A shame the scoring was not included at the end. I've discovered he ended up 30 points or so behind Malinin.
However, if Jason wants it, he will have an unparalleled career in Ice Shows once he stops skating competitively. He is now as good as Hanyu was in interpreting the music and expressing feeling through choreography. His spins are perfect. Watch the spins again. It's like the skates are slotted into one tiny circular groove on the ice. A shame he touched a hand to the ice and missed the next to last jump, which was to be a double axel. Nice triple flip right at the end, though.
I always wonder whether his lack of quads, which is intentional, is because he really can't and never could raise his skills to complete a quad salchow or toe loop or whether it's all psychological. That is what prevents him from coming close to or exceeding 300 points and winning gold medals. Glad to see him still representing the USA and hope he will continue to do so in Milan two years from now.
He always gives a splendid performance.

      TES: 83.07 + PCS: 92.41 = LP: 175.48
I don't know if he's currently training them, but at his peak he definitely could do the 4T and 4S in isolation. They just never got consistent enough to do in competition. Considering how hard he has to work to get 3.5 turns (ie. 3A), the quad is that much more difficult for him. He did try for quite a few competitions, but then the quality of the rest of the elements would suffer. I guess in the end his team decided he would simply score higher ditching the quad and trying for a clean program, which has worked well for him. I doubt we'll ever see him on a World or Olympic podium, but at this point in his career it's no longer about that. As he said himself, he's just out there to perform and he doesn't even look at the scores/ranking anymore.

@@singsongeric He's not there just to perform. He said he did not look at the scores or ranking of his competitors in the short because he prefers to focus on his performances. But he definitely wants the highest scores and ranking he can possibly get for himself.
His 3A usually comes easy to him, he doesn't under rotate much or often (he used to not miss one 3A for entire seasons after moving to Canada) and the quad was getting there but the stop in training (and lack of comps) because of the pandemic really affected him, Now he doesn't try it because the risk of injury is too high, not worth it at his age and he can get big scores without it.
