    • J. Prince Talks Drake ... -~-
    If we were to match top rappers of this generation to their predecessors in previous Generations, I always imagined that Drake is the best paired with Jay Z. Drake is this generation’s top selling rapper, he owns a sports team, he releases new music relentlessly, all much like Hov in his prime. Kendrick Lamar spoken often about his love and respect for Tupac, but he’s probably closer to an Andre 3000 type artist-not afraid to take sonic risks, his music goes over a lot of people’s heads. Future’s definitely the evolution of Lil Wayne. Then there’s J Cole. J Cole is undeniably this generation’s Nas. Let’s break it down.

      Walter Bottler nah that's when he became internationally known with cash money in the early 2000's he was already well known and was making lots of money with them and look at all the new school rappers he influenced some new artists consider Cole and Kendrick and Drake old school artist who say Wayne has inspired then

    J Cole is a great rapper, whether he's at Nas's level is up for debate but I don't know how some people can claim he's a bad rapper when 21 Savage is one of the hottest out right now. We're blessed to have Cole and Kendrick right now considering how many trash rappers are popping at the moment. I loved Cole's new album and have been bumping it since it dropped.

      HighriseSuicides "No Advance" and "No Heart" are better songs than anything in Cole's discog.
      What matters the most is the music. 21 Savage has two better beats than anything Cole has ever put out. 21 doesn't sound as flat on a beat as Cole does. Both J Cole and 21 Savage aint really saying shit. So 21 is the winner.

    J. Cole is my new favorite artist but never compare him to Nasir Jones catalog. It's funny how everyone praise Illmatic as they should but It Was Written is what I became after hearing Illmatic. Meaning true Nas fans grew with him on every album....How dare you say I Am isn't talked about. I Am was supposed be a double album but because of heavy bootleg it wasn't. Name a wack bar on I AM. The Warm Up and FNL aren't albums. Those are mixtapes. Coles album making has never reached the heights of his early mixtapes. There's quite a few rappers like that. There's an entirely different pressure making an album compared to a mixtape. Cole folding on Sideline Story by putting on that Workout joint is a perfect example of caving into pressure of a major record label.

    Bullshit, "The world is yours" video had Nas in a Scarface theme in 94, "Fast life" video with G.Rap ft. Nas was Mafioso in 95 and AZ's "doe or die " album ft. Nas came out in 95 was on some Don shit and was all classics a yr before "It was written" dropped in 96. So if you really wanna get technical, Nas was on that shit before Big and Jay. I think they really took his style and ran with it to be honest. There's actually a video of Big and Nas freestyling and their chorus is called the "goodfellas" est. time early 95. Why do you think Pac called Nas "the ring leader" on that "Realest shit I ever wrote" track?
    I think Nas's "It was written" is actually on par with Jay's "reasonable doubt" and Big's "ready to die" (all 3 Classics).
    And though I dont agree, I know many people who say that Nas's "I Am" is a classic album (4 out of 5 star album imo). But since the common opinion is Nastrodamas was Nas's worst album back in 99', Jay took it to his advantage when they battled 2 yrs later and said the infamous "1 hot album every 10 yr average" line and people for some reason took that quote and ran with it, when it's actually far from the truth. Because all those albums went platinum when you look back.
    So know your hiphop history homie!! Jay wanted Nas's spot for being "most lyrical", that's why he went out his way to try and discredit his work to glorify himself.
    But it all came back and backfired on Jay because people knew what he was trying to do! Which was the real reason he lost the battle. It wasn't just about which song was better, it was was also about Jay trying to erase Nas's legacy. And the people saw it clearly from a mile away lmao!
    P.S J. Cole is dope too btw!!

Nas is such a lyricist you forget a lot of his lyrics are geared to street things(drugs, guns, money) but he's such a lyrical genius and his music has so much substance you forget. Now he does make conscious songs but illmatic and it was written were very much geared to the streets.

    I feel like Nas and Cole are 2 artists worth comparing. not because the flows are the same or that there message is the same, but because they can both make songs that make grown men have to sit back and analyze the emotions running through them while they listen.

    Im a pretty big Cole fan and I felt this last album. The tracks were mellow and there was alot of heart and feelings in them. I liked it, I bumped it, and theres a few songs I'll keep bumping. However, I feel like I will be playing FHD way longer. I appreciate the new album but it wasn't as much fire as it was worked out to be and thats ok.

