Very informative and to the point! Thank you! I've already changed the elements and they were in horrible shape due to our hard water despite having just changed them just over a year ago. I had to buy an Element Wrench for the stubborn one on the bottom, but the HWH is not reaching anywhere near the temp I've set so the thermostats are next! I also recommend taking a picture of the wiring configuration before disconnecting the wires.

After seeing you do this in 15 minutes I decided I could do it - I’m a beginner DIYer but this was so clear and easy I decided to go for it. Lowes sold a “tune up kit” with both upper and lower thermostat and the rods for only $28 - success!! You rock!

Factoring in time going to the store the get the parts and a trip to your house. Was the water heater easily accessible or in an attic? All play a part in costs of repairing things.

You did a nice job showing a direct replacement. What's missing is an explanation of why it's very important to take the picture of the existing wiring like you said although there is a chance someone was there before you and they may have made wrong connections but the customer should have told you so but didn't. But the importance of the safety(red button) is between the top connections 1 and 2 and then 3 is protected by the limit (red button). If either of the other wires are attached to 1 or 2 connections then you may have a serious condition because it's not protected. Just a thought. Nice video thanks.

Thank you. I have had to drain my tank twice in the last week trying to figure out why my hot water heater wasn't working. I'm pretty sure it's the thermostat. I've replaced the elements already and the guy that came out said everything on my hot water heater was good but the breaker kept popping so he replaced the 25a breaker with a 30a. But now I have to push the reset everytime I need some hot water. So I'll just replace the thermostat myself an hopefully that fixes it.. the water heater is only 4 years old so I'm hoping there's nothing internally wrong with the wiring

Its not to hard once you have seen it done before. Just ensure to shut the power off and maybe use your cell phone to snap a picture to ensure you get the wires back on the correct terminals but its straight forward. My 23 year old Kenmore Power Miser 8 is overheating and the pressure release valve is working and releasing scalding hot water. This happened a year ago and I turned off the breaker and let it cool for a day or two and turned the breaker back on and it's worked fine until now. Shut the breaker again and when on it still overheats after a few hours. So I suspect this is a faulty thermostat. Am I right in that or might it be something else like a faulty element? Each year I drain off the dirty water accumulated at the bottom so I think that has had something to do with its longevity. Our water here is excellent quality soft lake water that hardly needs treatment - primarily UV light as it leaves the municipal reservoir. Thanks for the excellent video. Do you have any experience with the new Heat Pump water heaters? They cost 3 times as much but only use about a third the electricity. Wondering how well they are holding up. I installed a Mitsubishi heat pump to heat the house 10 years ago and it has been flawless. Wondering if the water tank heaters as as reliable. Thanks again for the great video.
The replacement thermostats for my whirlpool are universal. Neither of them are the right length. Do they are not fitting into the catch system to hold them in place. Also the thermastatcontrol us in center instead of on bottom. Should I use these any way and if so how do I secure them in place

Great video and easy to follow instructions. I changed my heating elements a year or two ago as I accidentally blew them when I had to upgrade the wiring. Unbeknownst to me the previous owner didn't relabel the 240 down to 120 and I overpowered them. Very annoying. The tank is fairly old but still working okay. My wife noted there isn't enough hot water for a bath so considering a thermostat change based on this video. On a side note, curious why the audio has clearly been edited after the fact at various moments in the explanations. Something you don't want to share after the fact?
I noticed the same thing and I assume it's for legal reasons, not to advice water temperature (too hot, too cold) -- People love frivolous lawsuits these days

Excellent video, but I have a question for you, I replaced both thermostats and elements and still no hot water. I have power to both thermostats though and have have the temperature set at 120 degrees. Any suggestions would be great
Thanks. Shut the breaker off and then back on to ensure that both 110 volts legs are on. You can either check the power on the top of the heater or you can check the top two terminals left and right like we did in the video to ensure it was off and make sure you get 220 volts. Also you can check the reset button on the top t-stat, with the power on to the heater press and release it. Also check your wires going to your lower t-stat sometimes when the lower element fails it draws to much and causes the wire to heat up and break. The middle wire on the right (red) of the upper t-stat goes to the lower element. Check continuity between the two points to ensure that ones not broken. For the other wire test the lowest terminal on the right on the upper t-stat (black) and the terminal on the lower t-stat. The terminal where the wire doesn't just jump the t-stat to the lower element.

My water heater is somewhat involved to access. Last week or so it became apparent one of the elements had died on me. Once I went to all the trouble to access it and drain it I said... WTF... replace everything... parts are cheap. So I installed thermostats and need elements while I was there. Gleaned some info off of your vid here... thanks. It was right simple once I got the system drained and flushed out good.... but indeed... I drew me a wiring diagram before disconnecting anything!. Thanks.

