Dave, your infectious enthusiasm for your work is always a pleasure to watch. Working with culverts was actually part of my job as a land drainage engineer, I like the pipe spear you guys made, it got the job done. For smaller culverts we used an old truck tire tied to a steel rope, push the free end through with drain rods, then hook it up to an excavator and drag the tire back through like a pipe cleaner.
We could use your expertise here Neil, we got more than 1 culvert pipe plugged up, although not as bad as this one was. Thank you for the nice comment and glad you enjoyed. Really appreciate your taking the time to watch and may you have a very good day my friend.
The rocket pipe looked great, they guy who made it sure did a good job, it cut through the blockage easily by the look of it, sure was a lot of pressure the way the water surged out when it broke through.
Elton John may write a song about that Rocket Pipe instead of Rocket Man.... :-) There was a huge pond behind that pipe and it drained for days Cedarcam. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video my friend and may you have a very good day.
We didn't have too many options Scotty, at least it's done and no one got hurt. Thank you so much for taking the time to check out the video my friend and may you have a very good day.
Nice video Dave, always something on the railway to watch and learn about, 72 inch culvert pipe is a big pipe to get blocked up, thanks for sharing. Cheers and stay safe
Thank you Pete. Everyone knows how important it is to have drainage in the track, but drainage beside the track is just as important. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video my friend and may you have a very good day.
Turning a steele pipe into a giant needle and using an excavator for a precission operation to aspirate fluids from the patient in pain 😅 Simply great! Love this channel ❤
Your pretty much right about that froop! :-) Great to hear also you are enjoying the home movies. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video my friend and may you have a very good day. Some excavator operators think bigger than others Michael.... :-) The guys all did a great job who were involved in this project. Everyone knows how important it is to have drainage in the track, but drainage beside the track is just as important. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video my friend and may you have a very good day.
"I love it when a plan comes together!" George Peppard on A-Team Wondered just how that pointed pipe would work out. It worked a treat!! Can you imagine the stress that relieved? Boy, that water FLEW! Now you'll not need to make snother snakehead for next time. Glad that is done!
Your right Trena, it worked out pretty darn well, actually better than we expected. It was a treat.... Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video my friend and may you have a very good day.
Everyone knows about how important drainage on the track is Steve, but drainage beside the track is pretty important also. This pond would have sooner or later started compromising the fill the track was laid on. Glad to get this one done. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video my friend and may you have a very good day.
Your right about that Beverly, always something new going on around here, but I do like variety. Some one else wanted to know instead of the slow kids, what about a fast kids at play sign.... LOL Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video my friend and may you have a very good day.
Well that was different Dave! So many different aspects to keeping a railroad running smoothly! The 'rocket' pipe was a great solution and no doubt the welder liked the challenge of something different. Thanks for sharing Dave...where there's a will, there's a way!
Your right about that Richard, everyone knows how important it is to have drainage in the track, but drainage beside the track is just as important. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video my friend and may you have a very good day.
Your right about that, maybe not so much now, but many years in the past it was Frank, although we still use pointed slate bars and pointed lining bars and pointed drift pins a good bit on the RR. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video my friend and may you have a very good day. Good evening Dave 🌙, FYI: Here at the Cooperstown and Charlotte Valley Railroad we had a 32 inch corrugated pipe that the Beavers plugged up. On the upstream side at the headwall of the pipe. It's about 30 feet down to the headwall. We cleaned the dam away, water was flowing. We noticed a sinkhole on the downstream side of the track behind It's headwall. Further investigation found a 8 inch vertical separation between the two pipes at the joint 20 feet back in the hill. Only way to fix it was to carve into the hillside, remove the bad pipe, sleve in a 24 inch HDPE corrugated pipe 70 feet in and out the other side and backfill. Big project. Pictures on your cellphone 📱 📷 . Time to bring out the winter clothes and stay warm my friend. Stay safe and have fun 👍. Richard Bause Cooperstown and Charlotte Valley RR.
I do remember those pictures Richard, and what a big cjob that was. Wasn't there a cow involved in the engineering of the project too.... :-) Everyone knows how important it is to have drainage in the track, but drainage beside the track is just as important. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video my friend and may you have a very good day.
You have the type of job that I wish I had when I was working - Never get bored - Always "something" that needs done. Thanks Dave, for having us tag along as you go about your duties.
I could never work at an assembly line or something like that, same thing over and over and over all day. Although I loaded barges for a lot of years, stuck in one place for 12 hours doing the same thing. This track job is the berries with all the variety trainman2k. Thank you Mojo, your right it was neat. Wish I could have been there when they did it, but I wasn't. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video my friend and may you have a very good day.
Your right it did Wilbur. Now we need to somehow get down there and clean out the other end of that big culvert pipe, or sooner or later that small pipe will get plugged up. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video my friend and may you have a very good day.
You know as well as anyone that statement Ian. Drainage on the track is vitally important but so is drainage beside the track. This was going to sooner than later compromise our fill under the track with all that water backed up there. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video my friend and may you have a very good day.
Our town crew uses a backhoe to shove a tree trunk through the culvert to clear out the blockage. We have since gone to using smooth walled plastic culverts. It doesn't fully prevent beavers from damming them up but does make it harder for them. As a last resort our town has a professional trapper on call. Cool video!
Double wall pipe is the way to go poowg. In our excavating business that's all we use. We've had other culvert pipes plug in the past and have called in a pro trapper, one time he got 14 beavers out of one small area. Pesky little rascals they can be. And they are on RR property with no safety training or wearing any PPE.... :-) Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video my friend and may you have a very good day.
Thank you Lewis, the guy who built that pipe used to work in a fabricating shop, he's pretty good at making stuff. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video my friend and may you have a very good day.

