For starters owning a robot is not a matter of a one time purchase fee. There's endless maintenance costs that are way more high than paying an employee's salary. The idea of a HUMANOID robot replacing jobs is very farfetched. A humanoid form robot is not very practical and efficient for any task, it's slow and requires more processing just for navigating space let alone do the work. So in a sci-fi world yes we humans would be put out of commission, but in the real world robots will be nothing more than gimmicks.
Hi, thanks for your thoughts. You are making a good argument. As mentioned in the video, the robot is nowhere near production ready but when it comes, it will be interesting to see what it can do and how much the maintenance will be.
It’s like Elon Musk watched all the futuristic movies and is commercializing that tech (AI to navigate the world, self driving cars, robo servants, life in space etc). Gotta love him for that
Haha totally agree, #elonmusk is like a kid in a futuristic tech-candy store with Billions of dollars. But he's building cool tech, so gotta give him that.
Tesla is really good at commercializing and promoting products. It’s the same as McDonalds vs gourmet food. Is McDonalds healthy or a great place to make a living? Well it can make a lot of food really fast and as cheap as possible. It is super useful though
Even if it was usable, but the prices was in the millions, it would never catch on, thats why it is worth mentioning that the plan for these robots is to be affordable. Thanks for your comment though, and I agree, they aren't that useful yet, but that could change
i hope to have one. When my parents get old. I'll have the robot to take care of them while I work. Or actually have the robot work for us. I rather just play as human being. humans would only play and robots would work. Monetary system abolished.
That would be awesome. Are you generally a first adopter of technologies? I think these robots could turn out to be an investment or asset rather than just a consumer product people spend money on. I want to get one too. Maybe not the janky one that can't walk yet, but down the road when they become useful.
Thanks for explaining what their design philosophy is. I wasn't impressed by the walking of the robot, especially when compared to Boston Dynamics. But hearing why they build it the way they do definitely helps put things into perspective! Keep making these videos!
Also genius move since they already have all the data from the self driving cars they’ve been collecting for years that they can apply to the robot navigating the world
Not from today the industry uses robots to build cars for example... Be aware that human shape is NEVER the best one to achieve some industrial tasks. The more the robots get into difficult specialized tasks, the less they look like us. So the question is: Why spend so many money to build squadrons of humanoïd robots? For which use?
Hi Oryjen, thanks for your input. In my past live, I was a mechanical engineer that worked on surgical robotics systems, so I 100% agree with you that specialized and niche tasks need a unique robot design. In my mind, the key thing to consider is the goal to produce these robots in scale and cheap. And it is hard to produce 100 different robots for individual use cases at scale and cheap. Because of that, Tesla is focusing one design that could fit many use cases. A lot of things these robots could help out with are designed for manual labor and with a human - ergonomic design, which is why tesla chose to go in that direction. having a general purpose robot that you can train via AI could help with some of these jobs could be huge. But I agree, we won't have optimus performing robotic surgery, or do precision spot welding. But maybe they can help with packing stations, getting groceries, cleaning, or dishes etc. Did that answer your quesiton?
If it's linked to other robot's to learn from each other then using weapons could become a good possibility. If one is taught to kill with those weapons, and that is exchanged between robot's. There are also people who could change, or write their own programs. The only way I would get one is if there is no connection to other robot's. No linking to the internet period.
Hi, thanks for sharing that concern. That could become a real issue. Just wanted to let you know that my hypothesis about an app store and robots learning from one another is speculation. However, I wouldn't see why tesla isn't implementing that to make the robots "better". I could see Tesla doing something similar to the App Store. Where any new apps need to be thoroughly vetted by the Tesla team before they are made public on other robots. And I could also imagine that you can "turn off" data sharing, similar to what apple or Microsoft do with their operating systems. Thanks for bringing up your concern!
@@MoeLueker exactly, but more of the apocalyptic type. I am not much of a conspiracy guy but Elon having thousands of satellites in the sky and millions of robots on the ground... not sure Elon is the right kinda guy to be given this much responsibility to.
If you put it that way, you make a good point. Sounds like the villain of a james bond movie. These tools could be used for bad things, but they could also have some positive impact.
Industrial workers who can be replaced by robots can be replaced today by industrial robots. It usually makes not much sense because those robots are too expensive. So this Tesla bot must be cheaper than specialized industrial robots. Machine learning is not exclusive to Tesla cars and humanoid robots!
I'm sorry but you missed the whole point. Elon himself has stated and this is a quote " we need to figure out a different system aside from money because most jobs will be gone in 10 years" When they are building themselves human labor is gone. Andrew Yang was right and you missed the entire point
Hi Brian, thanks for bringing that up. I thought about including that when I talk about the economic impact of the robot, but ended up not including it. But you're right, it would have been worth including that. Thanks for pointing that out. 👍
It is really about the AI versus the hardware boston dynamics does not have the same type of AI they build the hardware but their AI for real world learning and operating sucks big time. The robot care barely function, I think anyone that compares Boston to Tesla Bot does not understand what the companies are doing and how they are majorly different. Imagine if Boston Dynamics took their AI to operate automatically in the real world like cars do. Which is a massively difficult task that the human mind performs more than a dance. This is why you do not need a license and training to dance. The task the AI is completing is amazing and placing this same AI into the Dynamic bot will be time times greater but their is still an issue of the way Boston utilize data from radar, sensors and etc while Tesla AI utilizes camera only visual, this two tech from a operational sense are not on equal footing and the hardware of Boston is advance beyond Tesla. The hardware is not that hard when compared to software.. I wish people understood this more and do not compare the two companies and the goals. Tesla has the advantage of AI and Software and Boston has the advantage of Hardware but lets see, I will bet my money on the man which placed reusable rockets in Space.

Really enjoyed this Moe!!! Keep em coming please
Thanks! Will do!
this was super informative omg thanks for making this!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for the feedback :)

Interesting analogy, never thought of it that way, but it fits well
Optimus isn't really useful yet. So why are we already talking about price?

@@MoeLueker yeah. Like taking care of elderly like my parents. Its massive a lot of work when they get old.
True, that is a good use case!
:) nice
Thanks!

mass produced robots that exponentially learn from each others mistakes.. yeah feels like i seen that one before
Feels like something out of a movie or what are you referring to? Thanks for bringing this up

better of with clones
Haha that would be next level! Too bad we don't have that tech yet.