@@TheDIYGuyDOTnet Gotcha on the "Thumbs up" And yes it was an easy fix. Both thermostats and heating elements were only $28 bucks bought as package. I also left the panels off for a while after installing the heating elements and pressurizing the tank to make sure there were no leaks. After an hour it was still bone dry. Job well done and I patted myself on the back. Thanks again......….

The insulation around my water heater's thermostats was significantly more of a pain in the ass, but I got it done. Hot water was lasting just shy of 10-15 minutes, even though it's a 60-gallon tank. In about 3 hours, I'll see how it's doing.
I wonder, are the retaining clips universal? That is, do each of the different brands of water heaters are have the same design of retaining clips so that I can use a generic brand thermostat?
Outstanding video! I had an issue with my water not heating after a little troubleshooting I notice some burn damage in the upper thermostat. I also notice that the insulation was a little damp. Don't know if the damp area cause the problem or vise versa. Any help with this dilemma would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!
Is it a Bradford White? I have had a bunch of them start leaking somewhere between the top electrical connection ( feed wire for the heater) and the upper t-stat. If that's the case the water is above the upper element then you will most likely need to replace the heater as its started leaking and if looks like its below or at the element you can check to see if its leaking around the element. How old is the unit?

It is possible to have one t-stat go bad. The upper one controls the lower one. I would recommend replacing both as they are not that expensive for a set. There's a link on our site to them upper around 14$ and the lower 9$ ish. So for a little under 25$ you can replace both might even be a kit with both for less.
Mine keeps needing to be reset but why? Once a day I have to reset it. What is the issue? I have ordered the new thermostats to be replaced but I’m curious as to why it keeps tripping.

Help 4 year old water heater whirlpool, bottom door area inside is all rusted, we discovered this when we got no hot water this am and had to hit reset on the upper reset button, better check the lower one while we had the power off and there is rust

Thanks. 9 out of 10 times running out of hot water will mean the lower element is not working. The top element is working and the hot water rises to the top where it exits the tank but without the lower element working the lower part of the tank will be cooler and then that is where the new cold water enters the tank though the dip tube. @@jessm1638 In my many years working on heaters. I don't think I once had to replace a top element. The bottom does most of the work and is lower in the tank closer to the sediment so it seems to fail more often. If your draining the tank to replace the lower one you could replace the upper one as well as its only another 8-10$ just to be safe.

Yes, correct you want to ensure you have most of the air out of the tank or at least above the top element as it could cause it to go off on reset and possible damage the upper element. Its best to run the faucet or whatever fixture is closest to the water heater until you get no air coming out then to be safe move to the next closest fixture and run that one as well.

I changed my thermostats but they didn’t come with replacement plastic covers and the old covers don’t line up correctly does it mater if it’s not an exact fit?
All the replacement t-stats I have seen came with new covers I guess they are cheaper if they don't include it. Those covers are in there so that if you open the cover you can't touch the wire while moving the insulation. As long as there somewhat secure and cover the wires you should be all right.
What is your view of better quality water heater...Should I look at A O Smith, Bradford White , or Rheem? The local big box stores around here carry those....Or are they all the same quality wise. I have my current one, Bradford White now for 15+ years. Reset button keeps popping. Am thinking it is the t-stat. Tested both elements and t-stats. They all get the correct power, so I am torn between replacing the parts for around $85, or being 15+ year old tank, just get a new one. No sentiments showing in water when showering or thru the facet....
Good question. I'd stat by check the warranty coverage, for water heaters they are 3 to 12 years. While you’ll pay a little more for a longer-warranty, Most of the ones with a longer warranty tend to have larger heating elements or burners that can speed up heating of the water and most have more insulation as well for less heat loss. I also look for brass drain valve rather then a plastic one, brass are more durable than plastic and it shows they didn't try and save a few extra $$. In my experience which was mostly 220 Volt electric heaters. For those we had a bunch of AO smith's that seemed to last at least 15 years or so had a few go 18 years then our supply house switched to the brandford and white and we installed a good amount of those as well and we seemed to get only 5-7 years out of them on average maybe a hand full that went 10 or so years. Most common problem with those seemed to be that they rusted out right around the top element where the bung was welded to the tank. A good amount of people complained to the supply house and they went back to selling AO smith. So we installed a bunch more of those and I would say we were getting a solid 10-12 out of the newer ones. The gas ones we did have for larger buildings were AO smith as well. I lean towards AO Smith just because of my experiences. Most of those were installed on city water which could have an effect on the life on the heater because of the chlorine. I haven't had much experience with Rheem although my parents have one in there house and I think its coming up on 6 or 7 with no problems and I also install there Performance Platinum gas tankless (ECOH200DVRHLN) in my new house but have yet to use it. But I just looked though reviews and I think on consumer reports or something similar and it was one of the top 3-5 tankless heaters. You should be able to get the parts cheaper amzn.to/2t8LTxb or amzn.to/2GlU4OB sometimes they are cheaper if you get them separately, Just get the same brand T-stats. With a new one you will get some piece of mind for a few years that you shouldn't have any problems, leaks ( not sure where the heater is located) and some cost savings as it should be more energy efficient and that you won't have to scramble to get a heater and install it when it does go out. (always at the best time of course). Hopefully that was more helpful rather then making it harder for you to make your decision. Good luck with which ever way you go.

