Purchased this axe recently, overall a nice one, even if mine come dull as heck. Frankly I disagree with the politic of the sheath not being offered as well with the axe but oh well :-)
I have one of these, its great for limbing trees, really comfortable to swing around due to how light it is, I have it on the wall in case of home invasion
+Thomas Forster It seems similar to some Iron Age axes found in Gotland as well as some examples that you can see in Jan Petersen's book, "De Norske Vikingesverd", but it's most likely an interpretation of what someone thought fit the description of a viking hand axe.
Ah, thank you for informing me on this and it does look like some bearded axes I've seen. Though I believe it might be slightly larger than the ones I've seen however I'd need to see them side by side to accurately compare honestly.
I sanded and stained a replacement handle I had on hand, then tapped it on snug with a hammer, inserted set screw and viola, no wobble. No daylight showing around socket either. I am ready to face the zombie hordes now. 😎
mine came blunt, absolutely no working primary edge whatsoever. I was a bit disappointed actually, as my Cold Steel Special Forces Shovel actually came _sharper_ than my Viking Hand Axe. Thankfully I have the ability to sharpen it.
Do you plan on doing a review of the new (2019) Cold Steel Viking Battle Axe? It looks like a combination of their Viking Axe (Dane Axe) and their Viking Hand Axe.....which actually might end up being their best axe yet!
I just took a look at it and, yes I probably will. I have to wait for my suppliers up here to get it so it'll be much later in the year, but that thing is definitely worth a full review. Thanks for pointing it out.
@@NutjobwithaMachete No problem. I also noticed that they aren't in stock yet (Cold Steel says they are waiting for their first shipments of them to arrive). Looking forward to your review.
You’re very welcome. So the handle is egg 🥚 shaped. The narrow portion is on the front and the handle flares above the blade. Main shaft is 4 cm and the part above is 6 cm. I hope that helps.
Which is better in your opinion ? CS TOMAHAWKs or CS Viking Hand Axe The Riflemans Tomahawk could use a longer handle I keep hearing. Maybe the Viking hand axe handle would work for the Riflemans Tomahawk... what do you think ?
Brian Mccann The Rifleman's Hawk could definitely benefit from a longer handle, but so could the Pipe Hawk. The upside of them is the hammer-head on the back, but they weigh double the weight of the Viking Hand Axe. Personally, if I have to hump my equipment a long distance I'd rather carry the Viking Hand Axe. Thanks for watching and thanks for your question.
This is what I have been waiting for! I only wish the handle was longer - say 100-130cm. Ist easier to shorten than making it longer. And of course the screw (which I will fill and not use)
+Welther47 I think you'll probably enjoy it. But you're right, the longer handle helps. A friend has one with the regular length handle and I like my longer handle better. Thanks for watching!
I'm 2 years late but I'm not sure why you didn't mention it here or in the actual video.. it just says TAIWAN on the blade. A very annoying mark in my opinion.
lots of people keep reporting lose heads i hear, mine is so lose i duct taped it on, because i didn't want the screw in it. if its not too much trouble could you put the head on the handle of a tomahawk? i am trying to figure out if they made the heads to big or the handles to small, if its the handle i will probably replace the handle mine came with with a tomahawk handle, or if they sell the longer handle that one. thanks for reading my comment either way! awesome video like always!
porygon110 Thanks for the share! I've noticed that the handle top isn't quite right for the axe head, size wise, so it usually takes some fine tuning before I get mine to sit just right. Thanks again for watching and thanks for your comment.
porygon110 Very true. I just watched Dave Canterbury's video on a homemade spring lathe for under $40, so I might see if I can use that to turn out better handles for my hawks. Thanks again for watching!
Allot of people I know who bought this say they cut the handle down a bit and used it like a handaxe and say I should too, however to me..the head just feels too big to be an effective handaxe. Am I wrong in your opinion?
redith137 Since I have a CS Norse Hawk, I tried swapping their heads out. This one's head is just a little big for me to comfortably use on a 19" handle, but it might work on a 24" one just fine. I'll likely pick up another handle for this and modify it a bit. I'll let you know if I do up a video for it. - Thanks for watching!
I did and it was actually not too bad. It felled small trees fairly well and chopped up small lumber easily. The only thing to note is that when you are trying to split larger logs, it's easier to turn them onto their sides and split them that way. Thanks for asking.
What were the measurements on that set screw? When I look up an "m6 set screw" it gives me a bunch of different sizes. Could you possibly link one for me that will work? Also, did putting the set screw in tighten up the head to the handle enough to prevent wobble?
Magik Toazter I actually replaced the set screw they provided with a longer set screw. The M6 size should be .5cm wide. I found a link on Homedepot's website that should hopefully help: www.homedepot.com/p/Crown-Bolt-M6-1-0-x-14-mm-Alloy-Metric-Socket-Set-Screw-2-Pack-10668/203540342
Oh yeah, it's still good. It actually worked pretty well while camping. Obviously not a great splitter, but I built a decent shelter with it and was pretty comfortable.
They are getting harder to find. The only place I find it consistently in stock is here: www.knifecenter.com/item/CSH90BA/Cold-Steel-H90BA-Replacement-30-inch-Tomahawk-Hickory-Handle , but if you wanted to get a shorter handle you can also try here: www.warriorsandwonders.com/Cold_Steel/Cold_Steel_Tomahawk_22_Handles_Handle_Only. Good luck - I hope it works out.
+NewHampshire Bound You're right, it's 1.2 lbs (17.6 oz.). That's why I usually indicate to check the specs in the description, just in case I screw up in the video. Thanks for pointing that out, I've added an annotation indicating the correct weight. Thanks again for watching.
@@NutjobwithaMachete looked away for 2 seconds and missed it. Btw did you try doing the water trick to tighten up the head?? I've seen quite a few videos with people saying that their heads were loose too. But nobody seems to have tried soaking it.
@@NutjobwithaMachete cool cool.. just curious. The war hammer is about the coolest thing I own. Lol. Believe it or not it came pretty solid. Loren Garms I love it. Mine is just inside the spare room near the front door. Let’s say, for zombies...thanks for sharing.
I find that mine always gets loose. I soak it in a bucket of water overnight to swell the wood and it s fine for a few weeks. Great vid man.
Thanks very much. Yeah, eventually I put some electrical tape just under the head and it hasn't come loose since. Thanks again!
If you coat it or soak it in boiled linseed oil, it will swell the wood a little, and it will strengthen the wood, too.
Nice. Thank you for the time you put into this. I hope no one ever tries to break into your house. lol.
