xtwotheesee You know not everyone who does DCI is some music major or someone following a life/career in music. He could just be doing it for fun, so who cares if he has perfect technique or posture. Everyone in that ensemble is still a better player than a lot of people, including myself, and has plenty of skill. There's no need to be so critical on youtube. I mean really..I don't think Mr. blackmarketdinosaur over there cares too much.
Uniformity of Technique is box that the dci judges check and judge when they observe groups like this. Also drum corps is a very regimented / militant activity, obviously and groups like this are working to make sure EVERYTHING is the same. Also, professional musicians have the worst technique but get paid a lot of money, more than the negative dollars drum corps percussionist make, to do what they do because SOUND is more important in the "music major or someone following a life/career in music" field, not drum corps.
xtwotheesee its called west coast technique. They use different fulcrum, approach and attitude. Body shaping, body bend, back fulcrum, concert approach. etc etc.
Blackmarketdinosaur Apparently you are! I am stating my opinions in classy manner. You can disagree all you want but name calling doesn't make your point more valid, which also lacks any support.
Blackmarketdinosaur Outside mallets are flying like crazy and he his hunched over a lot of times more so with faster passages, stacking mallets, a lot of shaft from the outside mallets hanging out, uniformity of technique! finger point fulcrum wtf?! When the group chokes up half way on the mallets and the dynamic contrast is like 4 - 6 inches for the runs, it looks so weak and sounds equally as bland. I bet the sound board is giving them their musicianship rather than other groups who actually work for it and have more fun playing their dynamics authentically.
Most of the time the judges are not qualified and therefore agree with what has been said before, so that their credibility isn't question. On that note, North Texas is not best place to get your undergraduate degree, Masters yes, I don't see why people worship that institution. Percussion Judges, all judges, really don't recognize the content & performance boxes, hardest book isn't always played the best or given the credit!! Lastly, you tell me why percussion is the most inconsistent caption night to night & Why Rennick is known for writting easy books?
***** I never said they weren't good also if I am not a qualified judge than neither are you, just another person with a different opinion. Sure it does require some percussive skill to execute a book like that but in comparison to other groups out there, even those not in the top 12, it lacks meat. In my humble opinion.
2:55 "Where the hood, where the hood, where the hood at?"

azblstr OMG I wasn't the only that caught that! I actually commented this on the marimba cam a week ago and I thought I was the only one.

Technique too, the show is really simple, boring and extremely overrated. So many better groups out there, not my cup of tea...
Are you stupid?