    It's sad being a longterm Cole fan and seeing his worst work being the most successful. Nothing will ever top Friday Night Lights. I will consider that Cole's Illmatic because I think that mixtape is that good. Every album he made hasn't even came close.

      Im not, FHD is the dopest project i've ever heard after listening to all the classics on the genius top 50 album list, and Born Sinner contains so of the best verses ive ever heard. I feel like Warm Up was what the title says. Cole world was bad, and friday nights lights just sounded bad. Sonically on nost tracks. Lyrics were bad on a lot of them.

    • @Punjabispitta
      @Punjabispitta 7 років тому +8

      Troy Cummings FNL was the pinnacle of his career. Every song on that thing was fucking perfect, and it was damn near 20 tracks. All rap. FHD was like 5 rap songs that were on that level. You don't get near as much. I've been listening to Cole since 2009 so I've personally seen the downward slope of his music quality. I'd suggest to go back and listen to his old work a few more times if you really don't think they're that good. That was back when he put out real music.

    • @Punjabispitta
      @Punjabispitta 7 років тому +5

      Troy Cummings Plus you look like one of his younger fans. It seems like Cole has 2 different groups of fans, one that's been rocking with him and one that just caught on with FHD. On every one of his albums he's tried to form a deep concept. That's really were he messes up. Leave that to guys like Ab-Soul or Lupe. Cole's conceptual themes are usually why most of his albums are so underwhelming.

  • @ETHAN-qc3oe
    @ETHAN-qc3oe 6 років тому +3

    Illmatic was a revolutionary album that challenged music as a whole, and took hip-hop down a darker road full of more jazzy, darker beats with lyrics from the darkest streets of New York, rather than more uptempo, speratic beats from the likes of Run DMC and Public Enemy, the pioneers of hip-hop. Public Enemy also came from New York and spoke on their struggles, but Nas was much more dark in his delivery, and his storytelling was much more vivid and personal. Illmatic was nothing ever seen before. It was Ever since that album, however, Nas hasn;t really dared to challenge music the same way, and has released a plethora of albums that are more or less the same. For J Cole to be Nas, he would need to release an album that is different from anything that has ever been released before. J Cole would have to essentially create an entire new genre. Its hard for artists today in the rap game to truly think of something new with so much out there right now, but nonetheless, nothing in J Cole's discography broke ground or started something new. J Cole is a talented songwriter with some good singles, but all of his albums reflected other contemporaries such as Kanye West or Kendrick Lamar, with KOD being trap based for example. While Kendrick Lamar was breaking ground with his entirely jazz orchestrated TPAB, in which he tells this story in the form of a fragmented poem, that is tied together in the finally in a way that has never been done before, and Kanye West created Yeezus, an abrassive, violent album that pushed the underground movement of industrial hip-hop by blending it with hard trap and electronic music, J Cole really had nothing new or ground breaking -something never been done before. Nonetheless, hip-hop comparisons are a curse anyways, because to expect an artist to replicate or follow the footsteps of another is to expect them to remain static, and to make the genre fade out of boredom rather than keeping it moving and progressing.

    I just had an argument wit my friend about J Cole, Mainstream rappers and underrated rappers. You know he was telling me about how J Cole is so unique about what he raps about in every one of his albums and how mainstream rappers just rap about bitches and money blah blah blah. I told him that a lot of J cole's fans act like he's the first one to rap about these topics when these topics were rapped about decades ago tracing back to the late 70's early 80's. What is Unique bout J. Cole is his own personal life because everyone's life is unique and special in their own way. Now he said J Cole is part of a select few of rappers who rap about these topics and such. I told him that is not true there are many other rappers who can certainly be on J cole's level when it comes to MC'ing and rapping deeply and lyrically. Just look at AZ featured on Illmatic and is still considered one of the most underrated rappers today. I told him many many rappers are just too underrated, too unknown when they SHOULD BE KNOWN. The truth is you just gotta look for them and get em known really. As for Mainstream rappers stop getting pissed off about their success if you're mad about their mainstream success blame the mainstream audience not the rapper they're just gonna keep doing what their doing. And that's my Breakdown

    About Nas: I'd say that making an album covering pretty much what's going on on different fronts in mainstream rap at the time IN ONE ALBUM is still pretty innovative, not just trend hopping. He didn't make a 2pac album, he didn't make a Jay-Z album, he made an album that paints a picture of the time and what goes on in rap around him. To me that shows an enormous amount of skill and versitility.