Always a problem some where, but that was a good solution to the problem. To bad they can't get down there to clean out that head end when needed.. good stuff Dave.. 👍👍
Thank you Pappy and your right, it needs to be cleaned out on the other end but it wasn't. Sooner or later that will plug up again. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video my friend and may you have a very good day.
I can believe it Chris. We've had several culvert pipes to get plugged by beaver in the past. Pesky little rascals they can be at times. We had a professional trapper come in a couple of years ago on another culvert pipe they plugged up Keith. In one weeks time he got 14 beavers out of there. One of them was huge. They had plugged up in that spot a 36 inch and a 60 inch pipe. They are ambitious rascals for sure. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video my friend and may you have a very good day.
O worked at a sawmill for a while. We had our own older than dirt fire truck. Boss had me use it to blast out a culvert one time. It was fun but once was enough. Im no culvert cleaner.
I bet that was hard work Tire Ballast Service, I don't blame you for not doing it again. Really appreciate your taking the time to watch and may you have a very good day.
now i wish i could clean mine out that way but ill be using a set of tires and chain and hoping my BX23S Kubota has enough power to pull them through to clear it out fingers crossed lol

ive seen people use a some sort of cable or rope and a small tire attached to the middle and when its clogged you pull it through one way and when clogged again pull it through the other
That may have worked pretty well here, but we would have had to got a skin diver in to get down into the other end of the pond to do it. Will they take a backhoe down there at some point and rip out the blockage, or is the upstream watershed short enough that it doesn't need to have 72 inches of clear pipe to maintain the drainage? I'm a little surprised they don't have a flat car on a siding for hauling larger loads like that pipe. Was that pushing the capacity of the boom truck, weight-wise?
They sure do need to take an excavator down there and clean the other end of the pipe out MusicByWinston. But most likely it will never happen. It's very steep hill and they would have to cut a road in from the side to get a machine down there. It will plug up again if they don't tho. We used to have a flat car way back but someone back then decided we didn't need it.... sigh Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video my friend and may you have a very good day. Hi Dave, my name is Matt, I was a Conductor and Engineer with CSX for 7 years. Out of Connellsville and Newell. I never heard of Cumberland Mine RR until now. Does the train run on weekends? I'd like to drive down and watch it go by some day.
They typically run 24/7 Matt. However there is never a set time table, it all depends on the amount of barges they can get in and on how the prep plant is running. When everything is going well we run 6 round trips per 24 hours. If no barges, no trains and if plant is down with no coal, no trains, so it's always a crap shoot. Shoot me an email and we'll exchange phone numbers peppypetsdaily@yahoo.com I've been to Connellsville yard several times, 35 minutes from here.

Thank you for this video! The state legislature should pass a law requiring beavers to get training, pass an exam, pay a fee and get a license before participating in dam-building. Would that stop the dam-building?
Your right about that Robin, plus take safety training classes, wear appropriate PPE and be policed by OSHA. :-) I've yet to see a beaver on RR property wearing his hard hat and safety vest nor eye protection when cutting trees. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video my friend and may you have a very good day.

