Almost 900 views in 15 min. Should prove you and your channel are loved. We may not always agree, but that doesn't stop us from loving the things we do. Great video... I knew of this castle from pictures but could never place a name, now I can.
What's the height of these towers?
Wales is part of Britain. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Take out Northern Ireland you have Great Britain comprised of the Kingdom of England, the Kingdom of Scotland and the principality of Wales.
@@DavidHardrada-jt1tr So, Aquaman is a prince, not a king then.
@curtisbright4012 Sorry, not following you. In the video he said Wales and Britain. Hence my reply
My daughter wanted a bouncy castle for her birthday. The guy said the rental was $50, and the set-up fee was $1000 dollars. I said, “That’s outrageous!”
He just shrugged and said, “That’s inflation for you.”
I just blew up on that hot air! Talk about puffed-up?! Keep that up and you'll get stoned.

I think this whole thread has just gone flat...

Well, if one castle isn't enough might as well re-inforce it with another castle. Then another castle...and another castle...and another castle.
Though still not as large as Versailles or the Kremlin.
@@morrigankasa570 Those are palaces, not castles. They have more in common with the Hofburg in Vienna than with Caernarvon.
@@harbl99 True enough, but still worth mentioning those amazing places.
@@morrigankasa570 You could add Constantinople to the list. Considering the Theodosian layered walls, it was just a fort upon a fort upon a fort.
@@rainmaker9300 Excellent point as well. Yet another amazing place worth mentioning.
Got to remember that Caernarfon was, probably more than the rest of the Ring of Iron, a political statement.
The stripes in the stonework are a direct copy of the ones in the Theodosian Walls of Constantinople; they weren't just decoration, they were a claim to imperial might.
Very inaccurate Imperial might, but Edward I was very much setting a trend for English royalty to follow with his suppression of the Welsh and their border raiding.
That and a "small" nod to his wife's origins, the smaller towers rising from the seven big towers are actually based on the Castilian Coat of Arms.
Wasn't Thomas the Savoyard the architect for the Welsh castles? Sayoy is now in southern France near the Italian border and where Italian royal family came from.
@@kaloarepo288”Master James of Saint George (c. 1230-1309) was a master of works/architect from Savoy, described by historian Marc Morris as "one of the greatest architects of the European Middle Ages". He was largely responsible for designing King Edward I's castles in North Wales, including Conwy, Harlech and Caernarfon (all begun in 1283) and Beaumaris on Anglesey (begun 1295).”
It's insane to me, I've been watching this channel for years and as a Brit who loves history i've been to so many of these welsh castles so many times - it's so cool to see someone who's taught me so much about castles finally visiting one of the ones i've been to most often and analysing walls i've stood on in so much detail.
For anyone interested or visiting Caernarfon, just near the castle is an absolutely wonderful wetherspoon pub I highly recommend!
You can park your car there for free overnight as well, also my dad met the founder of wetherspoon in that spoons
'Inane' changes the meaning a bit 😂

What's the catch?.....
"I also sell cannons"
Caernarfon castle is truly a very special place. I live in North Wales and have been there many times and its a true marvel of its time. It's actually quite easy to explain why its so huge, Gwynedd the county historically was its own nation with its own rulers, powerful families, culture and so on. During the English conquests of Wales or attempted conquests Gwynedd was notorious for rebellions and uprisings. In fact English and even Norman Lords had huge issues trying to rule and control it, and Gwynedd was often viewed prior to Edward I's reign as being the last bastion of Welsh Independance. It took a massive fortress like Carenarfon to finally subjugate the people there after basically a quarter of a millenia of struggle to finally get it under control.
If you want to see a castle that shows the different designs over a couple hundred years you should look at Aberdour Castle in Scotland, its a small one and more of a residence than defencive building, but over the years and the add ons/rebuilds because of fires and damage it shows off several centuries of design and concepts
Aberdour is indeed really pretty, and very… well, Scottish Lowlands in design, an excellent example!
No one wants to see your silly Scottish castles.
