Mark King the lead singer and bass player is renowned as one of the best bass players. He has a unique sort of thumb slapping technique. The 80s was a time when bass was quite prolific in most songs. Level 42 are still going today. Check them out live as Mark King usually plays bass solos.

Level 42 is based in the UK, so this tune was released there first in fall 1985. It didn't start getting airplay in the US until February 1986. The band's lead vocalist and bassist Mark King, was known for his slap bass technique, having been a drummer since the age of 9.

On the short list of songs that epitomize the 80s. Or at least the mid-80s.

Mark King is known as one of the best bass players ever - he’s also the lead singer. I loved their music when I was growing up. Properly good tunes, excellent lyrics and slapping bass! (I’m from a Musical family so a groove would always catch me!). Get to know some more of their stuff because it’s excellent x

Great observation Stan. Larry Graham of Sly and The Family Stone is credited with being the first to incorporate slap bass into his style. Also I'm not positive but this bass sounds like a Shuker Bass sound. Shuker is a brand that seems to be favored by UK Bass Players.

right on for your react. this song is s-tier for well crafted 80s pop songs. i wonder if you might like Naked Eyes - Promises, Promises (catchy bass lines). The Jellybean 7” Mix takes this song to a whole other 80’s level.

    Hello Stan,
I’m writing to you one last time. I apologize for being over verbose and over enthusiastic. Please don’t take it out on the artist for my stupidity. Your reaction was correct the artist is someone special. I’ve been looking to reactors I like and have since discovered over the time for reactions. As I did for Carpenters and others. I know I’ve commented and requested from you in the past. But whatever I did, I’m sorry. The last thing I wanted is to do anything to offend you. I feel I have. Thank you for your time and reading this.

@@Lifewithstan2020 I’m writing about Tori, who disappeared. I thought you’d know. I figured I said something wrong. I know her stuff doesn’t get struck. You gave a beautiful reaction. Then it was gone. I’m still sorry if I said something wrong. 🙏

@@Lifewithstan2020 OMG, that’s the first time since October that that has happened. I took it as something I did. Thank you. They’re all original or licensed covered, that she’s done. There are numerous reactions to Georgia that went up and stayed up. Is it under review? I’m not totally familiar with your side but have seen issues with certain big acts. I had all happen to me, unrelated, in a short time and took it hard. I apologize for that. It was a bad week. You just helped me clear the last hurdle. I’ll take a deep breathe and try to be better, too. Getting old sux. Sometimes you have to learn to go with the flow. Later I’ll request her version of the Bacharach Medley which hasn’t been struck, either. She self produced it, with a music track I think she licensed. Georgia was produced with her as vocalist. So the producer didn’t strike it he made it with her.
Be well, you made me well.
      Joe

You ever see the South Park episode "Christian Rock Hard"? Given your comments I think you might get a chuckle out of it. Season 7 Ep 9.
