I like the look of alloy but I find the composite more practical as they don't scratch other bikes when we load them up on the back of a truck. We do some massive group rides here twice a year and the bikes are transported back to the start point packed quite closely on a truck. Also when I have to lean the bike against a short wall at home, it doesn't scratch the wall and the pedal shows far less wear. I learnt this the hard way :)

I prefer composite because they don’t show scratches too much since the whole pedal is the same color even inside. But both do fade a little bit.

Y'all should try the RaceFace Atlas? I've absolutely loved mine. It's got that same concave shape that he was going on about with the TMACs but the forward and rear pins are also tilted toward the center of the pedal giving an awesome angle for the pins to bite into the rubber of your shoe. Keeps your foot from slipping forward or back off the pedal. Absolutely awesome!

  • @Incorruptus1

You start with shoes, well, I tried any of them, and with hiking, MTB riding, it happens than you need to step of the bike, go rough terrains, and so onward, which with MTB shoes is a thing. When you need to walk for a while I noticed I wanted a cross design between MTB shoes and hiking shoes, and coming out in the middle I simply end up using boots, so like army type boots.
For grip, better with hiking and rough terrain, great rubber grip on flat pedals and all over safety for the foot, specially toes. and when it happens that you come of your pedal, you got some extra height of material on the boot to end up without scratching your lower legs, so more safety. And being out there safety means all right.
Last not least as for material of the pedals itself, I tend to look at the type of terrain as well, since more rocks make me prefer composites since of the dampening when hitting a rock, aluminium in cross terrain and more wood line, forest areas, and when you want something of both worlds, I end up choosing titanium pedals, since they are in the middle of use and function of composite and aluminium, the other possibility is magnesium, yet they're rare, and I have to be honest not to like their designs much. I use Brave pedals or Crank Brothers. The Brave is my favourites, they have this XL model, extra flat, 3 bearings, simply awesome in design and comfort and use.
So yeah I wanted to add this to the comments. Thank you for your great elaborations and reviews and advises. Good work!

@worldwidecyclery Another great video! I'll admit, I am not riding MTB specific shoes, but have been wanting to get some for a while... I'd love to see a video from WWC about different shoes...
As for me, I am running a nice set of green RF Chesters, and love them! It's crazy at how sticky they are (even with my non-MTB shoe...lol!). However, I do wear a size 12 shoe. The pedals haven't necessarily seemed small to me, but after looking at some Stamps online a few months back and noticing that they have a size large, and now from your video showing the large is good for someone with shoe sizes between 10-15, I do wonder, what is the size difference between say the large Stamps and the RF Chesters... I guess I could have simply compared the specs online in less time than it took me to type out this comment/question, but hey.. I'm quarantined, so what else do I have to do!? Stay safe everyone!
Thanks again for the video, and looking forward to whatever the next one is! :)

I nearly cracked one of my Race Face composite pedals in half. I'm definitely running aluminums for now on. I guess Race Face didn't expect an ape like me to jump onto a bike. We'll see how I like the DMR V12's

My personal choice is the Nukeproof Neutron composites. Very grippy and durable.

Was going to change the plastic pedals that came on my little voodoo bakka bike but the more I have looked at different videos on YT think I will stick with what I have as I'm only small, very small adult and a uk size 2 shoe 34 European size and only a weekend rider.

I replaced my good old DMR v8 alloys with the composite crank brothers stamp 1, because purple. Initial notes, my foot keeps slipping off the pedals and I have a bit less confidence in them now.
I'll probably go back to the DMR's when they come back from the anodizer for their touch up.
With the DMR's, I have grip for days, they're the old ones with the cup and cone bearings and have lasted me ages, I also pulled the static pins out and threaded them for more pins like the v12.

I ride fooker pedals. If you don’t know what they are, they are knock off race face chesters for 30 bucks. Pretty great pedals but probably going to get the actually chesters on my next bike

I'm currently trying the chromag dagga for the first time, removed a couple of pins in the rear they are pretty perfect tbh they nailed it...
Hard shoes are not for me I have bought all sorts of MTB specific shoes for flats but I'm always wearing softer DVS or emerica skate shoes... Monkey feets I guess 🙈

I got some wellgo flat pedals that i kinda stole off of a broken in half walmart bike that I found. Probably one of the best pedals i've tried.
