- To any Gouldian, this film needs no introduction. "Glenn Gould's Toronto" is the Holy Grail of Gould films. The first (and last) time I saw it was when I rented it from the Toledo Public Library in 1994. I've been looking for the film ever since; it is long out-of-print, and nowhere to be found (except for brief excerpts) anywhere online...until now. I had to pull some major WorldCat maneuvers to get it.
I will dispense with any detailed description so as not to ruin the astonishment you will experience upon seeing the film for the first time. Suffice it to say, you have never seen this Glenn Gould doing those things, nor would you ever have imagined it.
I ripped this straight from a decrepit library copy. (The library shall remain nameless to protect the guilty...namely, me.) Any imperfections, and there are a few, are from the VHS cassette. This is the more common though still extremely rare 25-minute version. If anyone can find the full 50-minute version which originally aired on the CBC, I will trade you my 2nd favorite Zippo for it (and I'll even throw in an extra flint).
Written by Glenn Gould. Directed by John McGreevy. Part of the "Cities" series of films. Nominated for three Genie Awards (the Canadian Oscars): Outstanding Documentary (McGreevy), Outstanding Independent Film (McGreevy), Outstanding Non-Dramatic Script (Glenn Gould). (Apparently, some piece of shit film nobody cares about beat it in all three categories. Of course, losing a "Genie" seems to be a badge of honor. Kate Lynch won the "Genie" for Best Actress that year for her masterful performance in..."Meatballs." I kid you not.)
Beautiful. I love these videos...thank you so much for uploading these!
'I was in Pittsburgh for a concert tour...the musical equivalent of a penitentiary sentence.' !!!
I love this so far! Thank you for uploading. Love the info in the sidebar too.
Ha. Thanks for the background info, yuzu. You can absolutely see his terror in the film. Not only does he flinch repeatedly, but at the last KABOOM he crouches & then rushes off-camera. Priceless!
How much I love him ♥️
thank you very much for this!
I miss this toronto
I remember reading about this Old Fort scene in Wonderous Strange.
They had promised him that they would not fire those guns and cannons. Gould was terrified and was worried about a possiblity of hearing loss.
I can truly appreciate his reaction knowing this:)
Which piece does Mr. Gould play during the intro of this delightful film?
Glad you liked it. You should check out the full version (20 additional minutes) -- I uploaded it a few months ago. Cheers! ;)
Someday, perhaps, we'll all get a chance to see the full 50-minute version. For now, this will have to do.
Not someday. Tomorrow. Part 1/7 uploading as I type this. The rest will follow over the next very short while. I tried to pick sensible cut points but not all are ideal; it all cuts back together seamlessly.
Ain't it a hoot?
I'd love to hear what people's favorite quotes are. Gould is at his witty best.
@witchcraftlord - Yes, Gould gets on a Gouldian roll, at times, and pulls a verbal 1955 Goldberg Variations with his speech. Makes a relistening to any Gould interview a necessity.
Please check out the full version of this documentary which I've also uploaded. Cheers, Ep
@thruthenight Sure thing! When you get a chance, watch the full 50-minute version, which I uploaded a few months ago.
@witchcraftlord - It doesn't get more Gouldian than that, eh?
Hey folks. I've uploaded the "complete" version of this film. You'll find it at my channel. Enjoy!
To you-know-who: I don't blame you for getting pissed off at the moronic comment aimed at you on this thread, but I had to remove both the original (indefensibly pissy) comment & your (justified but explosively distasteful) reply. There's enough such exchanges on the intertubes to last us all a lifetime.
Again, I understand why you blew your top, but a Gouldian space is not the place. Thanks for taking enough of an interest to share your earlier comments.
Yes -- a rare "biting" comment from the usually ebullient Gould.
