Dave, Congratulations on the family front! I appreciate you sharing the economics of being a guide and family man. I've seen most of your videos and I appreciate all of them. I stepped away from my mountaineering to concentrate on my family and work, but I'm committed to getting back at it this year. A lot has changed in the last 30 years. Your videos have been an excellent review and introduction to new equipment. I look forward to seeing Oak. I know that it would be useful here in the United States. Some quick video suggestions: I'd like to see a demonstration of the emergency group shelter you carry. You've mentioned it several times before, but never shown it. I'd also be interested in seeing your first aid kit. Do you carry a stock kit, or have you customized it to treat the injuries you are most likely to encounter. These can be short five minute videos. I'd also like to see advanced rope techniques, such as roped slope cutting, repelling over a cornice, skiing roped up, etc

I'll add to the chorus of appreciation here. You are an excellent teacher. As an OG avalanche dog and one time aspiring guide who realized I didn't possess all the attributes that guides need long ago, I really appreciate all that you bring to this community. I would have loved to have an app like Oak a few years ago when I returned to Japan to retire. I lack for partners but I'm also dealing with autoimmune disease that is sapping my strength and my ability to be consistently ready to crush. I'm slowing down but still getting out when my body will allow. I use skills I've learned from your videos and try to keep informed about what the guiding world is doing. Your channel is an important part of that. Thank you and keep pressin' on, brother.

Hey Dave, firstly thanks for the effort you put into the channel! I have been a climber for 25years and a father for 7. Those first few years were tough! But now I am topping peaks and routes with my eldest and it’s the best feeling ever!!! Thanks to your channel I’m not teaching him 15 year old techniques. For that I am truly grateful! Thank you 🙏

Dave - Thanks for this info. I love your channel and go back to your videos frequently, particularly as I transition from mainly resort to free-ride and backcountry skiing (too late in life). I am sad to hear that you get (and worry about) negative comments. Your videos are superb - technical and detailed but also thorough and understandable - particularly when a piece of gear or a method is less familiar. Keep up the good work - just joined your channel at the max rate in the hope it helps out a little! Illegitimi non carborundum!!

I live in New Zealand and look forward to the Oak app coming to this part of the world. Sounds potentially better than some of the climbing/trekking Facebook groups I’m joined to which seem to tolerate knob end, big wall wannabe back country keyboard hero members .

Massive respect Dave - as a 52 yr old who is always stressed out at work and watch your videos in the eve to relax, good on you. Family always comes first - and watching your kids grow will go way faster than you think. I moved closer to Banff 10 years ago when my son was 8 at the time as he had a passion for the mountain - I'm glad I invested the time with him as he now climbs 5.12 trad and skis absolutely anything, by which I mean b-country. It's been an amazing period for me - and one you don't want to miss out on with your kids - be it hitting the local resort for some sweet turns or bootpacking up a steep 60 deg couloir with crampons and an ice axe (daddy hint - a 17 yr old just rips up a boot pack! But you need to harness the energy / enthusiasm / avalanche conditions). Enjoy it - guiding life is challenging. There's an old saying around here in Canadian Rockies about mountain guides that goes something like this: what's the difference between a mountain guide and a pizza ? The pizze feeds the family. Kind'a sad saying really as mountain guides are an amazing gateway to new experiences, but it's not an easy life by any means...

    Hi -
I really value your videos, it is so refreshing to have someone explaining things and coaching rather than the classic "we go - bend ze knees".
    I am a fairly good
backcountry skier and and a reasonable sport&alpine climber. For me my goal for a
day out with a guide is to further my knowledge not just go cool places and often this is hard to achieve. I think you very much differentiate here, thank you.
I have been a member of Oak for sometime and I did not realize you were connected. It is a very exciting app and I look forward to joining a tour. For me safety is the number one. It's important for me to know that the people in the group have an understanding of the terrain, yes they have the gear, but do they know how to use it? and do they know how to avoid having to use is it?
I wish you all the best with the additional role at Oak.

I can only add to all these positive comments. For me, your instructional videos are the best in the ski-touring and alpinist world; outstanding quality video without all the mistakes that others make, with clear teachings and clear diction - and just so many tips, tricks and hacks to make the most out of our modern equipment. I love what Oak is about and I think there is phenomenal development potential there, so I wish you all the best with it - I'll be following it closely! And lastly, well done and thank you for your candid, brave and honest admission about mental health challenges, (a) for recognising the issue, (b) for addressing it - and making the right choices IMHO and (c) telling us all about it. Thank you Dave, and keep at it all!!!

Great hearing you recommend taking care of mental health by reaching out to professionals. So many mountain sports athletes try to get “busy” as a way to cope.
Also excited to hear about you starting to explore business. Love the idea of cutting out the middleman in guiding to promote individual guides, as I’ve found guiding companies myself and friends work for are pretty much marketing companies.

Well done prioritizing metal health and time with family. In the mid 90s I flirted with a career in guiding but realized the lifestyle was not what I wanted in the mid to long term. The Canadian guiding industry and market has evolved considerably since the and I'm glad to see more options for guides, but it is still a hard career.

You seem to have a good work ethic and the simple fact that you’re trying to understand things and take personal responsibility is great. Get up each day and try to take it on. Some days it works. Not always to do with skills or safety but often we just didn't click. But the app could be better than fb for sure. I'd still be wary of doing anything serious with someone new.

It's great news and certainly a step in the right direction. I've been a subscriber to your UA-cam channel for a while, and your videos have painted a picture of your lifestyle. Initially, it seemed very appealing, and I aspired to live similarly. However, I've come to understand the realities of being a guide. It's an ideal fit for someone in their 20s, blending work with personal passions. But as time goes on, one might find it challenging to fulfill other life ambitions with this way of living, such as starting a family, owning a home, or securing a stable income. Your decision will undoubtedly serve you better in these respects. In essence, to lead a content life, one must make more money through enjoyable work and ensure ample free time for family and personal interests. Unfortunately, the guide lifestyle falls short in providing this. Wishing you the best with your entrepreneurial ventures and congrats on your successes! 👍

Wouldn't it be a great addition to include current conditions in the app? This way, users could filter by tours and see when they were last done by an app user, as well as read their description. It would be like a summary of tour forums, Facebook groups, and Strava. In Germany, we have a mountain report for the upcoming weekend, which would also be a great addition.