I have a question I have a Whirlpool hot Water heater that just quit working It might be the heating elements need replacing but It has a computer unit on top and I hate modern day electronics on stuff that do Not need It Whirlpool wanted around 172 dollars for It then I found It on Amazon for 90 dollars but I still think that Is too much for something I hate, I want to bypass It and Install the older type of Thermostats that has worked well since before Integrated circuits but I Am afraid If It does Not work It will get too hot and explode so what do You think of doing that?
Your welcome. That doesn't do anything? or you hit reset and it over heats then goes back off onto reset? I'm guessing that its an electric unit and not a gas one correct? I would start by verifying that you have 220v going to the heater. I have had a few where the breaker trips only one leg so the heater was only getting 110v and wouldn't work. Once you verify that you have the correct voltage going to the heater. If the Control Board is getting electrical power (and correct voltage) but the Diagnostic Light is not lit, the Control Board should be replaced. if its lit some of the flash a code to tell what is going on with the heater. You could aslo turn the heater up a bit if its already warm/ hot so it powers the elements. Then you can test the elements to see if the power is going though the control board and to the elements. Not sure the model or the part # for the control board but if its a WP22003906 you can get it for around 35-45$ -> www.ebay.com/p/Whirlpool-Washer-Control-Board-WP22003906-100-01226-04/1876324895?thm=1500&chn=ps. It shouldn't as the top / main thermostat has and over heat safety that makes it trip and go off on reset if the water is overt heated and if the pressure relief valve is working it should relief the excess pressure though that. I don't think I would go that way I would shop around as I'm sure you should be able to find the control board somewhere else for less. Also not sure of the age of the heater maybe your better off just replacing with a non smart unit.
Our water is only warm not hot, and there isn't a lot of it. I checked both elements and the thermostat and all is good. Should I assume its the dip tube?

I'm hoping that's it - cause changing the elements and having to drain tank, etc seems like a lot more than i could manage....
You should be able to open the top inspection cover and hit the reset red button on the t-stat and get hot water maybe in 30 or so mins depending on how long its been out and used. See how long it lasts sometimes they will trip in a week or so sometimes a couple months. It most likely overheated and tripped. So replacing the t-stats should take care of it.

@@TheDIYGuyDOTnet well .....a trip in my attic revealed that my RUDD heater was installed in 1996... we've had work done it over the years, but always hired someone.... when i took the cover plate off the top, all I saw was the element.... when I removed the bottom cover plate, there i saw a thermostat - so I did press the reset button to see if maybe that would do the trick - will wait about 30 minutes, then check........... any other thoughts on my observation??
@@buetow63 If you heard a click when resetting it, it should get warm. Did it end up getting warm/ hot? Seeing that yours was installed in 1996 and that its in your attic I would think about replacing it in the near future unless they have a pan or something to catch and drain the water if it starts to leak. Sometimes they leak at the top of the tank or near the t-stat and also cause the t-stat to trip or go off on reset. Was any of the insulation wet within the inspection cover? There are both 220 volt and 110 volt water heaters out there. Its hard to tell from what your describing which one it is. You could click the link in the description and go to the bottom of the page an upload a picture of it. But because of the age and location I would think about replacing and a newer one shouldn't leak for a while and it should also lower your utility bill as it will be more efficient.