These castle videos are 100% my new favorite content from your channel! I've been watching for about 7-8 years and these are truly a dream come true to see these castles from your perspective
My friend had a farm overlooking conwy castle, (giant 8 grand tower castle) last farm of the mountain, frequently above the weather. I've had the pleasure of a grand view of the castle on many ocassions. He also had a house inside the walls of conwy and i've stayed there too. It has a nice icecream shop. Nothing like staying and living for a while in a real functional castle town where you drive in through the gatehouse.
When you’re thinking about how you’d design a castle for your story, these videos at Shadiversity are gems, or Machicolations comparatively. Thank you for sharing/making the videos !
It's pretty much the castle analogue of Voltron.
I liked the emphasis on "very distinct reasons why" concerning the claims on the size of the castle, sometimes I'm not a fan of people who make claims like "this is one of the biggest castles" because that's rather meaningless to me when people are so prone to hyperbole, but additional comments like that help me retain information 🙇
That is crazy huge
so happy to see more of this video series! All of the channel content is great, but honestly the castles videos are especially awesome
This kind of content is great! You were the one to introduce me to all the fun and intricacy of castles, I love seeing them in video like this.
This is amazing. Your castle content is the best. More castles, please!
a most impressive castle, with a lovely view of it at 3:21.
Went to Caernarfon as part of a holiday in Wales years ago, keep meaning to go back as the castle was a big highlight, but then there are just so many castles here in the UK. There's something like 80+ just in Scotland in good enough condition to look around (though many are just ruins you go look at, no specific visitor facilities or such), so it's hard to go back to one when I still haven't been to all the others yet!
Thanks, Shad. Always helpful for anyone writing in settings with castles. Much appreciated.
Well it's one of those Edward I. flexing castles English built while conquering Wales - they're all oversized... anyway I have to say of those Harlech is my most favourite one :)
I am LOVING these in person examinations of these castles. Thank you so much, idk if I'll ever be able to visit places like this, and this is amazing to see.
Caernarfon is really impressive. Wondering if Conwy might be next.
1:51 Pembroke castle is also one of the first in Europe to have round keep too. As opposed to the earlier, square towers.
Great job Shad!!!!!! Love your castle tours and info
Just imagine the planning, engineering, and man power needed to build something like this. If a normal castle took a few years to complete this had to take a decade or two right? I think this is what most fantasy castles are based on. Very few in movies and shows are accurately depicted. though it also seems that people always forget about the vast fields of farmlands and the city outside the walls.
Like most of the great ones, it was modified and added on to over time, but Edward I supposedly managed the main construction in only 4 years, 1283-1287.
Another Beautiful Castle, thank you for showing us another castle Shad.
You should come to Prague once. It's a wonderfull city, the old town mainly. And of course be aware of tourist traps. But, that is not the point. There are two castles the Prague castle, one of the biggest castles in the world and the Vyšehrad. Both are beatiful, especially the cathedrales. And that's not everything. I remember you once spoken of Karlštejn, which is close to Prague, like 20 minutes by train. And if you remember Kingdom come: Deliverance Rattay and Sasau are aslo really close even Kutenberg. And of course you have fans in Czech republic, so you will be always welcome.
This is why I subscribed. Such interesting and informative stuff.
What is probably the most interesting thing about both Caernarfon and Beaumaris is that they were never actually finished. Edward I stopped the construction on his ring of castles because he needed the money for the war in Scotland. The King's and Queen's Gates were never completed. If you look at the walls inside Caernarfon you can see "teething", which are stones that are sticking out that would have been a part of additional walls or buildings that were never started. As planned, there was supposed to be a wall that would have separated the castle into two wards. Even the kitchens were never completed, teething as a testament to what could have been had Edward not practically bankrupting England building these castles. It is amazing that from the outside the King's Tower looks complete, but from the inside you see that two stories are missing.
I'd really be interested to see Shad check out Snodhill castle.
They've done some work there recently, uncovering some amazing things. Apparently we Welsh (I think during the Glyndŵr rebellion) were so much of a threat to the English there that the castle was built to an insane standard, with incredible features found nowhere else.
Caernarfon Castle is my favorite castle! I love that you got to it!
To me this is like talking about the difference between a mansion and a cottage. The mansion probably has room enough for several cottages, but it is still one unit. Or when two villages grow so much that they merge and become districts in the same town.
