I have a neighbor who is a pool/spa contractor, and I've received two defunct pool heaters from him very similar to what you tore down in this video. Sadly, I'm not yet ready to smelt, so I simply turned the innards in for scrap, for lack of storage space. The brass and copper that come out of those heaters is incredible! Plus, one of the old heaters contained kaowool (too decrepit to salvage) and the other had solid slabs of refractory brick (that I saved for my eventual smelting).
I dare you to go to your local junkyard, buy a car for as cheap as possible *- And melt it all !!* (Except the tires, of course) LOL! I'm serious! Consider it a challenge. Anyone else want to see that?? It would be quite interesting and informative!

Aluminum would be a large amount, since modern cars use a lot of it in the body, engine, wheels, and other assorted parts. The subframe and suspension would be mostly steel, including the transmission because the gearbox uses hardened steel gears and components to withstand the wear and tear of daily driving and the force applied by the engine. There is some glass and a lot of plastic parts from the interior and trim. It also depends on the model year of the car. Much older, pre-1980 cars consisted of more steel because the bodies were generally not aluminum like today's cars that use more aluminum for the purpose of saving weight and gas mileage.
As someone who is a technician in the pool business, I always wanted to see all the copper from those heaters melted down in to a single bar. Awesome video!!
I started scrapping like this years ago in my free time. It got to the point where my favorite part was just taking apart machines to see what they are made of. Almost therapeutic. You learn a lot and you can turn a pile of crap destined for the landfill into cash (or bars). It's amazing what people just toss in a dumpster.
Love what you do stackD, I have a suggestion for a video. Take a old crucible that you are ready to retire and fill it with molten copper right to the rim, then let it freeze in the crucible. Once hard break the crucible to unveil a solid copper crucible that you can then polish and engrave with your logo. Would look pretty sick in your new treasure room. Keep doing what your doing man also give Bullion and Ingot a pet from us.
Here's some wisdom I picked up over helping my grandfather clean a barn full of car parts. If you have no intentions keeping lock screws take a flat head and snap the lock out after words you can use the same flat head or a star bit and unscrew it like a normal screw.

@@llloyd4 Tamper Proof Torx are easy defeated with a punch. Simply punch the center flat and use a regular Torx bit. I have several sets of torx bits. Some tamper proof, some not. It seems to be all the rage on automobiles around here.

Nice silver contacts in that jar. It will take a bit of chemistry to extract pure but even impure the silver content would make a cool ingot. I have seen people remove the contacts from the plates with just a bit of torch heat on breaker contacts. Maybe that is a good place to start. About the heater, so much copper! I never would have guessed. Great vid!
I was looking for a comment just like this :) extracting silver and gold can be done from contacts and (in some cases) circuit boards, but it does require a little bit of specialist knowledge
@@deminumenera1758 yeah, (imo) either bust out the chemistry set, colab with Sreetips or just make a contact coin. junk silver coin currency is typically 90% anyway so a contact coin would be pretty cool.

The resulting silver cement can be melted to (impure) ingots or to shot for an electrolytic silver cell (see Sreetips). After the silver has been extracted, the dissolved copper can be cemented out on iron/steel.

Man, watching this, I think back to 8 or 9 years ago, when I used to scrap 60-100 hot water tanks every two weeks for an HVAC company. I recovered the non-ferrous metals for the extra value, and generally had two five-gallon buckets of brass T's, elbows, and pressure-relief valves - 50-70 pounds - along with 40-60 pounds of copper pipe. Every two weeks. And then there were the A/C cores. If I'd been watching this channel then, I don't think I'd've been able to resist the temptation to become a melter!

I’ve been casting lead bullets for several years and your advice about checking your equipment and preheating your tools is spot on. I’ve had a couple “silver showers” over the years and I know lead droplets are HOT AND UNMERCIFUL when they get on you!

Hey bigstackD ! Nice video 👍 Happy New year ! Big fan 😎 I am so looking forward to get a place to melt stuff. I'm currently into e-waste refining. Waiting on summer to start processing over 400g of those silver contact ( clean ones / no extra metal ) Some of them are full silver alloy 80% silver and some are silver plated copper. I get them from remote car starter relays where I work. All those little black box you kept all this time will contain either silver or gold contact. The way I process them is by making a solution of 3:1 ratio of muriatic acid ( HCL 31% ) and hydrogen peroxide and let them in the solution for a couples of weeks. This will not dissolve the silver alloy but it will remove the base metal. You can then smelt it and get a bar of 80% silver. I really suggest you clean them contacts first by removing the copper / brass or nickel part that hold them in place either with a pair of cutter or melt the industrial glue with a blowtorch to remove excess metal prior to acid process. This will considerably reduce the amount of acid needed. Also, when the acid bath is done you can stick a piece of iron in it and it will precipitate the copper back 🤤 Hope it helps !!! 😎👍 If you need additional information just ask and there's also some big guys on yt that do this all day long ! They know alot on the subject.