Excellent video! My top thermostat keeps tripping, so I have to reset it often. Pretty safe bet it needs to be replaced?
One thing I'd like to add --- the two thermostats should NOT be set to the same temp.!! the 2 thermostats have to talk to each other -- the Top thermostat should be set about 10 deg. Hotter than the bottom thermostat. So I'd set the Top thermostat to say 125°F. and the Bottom thermostat set to about 115°.
Replacing thermostats and elements and ran into a problem with some of the wires being too short to go back into the thermostat. There was no slack in the wire. Suggestions on how to safely extend the wires...they are about 2 inches short in each case.
I have also ran into that on some heaters. I was able to pull some wire down from the top connection. Now its a little harder as there foam filled/ insulated. You can use the same size wire and wire nut and extend them. Be sure its 10 gauge wire and a wire nut meant for 10 gauge wire.

Sorry for the late reply maybe you already discovered the problem. Sometimes a lower element can cause the breaker to trip but most of the time on a tripped breaker I find the heater itself leaking or moisture either in the main connection area or near either one of the t-stat inspection covers. If you don't see water/ moisture in or around the heater you might want to try and replace the lower element and see if that solves your problem. Good luck with getting it repaired. You don't have to replace both. I just find it better to replace in a set and for around 22.07 you can replace both. amzn.to/2zEc4Sv upper and amzn.to/2uGt8BZ lower. There may even be cheaper ones on there.

Lower thermostat went bad on my Bradford. 5 minute shower before running cold. Replaced the lower stat and showered for 25 minutes. Dip tube can also go bad but that would mean lukewarm shower water from the get go

Great Video. Very detailed and clear. Question Please. How do you test the reset button? My water heater is dead. When power is applied to it I get nothing. No sound to indicate the elements are heating. The reset button is pushed in and when I pressed it I thought it would pop out but it didn't. Seems to be stuck in place. Thanks. There really is no way to test the reset button.. It goes off because the water in the tank got to hot so you can run the hot water for a bit to lower the temperature in the water heater and then try resetting. If that doesn't work you will want to make sure the breaker fully reset. Shut it all the way off and then back on and be sure both legs of the breaker engage. Next you can open the top inspection cover and test the top to leads with a volt meter to make sure you in fact have 220 volts going to it. Be careful as you will be dealing with live electric. If both legs are on and you get 220v at the top t-stat then I would suggest replacing the t-stats.
I'm having the same problem with my Rheem model 71-40S but when I take the top plate off there's nothing there but foam insulation?
What about if the breaker goes off ? What could that be ? Thermostat? Heating elements ?

should you replace the thermostats when you replace the elements? I cleaned out my 50gal heater and sucked out all the salt gunk from the bottom and replaced the elements and anode because I was in there and the bottom element was badly covered and the anode was half depleted.
How do you know the thermostat is bad? After I replaced the elements and anode, it seems it does not heat like before.. I am suspecting the thermostats since that is all I did not replace. Do you have any advice?

Yes, They should fit. Only difference between most of the is how they tell you how hot the setting is. Some us just A,B,C , Some use warm, hot, some use actual degrees. Most of the time replacing the t-stats will solve the problem of having to always hit the reset button. Thanks for watching.
Quick i hope anyone have answer for me, for some reasons one of my element went bad I replaced it ever since that day my reset button keep tripping every 4-8 hours and when i push it back in my water get so hot even though i put on the lowest settings which is 90 degree and my water never used to get this hot before even though I used to have it on 125 degree can someone help??

It was the upper Thermostat that went bad now its been 4 months no issues.
Leo me just say that not all thermostats are easily removed. Top - I struggled to remove it bending it in the process. Bottom, still unable to remove. Feels like an invisible screw is holding it in. Rheem 38 gallon, 7 year old. Top element so loaded w/caked in broke sediment while removing it. (Called plumber-$100/ service charge / same an hour. ) cancelled. Refuse to give up! Read if holding wire breaks-- out of water heater.

Do you need to shut the valve and drain the Tank?
Thermostats are not easy to extract. I’m trying n not getting anywhere!
Why replaced thermostat?
why does everyone say to flip the break off as opposed to just unplugging the water heater? My plug is right next it, i just yang it out, maybe others are hard to reach or something?
Most water heaters are hard wired in so shutting the breaker is the only way to cut the power. Newer code calls for a service disconnect/ rated switch to be installed right next to or on the water heater to shut the power off.

@@Zhurak Yes, I would say its odd for any house to have an actual plug that the water heater plugs into even more odd that its an older house.

Water heater put out too much hot water
Yes, faulty t-stats can cause it to over heat the water or not maintain a temp. Sometimes they will overheat the water and then go off on reset. So in a day or so depending on how much water you use it may become cold.

@@TheDIYGuyDOTnet I purchased a new set of upper and lower t-stat from my local Ace hardware for $30 including tax. Took me about 20 minutes. I took pictures before so I wouldnt get lost. Its been running for about a week with no issues. This video was pure gold. thanks!