Hey shad i kinda went down a rabbit hole of yoh and it turns out there alot of pepole makeing negative videos about you
You are one of my fav UA-cam ers
And i respect how you dont give most of these hate filled pepole attention
I respect you bro keep it pushing
In awe at the size of this absolute unit
You need to go to Jersey and check out the castles there. Elizabeth castle is out to see but you can walk there when the tide is low as there is a raised path to get there. There is also Mont Orgueil Castle which is just pretty big and well defended on the side of a hill. You can also check a bunch of the German forts there from WW2.
Need MOAR castle content.
*Really* love these videos, Shad. Just makes me want to visit England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland one day.
Having first watched Shadiversity when he did the long video nerding out over various medeval castles It's quite heartwarming to see him live his dream of actually visiting Real standing castles.
These castle videos have been amazing. And that chess board was wild to see at all .
Im so glad you got enough material from the England trip so that you can continue this amazing castle series.

Just think of Caernarfon Castle as Thee highest priority renovation project for a Zombie Apocalypse. Then just stand on the roof and shout "Let them come!" Oh and Shad good look finding or building one that is bigger.
The irony is that it would be *so much easier and cheaper* to build one bigger and better now!
But there is no need for them, so those with access to the funds won't build them.
With how much you love castles and how much you love sword fighting, I'm surprised you haven't done any videos about older movies. Basil Rathbone's filmography alone has you covered; the man was a fencing champion AND an accomplished actor.
This is the old style content I miss! More of this please! Needing out over history instead of testing fantasy.
There is a walled town that is effectively part of the castle, but everybody forgets about it because the main castle is so impressive.
As someone who's parents both come from Anglesey and have gone there every year as a kid to visit grandparents, this has always been one of my top three favourite castles, it's just so stylish as well as imposing.
This is the kind of video I want more of.
Is there an extended version?
learning something new about old things like swords and castles is always fun to me. maybe i make the trip to great britain once myself. odder things happend;)
4:01 looks like they've done some Renovations since I was there almost 25 years ago. Beautiful castle, possibly the most impressive place I visited while in the UK.
As a welshman, I feel imense pride knowing that this level of construction was necessary to keep us in check.
Shad is finally in the castle I've visited. Yeah this one.... this one was sooo different from the castles in my home country (Czech republic). Seems like we had same impression Shad :)
I've been there a couple of times. Really cool castle. Definitely one of my favorites.
Hopefully it won't sink into a swamp, it'd be alot to build another on it.
"shadiversity" sounds like a mid to late 90,s video game voice.
I enjoy your channel. I hope you are doing well with it. I might order a book even though its not my primary genre.
Have a good one Shad.
You should of said you were in town I'm only down the road.
I hope you have more videos on caernarfon coming out as there is so many unique talking points on the castles design and technology.
You could do an entire video on the kings gate
Did you explore the smaller castles you mentioned? I'd *love* to see tour videos for them as well.
Caernarvon castle is my zombie apocalypse plan. Only a few hours drive away, fresh water on tap, and right on top of a river for easy travel. I'll even bring my own longbow.
Caernarfon*
‘V’ doesnt exist in the Welsh alphabet
@@lethallizard963 Good thing I'm not speaking Welsh then.
Caernarvon*
@@Matt_Alaric you’re not speaking, you’re typing, and you’re typing a Welsh word. It’s not spelt caernarvon, because it’s a Welsh place name.
@@lethallizard963 I'm not speaking or typing Welsh, I'm typing English. And in English we do have the letter V, as is demonstrated in words like - Caernarvon.
Feel free to go and complain to whoever you think will give you the power to control how other people spell words.
@@Matt_Alaric But Caernarfon is not an English word. Did you notice how it’s spelled in the video title?
I’m not trying to control how you spell words, you can spell it wrong if you’d like, I’m just informing you that you are wrong.
when it comes to medieval castles in fiction, I was always a fan of Minas Tirith and now a days Gondolin. I love the whole white stone structure in which they look like giant birthday cakes, and especially with Gondolin I really love the idea of a castle being in the middle of a valley surrounded by mountains and snow & grass and waterfalls. and each layer of the city has pillars and structures that has the bright green grass surrounding it. the visuals I've seen of Gondolin is absolutely gorgeous, which is why it's my most favorite castle ever put to fiction in terms of design.