Those weird screws are tamper proof screws. Or I’ve heard them called security screws. I have a few sets of bits for them. In a pinch I have knocked the center piece out and used a regular torx bit.
Being an electronics hobbyist for decades, it's always said to see potential space parts discarded so easily. Sure, they would have ended up in a landfill otherwise, but it's still sad to see. That LCD display alone would have been fun to turn into something. Nevertheless, I am not complaining. This process is still fun to watch. I'm sure you knew this, but a lot of old electronics (1970s and earlier) contain a lot of gold, especially the chips (gold pins). I'd collect the chips due to their rarity though. I guess you would have to have a lot of them to get a decent amount of gold out of them.
Each time i watch the end of your videos and you show the treasure room with that cartoon filter, i always think " you should have a dragon guarding the treasure " -- Happy New Year for you and your family (including the pooches ).

i'm really curious with what you gonna do with all that metal once you reach 1 ton. you sell it? you make money with it? is it really worth it? i`m gessing at this point you're making more money showing all the process on youtube but i believe many of us that watches your videos might be curious if they can do something like this and make some moneys, cheers bruh

Wow, that was one hell of a tear down. Brought me back to the days of working on rooftop hvac systems on commercial buildings. I still not sure what a spa pump is thought, even after seeing all the parts. Those odd-ball driver heads/screws remind me of the ones we'd see on specialized controllers. The crib were we went to get all our tools had the proper drivers for it and refused to sell them to me. I guessed it might be a legal thing around here. Found out later they were probably similar to certain tools only a certified locksmith can get, except this one being sold only to instrumentation techs. Now I know why my boss just had whole spare units of those kicking around. He'd just replace the entire thing rather than call the instrument tech for 2x the money.
I love how well you care and love for your pugs. I had a pug once and best decision I ever had on getting one. They are quite awesome and lovable dogs and very loyal.

Ballpark guess; how much of each smeltable metal would you think one could get from an average junkyard car?
About 200lbs of aluminum 35lbs of copper 25lbd of lead the rest would be steel iron and plastic

This will not dissolve the silver alloy but it will remove the base metal. You can then smelt it and get a bar of 80% silver. I really suggest you clean them contacts first by removing the copper / brass or nickel part that hold them in place either with a pair of cutter or melt the industrial glue with a blowtorch to remove excess metal prior to acid process. This will considerably reduce the amount of acid needed. Also, when the acid bath is done you can stick a piece of iron in it and it will precipitate the copper back 🤤 Hope it helps !!! 😎👍 If you need additional information just ask and there's also some big guys on yt that do this all day long ! They know alot on the subject.

Those weird screws are tamper proof screws. Or I’ve heard them called security screws. I have a few sets of bits for them. In a pinch I have knocked the center piece out and used a regular torx bit.
Those are NOT stardard security torx bits :) you can see that those screws are like 5 point star, torx screws are 6 point.

Being an electronics hobbyist for decades, it's always said to see potential space parts discarded so easily. Sure, they would have ended up in a landfill otherwise, but it's still sad to see. That LCD display alone would have been fun to turn into something. Nevertheless, I am not complaining. This process is still fun to watch.
I'm sure you knew this, but a lot of old electronics (1970s and earlier) contain a lot of gold, especially the chips (gold pins). I'd collect the chips due to their rarity though. I guess you would have to have a lot of them to get a decent amount of gold out of them.
Each time i watch the end of your videos and you show the treasure room with that cartoon filter, i always think " you should have a dragon guarding the treasure " -- Happy New Year for you and your family (including the pooches ).

Two furnaces three camera angles, red letter day for birds, two times with the dogs, proper safety of the hoses, and your friend is no longer in the corner in time out! (Lol) that was a great secondary flip of brush and landed it. I have a bit that will take care of the pesky star bit. But love the new tool to deal with them. Wow, that was one hell of a tear down. Brought me back to the days of working on rooftop hvac systems on commercial buildings. I still not sure what a spa pump is thought, even after seeing all the parts.
Those odd-ball driver heads/screws remind me of the ones we'd see on specialized controllers. The crib were we went to get all our tools had the proper drivers for it and refused to sell them to me. I guessed it might be a legal thing around here. Found out later they were probably similar to certain tools only a certified locksmith can get, except this one being sold only to instrumentation techs. Now I know why my boss just had whole spare units of those kicking around. He'd just replace the entire thing rather than call the instrument tech for 2x the money.
