points to authenticity of the scripture because in real life you do have people are same or similar names interacting. If you were just making up the stories, you would not have named the prophets Elijah and Elisha.

      Yes, the names can be confusing. For those that get caught up with the names and are confused about pronunciations, just substitute a common name, like Steve, Doug, or Mortimer for the hard to pronounce names. It (usually) doesn't matter how you pronounce the names. What matters is what is going on in the passage and what is God trying to tell us when we read the passage.