I can’t wait for more castle videos! Your castle videos are the comfort food of UA-cam
I cant get over how big it is. I know the video doesnt do the justic rather then being there in person. But I cant get over how much work it would go into it. I wonder if it had been maded in like stages
Someone should make a zombie movie in there.
That's an beautiful castle, and really huge
Probably the castle that inspired Harrenhal in ASOIAF
"The Princess is in another castle"
Wales is such a beautiful country.
The castle looks colossal!
Scholar Shad gives us another gem of a video.
whilst your here shad , try Castleton tiny castle but imagine trying to walk up the hill to single accessible side under a hail of fire
Now we just need you to make a video where you go around the walls of the old Dubrovnik city. Because, as a castle, THAT thing is HUGE! (Though I suppose it's actually more so a walled city really... Eh, it's huge and it is extremely well preserved. Definately worth checking out.)
That castle is just gorgeous.
You see, Frieza, you're not dealing with the average castle anymore...
More castle videos! Yeeeeaaaahhhh!!!!🙌🙌🙌💚💚💚
imagine successfully beseiging a castle, capturing it, then you have to decide what to do about the other 7 currently fucking you up from all directions at once.
I assume the peninsula around it would've been just water when it was built? Hence no need for machicolations?
I really looks gigantic from that angle. It just looks kind of odd with the queens gate going nowhere, high up in the air.
+1 Because i really like when shad almost foams from his mouth in extasy when reviewing english castles.
I'm pretty sure he will acutally bust a nut given a chance to see east france, south germany or northern poland castles. :D
That cliffhanger...
I can confirm in every tower high up sits Sacred Emily and every night when the bell hits 12 she sings: Castle is a castle is a castle is a castle.
nice work
For each tower to be a castle would require each tower to be both a residence of nobility and a place of protection. Since Caernarfon castle was the home King Edward I, and numerous English and Welsh nobles since, due to its massive size a more apt description for Caernarfon castle would be a Palace Fortress.
I really hope Shad covers Vianden Castle in Luxembourg. A really good looking castle
Hey check out the Lewes castle it's very small but it's got a lot of history behind it and then there's a Anne Boleyn house not to far away from it. I know cus I love this town. Hope you enjoy your time here in the UK. Take care mate.
Hey Shad. I was wondering if you could make a video that kind of covers a whole bunch of these smaller castles you mention. 'Cause you've said in so many of your videos (this one too) that the majority of castles were quite small, but it's hard for me to find which ones they are/were. If you could make that video I would be very appreciative of it. Thanks! P.S. I really like your videos and have been subscribed for years.
@5:30 wow. But I do wonder: how does the castle handle rainwater drainage if that's not got a roof over it?
I used to go to Caernarfon every year, relay nice town.
Yo dawg, we heard ya like castles. So we put a castle on your castle

I’ve been to that castle and it’s a work of art and strategic genius.

I concur, your country does have some lovely castles. I've been to Bouzov, Sternberk, and (of course) Prague Castle. It was nice to see that they were all in such great condition as well.
@@joelkurowski7129 Even tho our republic is not in a very good shape right now, we care about our history very much. :)
Caernarfon is the embodiment of Bigger is Better. It's glorious while also not teetering on the edge of Absurd like Malbork which is hilariously big.
When your seventh highest ranking guard captain lives in a tower bigger then your rival king's castle.
Have you tried playing Enshrouded yet? that game lets you build your own castle from the ground up. actually from under the ground up! There's actually a fortified town that I'm currently in the process of rebuilding.
Caernarfon is especially impressive at night, if you're in the hills above the old medieval town you can look down and see the castle lit up and it's absolutely breathtaking.
Whoever built this thing was clearly winning and just decided to promote a bunch of pawns for the hell of it.
More castle tour videos please!
Not sure I’ve ever been in but I’ve done the crabbing there a few times.
I reckon Shad probably visited enough castles, and shot enough footage to upload on this channel for years. Also nice to have met you at the London meetup, Shad. I was the Dutch guy with the dreads.
You want beautiful castles I would highly suggest at Italy as well, mainly the Aragonese Castle and the Castel del Monte. Beautiful castles.
