When great improvisers use chromatics, they still outline the chord. One of the hardest things about improvising is landing nicely on the notes that you will play, because unless you can play perfectly by ear, you will not end up playing exactly what's in your head but rather some combination of what's in your head and what comes out when following the changes. A lot of that comes from transcribing or playing written solos, listening, and really noticing how each note feels on your instrument.

some/more of the non-horn players sing along with their solo because that's how they think the melody of the solo. Horn players also do that but they aren't able to sing while playing (except when it's the meaning, cfr. Multiphonics) It's a good way to have a clear solo build
@BroakenClock A few reasons. Soloing on an Upright Bass can be difficult to listen to so maybe he attempted to sing what he was playing. singing it also gives a good harmony in octaves considering his voice reaches higher pitches than the bass does. I sing when i solo and i do it on a Bass Guitar. I think its creative. Quite a few jazz guitarists do this as well. George benson being one.
maybe on a reed. I play the trombone and I can assure for trumpet, tuba and trombone. growling is achieved by a sort of Flutter-tongue, Singing is for multiphonics. I would like to see the first trombone-player achieving a Multiphonic by different fingering! ;-)
when soloists like marsalis go in chromatic sounding riffs that are all eighth notes what are they doing, i just cant figure it out. It sounds like they are simply going up a scale but when i do that it sounds bad, I try to play what comes to mind but that doesnt work too well, it might come with practice but i just wanna know how to start that. Go to about 1:10 after wyntons repitition part, thts what i mean, If ur good with solos plz msg me because i need a lot of help with it plz and ty!

promenade sur les champs elysés of Sydney Bechet
When I played bass I hummed 'cos my singing voice was too much like unto Satchmo's!
Does someone know what's the name of this song?

It's not just chromatic intervals, I heard 4ths, 3rds, and other intervals. Just listen, keep trying, and you'll figure it out.
bob willber at the soprano
Mis alumnos dicen que Dan Nimmer se parece a mi... hahah,... pero creo que eso es sólo al comienzo del video. Él es mucho más joven que yo.

great performance the only thing i would say is wilber is a little too loud and over powering
