I agree! New surface not necessary, but offer as an added option. If it’s a resurface, then i most certainly will recommend and use G-tape. Definitely use it on my beams and ledger prep.
The deck I'm doing now many of the spots wood deck boards were screwed you can tell the water puddled on screw heads and tracked thru to joist rotting them. So while the tape I think is expensive I'm gonna use it on the new joists and the old ones that can still be used.
That's a good plan. The tape per roll seems pricey, but it only works out to about 40-50 cents per square foot on the deck. Cheap insurance to extend the life of the deck!
Biggest problem with decks is not enough air flow. Ppl want the sides closed in for aesthetic reasons. In cases where the deck is very close to the ground its more likely to rot out.
Taping the joist offers a darker background that hides your clips even more. With that said, has anyone here used black gorilla tape instead? Your thoughts? I found to be cheaper and easier to apply.
Yes that is a side benefit. I don't know if black Gorilla tape has a UV exposure rating. If it does, then it might be okay. If not, then likely better to stick with one that does.
Never heard or experience this before. It's possible the adhesive could react and discolour the PVC, but the adhesive is facing the other way. So not a real issue from what we know.
The evidence is... if water stays off things, they don't get damaged by water. We know this, hence why we put shingles on roofs, flash windows and doors, put house wrap on house, seal concrete driveways, put shower caps on, use umbrellas, wax our cars, etc. Much like you can't put a definitive, concrete timeframe on "did versus didn't" on any of those things - you can't attach an arbitrary number of days to a joist tape either. It's far too circumstantial. But if you're someone who doesn't believe keeping water off lumber won't help it to not rot, then there's no amount of fancy black tape that will convince you otherwise. Hence why it's an optional item that one can use if they believe it will help, and not if they don't. You can't give an exact number of years that an UNTREATED decking will last versus a pressure treated deck, but we all accept it as true that the pressure treated deck will last longer. Why?
Waste of money! I just replaced deck boards on a 22 year old deck, zero rot on the joist! If I taped the joist it would cost me $400 just for the tape. Don’t waste your money!!! I could replace all the joist for not much more!
Replacing the joists would cost about 8x more than taping the old ones. The point we have made numerous times is that yes...old lumber held up very well. New lumber does not. Not surprised your 22 year old lumber was still in good shape. The new treated SPF, SYP, Hemlock...is unlikely to have as much success over that same period. The density and old growth vs young growth makes a big different to the longevity of the wood in the elements.
tape is applied quality caulking ,wipes into surface, saturated, seals, lasts for decades tape is a gimmick for profit, tape breaks down ,dries out , don't waste $

Is it still necessary if your deck is/stain/sealed?...i used it...because it certainly isnt hurting anything
The joist tape is for the framing. Oiling/Staining would be for the decking. Unless you oiled all your framing as well?
Would it be wise to put joist tape on the bottom of a posts that will be sitting on top of cement?
You would be better to use a 1" standoff bracket. But yes some sort of barrier is needed.

Yes you should always plan in some air flow.

Is there any truth to the statement "Don't use joist tape with PVC decking as it will cause a chemical reaction"?
Never heard or experience this before. It's possible the adhesive could react and discolour the PVC, but the adhesive is facing the other way. So not a real issue from what we know.
For Asphalt-based tapes, that's right. But you are fine to use Acrylic/Butyl with PVC.
Surely someone has evidence it either works or doesn't. Thinking it works vs thinking it doesn't work is useless.

Agree to disagree.
