I have a Colt officers .45 acp bought in 1985, great gun. A problem showed up , tab on spring plug broke off. Had a gunsmith put a Kings bushing and reverse spring plug in! 💯 % reliable! 🦅🇺🇸
I remember that gun. That was the first handgun I ever purchased and it had the little tab on the bottom of the recoil spring plug. Great gun. I wish I had never gotten rid of it. 🥲
A small amount of polishing of the sear will take that from a gritty trigger to one that breaks like glass, lighten up the springs and it will be a whole different experience. The Series 80 is what it is, it's gonna have that extra travel. A really good gunsmith might be able to do some magic. But from Colt, they are gonna do it the normal way. With that extra travel.
I have a Colt Commander purchased in 2014. Took it to Terry Tusseys Gunsmithing for a trigger job, new sights, and touch up the throat and ramp, and reliability tune. I replaced the spur grip safety with a Wilson "drop in" grip safety with a nice beavertail. I kept the thumb safety but used a Dremel tool with a grinding stone to smooth out and round the sharp corners and serrations. One of my favorite carry pistols. I also have the Les Baer Concept VII commander size. So nice balanced and fits just eight in my small hands. A good gunsmith can tune the trigger with the Series 80s trigger. I had a Colt Officers (series 80) with a superb trigger tuned by a local smith, not one of the big name smiths.
I’ve got one. I replaced the plastic mainspring with a Wilson combat all steel checkered one….replaced the duel recoil spring again with a Wilson Combat and put some talon grips on the front strap. In the future I’m going to put some night sights on it, other than that, it shoots great, looks great. Trigger is not too bad. It’s 100% with Wilson Combat and Chip McCormick 8 round mags. With 10 rounders it doesn’t want to load the last round. It’s a little heavy for EDC. I have a Springfield Ronin 4.25 in 45 ACP for EDC. All in all, great gun, fun to shoot.
I got one new but factory blemished when I received it from ffl it had a idiot scratch from factory and little small scratches all around the gun but it’s been 100 percent reliable over 2000 rounds using Wilson and the ruger sr1911 mags
Have owned one now for bout 4 years I don't remember any jams, trigger is getting little better but it's still a very tight slide and mag release. Overall I love this Commander 45. I'm I'd say a average shot but definitely getting feel for him after say 600 maybe 700 rounds.
Glad one finally worked out for you. Don't know why, but grips with huge company logos make me cringe. Replaced the stock ones on a SA Mil Spec with Herretts fully checkered. Thinner, more gripping surface, and additional plunger tube support as well.
The inconsistency of the series 80 triggers is a bummer. I was hopeful after your DE review but, it looks like you need to check these out at the shop before laying down your $1k. The Competition with the series 70 is looking better and better but I keep blowing my budget on Colt revolvers…. Thank you for sharing your knowledge about the 1911, which I consider a piece of mechanical artwork.
How dare you shoot a half inch group with the same type of European trigger safety that Kimber and Sig uses and a gritty trigger pull on your new colt commander with the budget back strap and the single magazine and like it! Nice pistol, nice grouping. I’m jealous
Hey Matt great video! Something about the Commander/Combat Commanders that is just pleasing to the eye. You wouldn't think just being 3/4 of an inch shorter would make a difference as far as eye appeal goes (well for my tastes anyway) and feel/balance goes (again just speaking for myself) but works for me. Still have the blued Combat Commander bought from one of the guys that used to come to The Range. You bought the Government model that was his too. Remember that? Anyway totally enjoying your videos Matt! Keep up the no BS tell it like it is format.
Thanks Mike. I remember that guy he was bald and weird, right? Can’t remember his name. Yeah I should have kept that Colt. I love the Commander size too.
Yes exactly! He would stand at the counter and clean his gun before shooting and then right after shooting. Never had much to say and yeah, a little different but okay.
The magazine with this gun and the defender comes to the follower that compresses in his patented, and it allows for one more round even though it is shorter than the 1911 magazine.
Now ya got me . SE or a Combat ,. Guess I got get a job just for more Colts. I too am a fanboy.Am Only one in the county , maybe state, that carries Colt.
The lawyer parts in S80 guns makes me sad. That’s a great looking Blaster, look at whole lot cooler with a holster worn finish! 👌🏻 nice vid, I wish you’d crack them open on camera show us behind the curtain.😊
I can start doing that. It might be awhile because I have alot of content already filmed but I can start doing that. Or maybe a separate breakdown video? I might just do that.
Got one for my birthday last year. Superb shooter! However after 400 rounds i could not remove the barrel bushing. Tried the wrench too. No joy. Took to local gun store. Again no joy. Told me to shoot more rounds thru it. WTF? Paid $1100 for it! I will not EDC unless it is 100 per cent and that includes dissembly. This year i got a colt Defender for my 66th birthday. Again great shooter. Colt engineers put in a crappy recoil spring and guide rod assembly. Bought the kimber unit as a replacement. Struggled for the better part of an hour to reassemble! Planning to get the commander in 38 super next . Hopefully since CZ bought colt they wil improve quality controk. Hope they bring back the Mustangs and GovT 380s as well but with novak sights and not the little crappy sights.
Came up with a super simple and relative cheap way to cure thumb safety over travel. If interested would like to explain it. Only for blue/ black models . But if black dot on stainless thumb then can work too.
If it matters , my lightweight has front serations . 3 to be precise . I bought mine from PSA back in 2016. So either they stopped making with them, or the Combats don’t need them. Just an FYI ,other than that it’s the same as your Combats.
Aquired my Colt Combat Commander like the one in this review. 400 rounds thru it. Super accurate and a joy to shoot. When i tried to disassemble it for cleaning i could not remove the barrel bushing! Took it to my LGS. They tried but could not remove it either. Told me to shoot several hundred rounds more thru it . Really? $ 1,000 for it and cannot get the barrel bushing out? Colt... Welcome to NO GO CITY! I am not going to carry it with this issue. Anyone have any thoughts, ideas, advice? Thanks. Btw i tried using a barrel bushing wrench... No joy.
Lol working on it bought a pile of Ed Brown 7 rounds, hope the quality matches the hype. Was disappointed in the McCormick 10 rounders took too much force to sest them in my Colts.
So Bud shipped it to your favorite FFL gun store in your area? How the owner of the gun store feels? I know it a dumb question.. it just frustrating that my favorite gun store don't sell what I want..and I never bought a gun online before.. thanks for sharing your videos

If a gun store isn't carrying what you want then they shouldn't have any feelings about you getting the gun online. They still get paid to operate as the FFL.

I shrink the rails down to below 1000th clearance slide to frame fit ( no I don’t use a hammer) and the disconnect ramp on the stripping block well I have a lot of other things , last High polish the sides of the slide and frame , lightning cuts , DLC coated.
