@@stevenmyhre2242 Yes! It sounds like 1967. Definitely a hit that sounds like it came out during the peak of the Vietnam war. 1970-71 was a continuation of mid to late 60s vibes since the decade was barely starting.
My girlfriend and I were 15 and crazy about each other. This was our song. I sang it to her and we sang it each other all summer in 1970. She was my first love, but just like the song, I lost her that fall. This song will always have a place in my heart.
I met her when I was 16. I went into the service. We saw each other over the years for a while. It’s been 23 years since I have seen her. I still dream once and a while of holding her hand or seeing her in a wedding dress. This is my favorite song and it is her to me. Can not listen with out tears flowing down my face. This is what Soul music is about. I am 66+ now and still feel a love for her as strong as ever. I always will as long as I have this song.

It was three piece suits and groups in the 70’s. You’d tune in the Soul Train and you see the groups impeccably dressed and doing them steps. They were iconic and we held on every word. Even tried to do a little solo act to our girlfriends while we drew close together on a dance floor. First song that I ever slow-danced to. I was 13 y.o. in 1970 and was at a dance at my elementary school (8th grade). I'll always remember you, Dana Ward (R.I.P.) and Lisa Farrington.
I'm like Jerry, I want to thank people and the generation before us that left us with such wonderful music. Stacy Lattisaw released her rendition of the song, the elders let us know, this isn't a new song.
Came across your comment and I had to say something. You’re right. I’m not entirely sure what this song’ s about-as the lyrics are a little cryptic-but it wraps a peculiar type of haunting nostalgia around the listener that seems to suggest the relationship in question wasn’t entirely healthy, more like a ‘trauma bond’ or something. The relationship I’m in right now is like that. The intimacy is all but gone; all that’s left is the complacency of being around each other. We’ve just gotten used to it. Love’ s not always enough, and sometimes you have to turn the page and leave each other behind in order to grow. That lingering nostalgic longing remains, tho 😢

Yes - it is sooooo soul - tearing --- many songs back then in this time period were like this! "Tragic" songs were what I believe they were called.
