  • On the evening of 8/3/2024, a very strong thunderstorm and possible weak tornado passed through the area. The storm came very suddenly and brought very heavy rainfall and strong winds. The wind caused many trees to fall in the surrounding areas, blocking roadways and damaging power lines. The power failed at my residence, though the data lines remained connected.
    This was the strongest storm we've had pass through the area since I've been living in this house. This was definitely not just a regular severe thunderstorm.
    The storm was recorded on 4 different cameras and includes audio from the NOAA weather radio which received multiple EAS alerts before the storm.

      Well since I live in Ohio. We’re experiencing an outage on the national weather service in Cleveland Ohio. And I think that the tornado caused the outage. And I have an alert works EAR-10, Midland WR-120, and a running snail MD-319.

      @@JordanUyou're not kidding. The new bill waiting to be signed will be devastating for weather reports and apps. Nobody will pay a subscription for forecasts or radar use. The little funding NWS gets is laughable really. Radar holes in tornado Alley, have local meteorologists calling their own shots. But at least they've been phasing out the 70s equipment.

    Jordan, hopefully someday if your budget allows you can get a whole house generator installed that way it's easier on you during power failures. My old house in Michigan had a whole house generator that came with the place. Oh it worked good during the 2003 blackout. Here in Florida i also have a whole house generator. 63hz won't really hurt anything it's still within that +/- 5 percent tolerance. Heck my line voltage sometimes goes near 123 and drops down to like 110 or so depending on load on the grid etc. Also i noticed you got the Midland WR120 weather radio i had one myself until a lightning strike took it out. I've upgraded to the WR400 which I like 100 times more. All my weather radios now are WR400s by midland. I like having the NOAA band along with AM/FM and they make a great alarm clock/clock radio.

      The lights don't go out often enough around here to justify the cost. It's rare we get this type of weather. The WR120 is very basic but it's inexpensive and reliable -- that's all I need.

      @@JordanU oh i hear you and please get rid of that suicide cord for the generator. you really should put a interlock kit on the breaker panel with a proper generator hook up outside. I also notice your breaker panel is getting a bit full. Time to add a sub panel for more circuits. I would hate for something to happen to you dude. We used to run our generator the same way, and did that for a good few decades up in northern new england. I am glad that you and the fans and air conditioners and other vintage stuff have survived. I am glad I do not live in the extreme weather areas. Specifically, I live in California, so we don't have tornadoes and there aren't many thunderstorms here, but we do occasionally get a lot of wind. I don't like the fact that you are using the same type of plug on each end (male-to-male) to connect the generator to the house. Many people do that, and it really is not safe. I do like that you are taking precautions to prevent hazards though.

    That was interesting. I rarely see actual severe weather ( except for lightning, that is really severe at times, a building was struck by lightning about a mile away from me years ago ) where I live for some reason, I have lived in the same county in Wisconsin all my life, so the 'storms' have almost always lacked severeness. Oddly enough a bit outside the city limits that is where the severe storms happen.
    I switched out my carburetor on my generator and put on a 30 some thing dollar dual fuel carburetor to run on natural gas so I wouldn't need to have extra gas on hand and avoid needing a gas station.

    • @JordanU
      @JordanU  Місяць тому +2

      There's very little severe weather around here besides thunderstorms. This was a once in a decade type of event.
      I've thought about converting my generator to propane if possible. I have a large tank under the deck which would probably power it for quite some time.

    That wasn’t as bad as us we actually had a derencho storm that cause a tornado touchdown in downtown Houston with 100 mph winds what made the storm terrifying was the heavy rain and the sky going dark never lost power but only for a few minutes and then months after we ended up getting hit with a category 1 hurricane causing major damage And then we ended up losing power for 3 days.but honestly these seem crazy,lucky you have one of these radios I hope to get one of these one day for the next weather event.

    Why don’t you have reg air, I saw at least 5 window air units which run your bill crazy just like using in the winter those plug in heaters. I had propane and switched and had a guy come out and I switched from propane to reg electric and went with a Lenox. They converted everything. It was 15,000 but I used their plan that was fixed at 8%. I own a dual huge home, that me and my sis custom built. So I control my heat/air and she has hers I have a huge kitchen, laundry etc….and this summer being a heat wave in 90’s for 3 months I watered daily on my lawns. My bill was only $ 200. That’s water, sewer, elec taxes, on a huge home. In fact our bill dropped compared to the propane.
