That is absolutely right. I remember in the early 1980's "baby" carrots being a "thing" at the store. The carrot association made a ton of money after an engineer figured out how to market carrots by machining regular carrots into uniform little carrots and coining a new name, "baby" carrots. The industry sold them like the proverbial "hot cakes"; they flew off the shelves. You are right to say they are 2nd grade carrots and are missing the skins, something I never remove at home, only wash before using. Thanks for that video.
Oh for Pete sakes! 62 years old and I never knew that... that's crazy. Yep, I'm growing my own next spring, can't wait! Thanks for the great video Jeff! I learn something new every time it seems. 👍
You too eh?! Lol! I'm the same age, and didn't know that either. I always knew there was something funky with them, but was afraid to ask 😅. We grow our own now, and you will be thrilled and amazed by them when you do too! Good luck, and enjoy! 😊
I love stores that sell ugly vegetables! Also, I think the same thing applies to those pre-cooked, peeled beets that you can buy - Love Beets?? ~ Sandra
My hubby didn't believe me when I told him about this years ago....then he tasted some fresh from our garden. I daren't repeat some of his expletives but he was very ticked at being deceived. Great information as always!
Thank you! I’ve been trying so hard to convince my friends just what “baby carrots” are and how they are treated with chlorine.. Now I can show them this video.
Great video Jeff. I knew something was up with those baby carrots but I'm glad to be educated on why they just didn't seem right. I'll never buy them again.
I already knew this about baby carrots. They do taste odd; not really like carrots. If I want baby carrots, I can shape them myself. These days, I am finding organic, oddly shaped carrots being sold as juicing carrots. Some of them are too dry to get much juice out of them.
Wow 😮 I bought a bag of them earlier this week! 🤢 Will start growing my own in the spring! Getting cold here in New York now! 🥶 Already started the garlic & shallots for late spring/ early summer harvest ! Thanks Jeff for this information, from a new amateur gardener! Love you channel & content! Very interesting & informative! 😊❤️
Oh the horror 😳 I never knew the truth behind those store bought baby carrots 🥕 I am so happy that you told us this Jeff 👍 I always thought that they tasted a little different, and with the outer skin having been removed from them makes total sense now! I frequently thought that the texture was always slightly different. It always bothered me that I always ended up having to throw some of them away because they would quickly turn a dry whiteish colour, again I’m assuming that’s because they had their skin removed 🤔 I will definitely stop buying them from now on and try to be more successful at growing them myself! Cheers buddy 👍 😁 🥕
I've never grown a lot of roots but I'm interested. I'm diabetic and roots have so much stored sugars and starches they send my glucose through the roof. I avoid grocery store produce unless it's organic - but even then I'm never sure how honest they are. We have a lot of farmers markets where I live and I can most of my food (what I haven't gardened) for the winter. thanks Jeff!❤💯
Another thing I found out is that a lot of carrots sold in North America are imported from halfway around the world. How is this a good idea? What a waste of fuel, when they could just as easily be grown locally.
Luckily in U.K. these things tend to be more expensive. Always buy stuff you can identify as ‘real’ and take pride in doing a bit of work to produce good food for your family. Good info’ as always.
That creepy clorox bath those carrots get are the reason, even when I was younger and highly saturated in processed foods, the white film and the cookie cutter shape just told me to stay away. Eeek.
I wondered about this because these carrots are often bitter, like their full size cousins. Look for the small french carrots, cost more but are a naturally small carrot. You can tell them because they are small but fat.
Many people are new to the world of gardening. Heck, many people (young people) are new to the world of BUYING food. I'd never chastize someone for not knowing something.

And the taste difference.... It's crazy right?

Yes! Bony carrots in the store- they are chopped up, sanded carrot nubbies!
Ha ha exactly! Nothing like the candy we get from our gardens!
I love stores that sell ugly vegetables! Also, I think the same thing applies to those pre-cooked, peeled beets that you can buy - Love Beets??

Bruh, this explains so much! I've been bamboozled!
I hear you man.... I always wondered why they tasted so funny!
My hubby didn't believe me when I told him about this years ago....then he tasted some fresh from our garden. I daren't repeat some of his expletives but he was very ticked at being deceived. Great information as always!
Oh Sandy, it's unreal the difference in taste.. Night and day!
Thank you! I’ve been trying so hard to convince my friends just what “baby carrots” are and how they are treated with chlorine.. Now I can show them this video.
Happy to help!
Yes, I worked in a place in Canada that did that.
Great video Jeff. I knew something was up with those baby carrots but I'm glad to be educated on why they just didn't seem right. I'll never buy them again.
Absolutely love growing my own thanks for sharing
Me too!
Me too!

Yup, as always, the best solution is to take control and grow our own!
Hi Jeff. Thanks for the video. Take care ❤

Yeah, I still munch on them at parties and stuff, especially if the dip is good. But no more buying for be.... Not now with what we know! Take care!
The test is in the taste. Haven't had a real baby carrot from the store in quite a while now.
Good whittlers needed at the carrot factory. LOL

Exactly! They taste... "off" at best, and don't last long at all!

I'm with you on that one.... Farmer's markets are huge around here and I'm so thankful it!

Chlorinated bath?? Eeww!
Thanks for the great video! ❤️
Yup, that was my exact reaction too!
Luckily in U.K. these things tend to be more expensive. Always buy stuff you can identify as ‘real’ and take pride in doing a bit of work to produce good food for your family. Good info’ as always.
100% agreed. The less "produced" the item is, the likely the better it is for you!
Carrot candy from my garden but I have avoided store baby carrots for years
🥰😍 Love your quickies 😘
yeah, I like it short and sweet. In this case, facts.
Me too Anni!
That creepy clorox bath those carrots get are the reason, even when I was younger and highly saturated in processed foods, the white film and the cookie cutter shape just told me to stay away. Eeek.
Thanks Jeff! I knew they were cut & shaped , but not about the chlorinated bath...🤮! Won't buy any more! 🌱🌱🌱
Right Patricia? I can't even think about eating them anymore.....!
Wow❣️ I never knew that either. 😮 Thanks so much for sharing❣️🥰
Cheers, thanks for watching!
I’ve known this for years, never buy them.
The taste alone makes them not worthwhile....
I wondered about this because these carrots are often bitter, like their full size cousins. Look for the small french carrots, cost more but are a naturally small carrot. You can tell them because they are small but fat.
100%....after eating the ones from my garden, the store bought "baby" ones are soooo bitter.
Is this the same in Europe?
They are made from full grown carrots but not dried out old reject carrots. That is a myth.
Eewww. Thanks for sharing, though.
I have always known this and avoided them. Not sure how people could think they are really baby carrots.