Nope! Nope! Nope! Not ready for 20° nights! It's still in the upper 70's and lower 80's for us! It's usually closer to the end of November before it starts getting down below freezing at night. We haven't had our heat on but one night so far this fall and that was because I'm a sissy when it comes to being cold!
It's coming Jughead, but this video had been taken late last winter. We've had several frosts already here, still in the 60 and 70 during the day tho. Guess that means you won't be heading north for the winter then??? :-) Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video my friend and may you have a very good day.
@ccrx6700 growing up my family spent most of our time in the deep south on military bases. When pops retired we moved closer to my mom's family in North East Indiana. Before that I'd only seen snow one time in my life. It snowed a couple inches at Ft. Hood Texas in the middle of the night but it was gone shortly after the sun came up. The first winter we had in Indiana we had 16 foot snow drifts in front of our house and it was 40 below for 6 weeks! I couldn't wait to get my rump back down below the mason Dixon line! Part of the reason I love east Kentucky so much is because of the weather. We'll have a few snows every year but they only stay on the ground for a few days before melting away. Our summers are overly hot either. I have a sister in LA (lower Alabama) when it 110° there we are in the mid to upper 70's. It's odd for us to see many days near 100.

I just read an article about LNG by a professor at Cornell University. He said that coal can have less overall negative impact on the environment than burning LNG. I would imagine that is because of the energy needed to liquify the natural gas, and then transport it for thousands of miles in ships. Then there is more lost energy on the other end to turn it back to a gas, so it can be delivered to consumers. All those losses add up to a lot of carbon dioxide being generated, just to deliver it to where it can be burned, or used as a chemical feedstock. So it looks like coal will be used for some time yet. I see the Feds just approved a new oil export facility in the Gulf of Mexico off the Texas coast. Jim Cramer was on CNBC TV broadcasting from a Chevron oil platform 115 miles off the Louisiana coast. The head of Chevron told him that the deep oil field they just opened up will be producing oil for between 20 and 30 years. He speculated that there is a lot of oil remaining in the deeper parts of the Gulf, 3 miles below the surface. He said the pressure down there was 20,000 pounds per square inch, so they had to develop new technology to drill that deep. The platform is sitting in water a mile deep. So that is 4 miles of drill pipe to deal with. You know there must be a lot of oil down there to spend that kind of money to get to it. The platform has about 100 people working on it.
That's just what I say about all this environment thing. They only count the final thing and not all the process to make it. Like here in UK We get wood chips all the way from Canada to burn instead of coal in a plant that was supplied directly from the mine next to it. We also get LNG in ships from thousands of miles away.
Very interesting to hear about the LNG Bill. It's nice to have actual experts write stuff like that instead of having news reporters do it who have an agenda to satisfy their readers political views. Anyway now we should have 4 more years of coal production after the recent election results. I hope he again takes us out of the Paris Accord. The last administration a couple of years ago approved another oil platform in the Gulf which got him in some pretty hot water with the greenie people over that. If there's one thing we need, it's more energy from a variety of sources. The demand for energy is tremendous and growing . Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video my friend and may you have a very good day.

Is someone going to clean out the upstream side of the 72" pipe? Will these drainage pipes be checked and cleaned out regularly to prevent this from happening again?
No one cleaned out the upstream side Jim. Don't ask me why not because I don't have an answer for you. It would be a real pain to do as to get back to that pipe you'd have to cut in a road in the fill. Eventually that small pipe will get plugged up and then more of a mess to deal with will happen you are right about that. @@ccrx6700 Use water hoses to widen the pipe opening from both inside and outside (hydraulic mining), cut out exposed roots and branches, repeat until opened up enough. Water can be pumped up from nearby lake (into a settling tank) or brought in a tank car. Should be lots of fun (for the young guys).
@jimbrown2769 for the young guys thats right. We had hulcher out at another plug pipe bout 7 years ago and they used air pressure off their truck to do it. Water would prob work better tho 😊👍

We could use your expertise here Neil, we got more than 1
culvert pipe plugged up, although not as bad as this one was.
Elton John may write a song about that Rocket Pipe instead of
Rocket Man.... :-) There was a huge pond behind that pipe and
it drained for days Cedarcam. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video my friend and may you have a very good day.
Pretty ingenious to cut the pipe like that and shove it all through. That is a great example of the K.I.S.S. philosophy. Thanks, Dave! 🤠👍
We didn't have too many options Scotty, at least it's done and
no one got hurt. Thank you so much for taking the time to check out the video my friend and may you have a very good day.

