Indeed. It is using only air for many years. I can attest to this as I've owned a, light green, Hohner soprano since about 1992 (it's an 31 years old musical instrument)

@@dylanjordan4747I'm pretty sure they were confirming that, because Melodicas don't use air unless a key is being pressed. If you blow into one without pressing a key the air won't pass through unless you force it VERY hard.

But regardless does not really matter, Melodica is breath controlled, you don't control when you play by pressing the keys repeatedly, it's not a piano, the keys only control what notes you are playing , your breath controls when you are actually playing them.
TLDR; you play it more like saxophone that is keyboard shaped, than a piano that you blow into.
Edit: Unless you are specifically hooking it up to a hair dryer, then you play it like a piano.

I left my hair dryer in its warm mode rather than cool and the mouthpiece melted
kinda reminds me of 10 years old me pulling a plastic santa-boot over the light bulp of my desk lamp to get a red light...
needless to say that didn´t go too well :)
we use melodica to learn simple songs in school instead of using keyboard / piano
infinitely better than recorder for starting out

That has to remind me of this: using a balloon with a chromatic harmonica to make it sound like a bagpipe, where the player inserts the balloon into the first hole of his instrument for it to serve as a drone.
A diatonic one would work better as a bagpipe is also diatonic.
The melodica is such an under-appreciated instrument, we always see this as that one instrument we get to learn at primary schools and play the same damn songs over and over again, and us young generations poke fun at it by playing meme songs. But this instrument at the hands of a professional can turn this 'kid's music learning machine' into a serenading accordion-like sound by combining it with sforzando technique and vibrato by slowly changing the flow of the air from your lungs. Plus, I still could not believe this instrument was used in a Jazz band and the comments section being ran by 7th graders, it really is a versatile instrument and a geniuinely amazing contraption in portable reed organs.

At least in my case, if it hadn't been for Damon Albarn, I wouldn't have realized that I liked it.I don't know how it is in your country but at least in Mexico (where I'm from) they don't ask us for melodicas, but flutes. and to tell the truth, since I have an e to say that it is a beautiful instrument
@@cartondecawamas They use both recorders and melodicas in here, some predominantly Islamic schools also give out hadroh or Arabic percussion which consists of bass drum, darbuka, and other percussion instruments that I may give out the name but will need lots of explaining.

it's funny and awesome but bear in mind that with any sort of single reed instrument like accordeon, harmonica and this, blowing too hard might damage them, might want to look for a very slow dryer if you want to do this for real