Good evening Dave 🌙,
FYI:
Here at the Cooperstown and Charlotte Valley Railroad we had a 32 inch corrugated pipe that the Beavers plugged up.

Time to bring out the winter clothes and stay warm my friend.

I liked that pipe they made! Looked like it worked like a charm too.
Your right it did Wilbur. Now we need to somehow get down
there and clean out the other end of that big culvert pipe, or
sooner or later that small pipe will get plugged up. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video my friend and may you have a very good day.
Just shows that it is important to keep an eye on your off track items Dave
You know as well as anyone that statement Ian. Drainage on the
track is vitally important but so is drainage beside the track. This
was going to sooner than later compromise our fill under the
track with all that water backed up there.
In our excavating
business that's all we use. We've had other culvert pipes plug

Now to control the beavers! They could plug a 72" culvert in one day.
We had a professional trapper come in a couple of years ago
on another culvert pipe they plugged up Keith. In one weeks time
he got 14 beavers out of there. One of them was huge. They had
plugged up in that spot a 36 inch and a 60 inch pipe. They are
ambitious rascals for sure. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video my friend and may you have a very good day.
O worked at a sawmill for a while. We had our own older than dirt fire truck. Boss had me use it to blast out a culvert one time. It was fun but once was enough. Im no culvert cleaner.

ive seen people use a some sort of cable or rope and a small tire attached to the middle and when its clogged you pull it through one way and when clogged again pull it through the other
That may have worked pretty well here, but we would have had

Canadian National use to employ Beaver trappers to protect the right of way. How about a beaver hat for winter?
We've had a professional trapper come in here for a plugged

Will they take a backhoe down there at some point and rip out the blockage, or is the upstream watershed short enough that it doesn't need to have 72 inches of clear pipe to maintain the drainage?
I'm a little surprised they don't have a flat car on a siding for hauling larger loads like that pipe. Was that pushing the capacity of the boom truck, weight-wise?
They sure do need to take an excavator down there and clean the other end of the pipe out MusicByWinston. But most likely it will never happen. It's very steep hill and they would have to cut a
road in from the side to get a machine down there. It will plug
up again if they don't tho. We used to have a flat car way
back but someone back then decided we didn't need it.... sigh

However there is never a set time table, it all depends on the amount of barges they can get in
and on how the prep plant is running. When everything is going
well we run 6 round trips per 24 hours. If no barges, no trains
and if plant is down with no coal, no trains, so it's always a
crap shoot. Shoot me an email and we'll exchange phone
numbers peppypetsdaily@yahoo.com I've been to Connellsville
yard several times, 35 minutes from here.
Always use tag lines when hoisting!

The state legislature should pass a law requiring beavers to get training, pass an exam, pay a fee and get a license before participating in dam-building. Would that stop the dam-building?
Your right about that Robin, plus take safety training classes,
wear appropriate PPE and be policed by OSHA. :-) I've yet to

vest nor eye protection when cutting trees.

It's coming Jughead, but this video had been taken late last
winter. We've had several frosts already here, still in the 60 and 70
during the day tho. Guess that means you won't be heading
north for the winter then???

Methane leaks into the atmosphere and it is a much more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide in the short term.
Very interesting to hear about the LNG Bill. It's nice to have
actual experts write stuff like that instead of having news
reporters do it who have an agenda to satisfy their readers
political views. Anyway now we should have 4 more years of
coal production after the recent election results. I hope he again
takes us out of the Paris Accord. The last administration a
couple of years ago approved another oil platform in the Gulf
which got him in some pretty hot water with the greenie people
over that. If there's one thing we need, it's more energy from
a variety of sources. The demand for energy is tremendous and
growing .

Don't ask me why
not because I don't have an answer for you. It would be a real
pain to do as to get back to that pipe you'd have to cut in a
road in the fill. Eventually that small pipe will get plugged up
and then more of a mess to deal with will happen you are right
about that.

@@ccrx6700 Use water hoses to widen the pipe opening from both inside and outside (hydraulic mining), cut out exposed roots and branches, repeat until opened up enough.
