The Fab 4 have really made a masterpiece here. Not that this is anything new. They do this time and time again. But this particular song in my opinion,is their best work artistically. Its an incredible piece of art that will survive the end of time.

The Beatles set the bar impossibly high; nobody has been able to even approach it since.

Truer words have never been spoken !!
@@rpminc1974 ua-cam.com/video/vbHMgqHtAy0/v-deo.html
@@bwana-ma-coo-bah425 It's very possible that The Beatles got inspired by Zappa. I've never heard them say that in any interview, but the possibilities are high. That doesn't take away the fact that A Day In The Life is still a masterpiece.
@@carl_anderson9315 do you really think that they would openly admit it?

Can we take a moment here to point out how so perfect Ring's drums were on this and indeed in every Beatle's song. He was the first guy to play the drums like a guitar, filling in the sound palette only with what was required, not trying to show off or dominate.
One of the things I loved about the Beatles was their wit and playfulness with each other. I remember an interview where John was asked if he thought Ringo was the best drummer in the world and answered "He's not even the best drummer in the Beatles".
@@Russ_Keith
John never said that, he always complemented Ringo’s drumming.
@@cremetangerine82 I've done some checking up and it appears you are right. The story, which appeared in The Times, was apocryphal and has been debunked. It's been attributed to a radio comedy show in 1981. To be clear I always thought John meant it as a joke and didn't expect his remark to be taken seriously. But I made a mistake in public and I'm always happy to own up when I'm wrong. On a personal level I've always thought Ringo's drumming was perfect for The Beatles and added a lot to the mood of the songs, this one in particular.
@@Russ_Keith
John could be verbally abusive to a lot of people in his life, but Ringo wasn’t one of them.
Hell, John, Paul, and George actively *recruited* Ringo into being in the Beatles!
@@Russ_Keith that’s been disproven. It’s a rumor that he said that and so many people believe it
Ringo's drumming on this is nothing less then spectacular ...
Yes. Ringo's drum fills are thoroughly fitting and enjoyable.
They’re outstanding.
One of my favorite drummers I ever played with, had previously been playing in a Beatles cover band. No coincidence, I think. Tasteful and smooth.
I was 11 in 1964 when we first heard the Beatles in the US. I remember there being a debate amongst the kids about who was the better drummer Ringo or Dave Clark of the Dave Clark Five. Some people preferred Dave because you could always hear him. For some reason on most songs you could not really hear Ringo but you certainly could on this song. Love it.
BTW I do also love the the Dave Clark Five. I'd love for you to react too their hit "Because". You'll cry. 😉
He plays his kit like it's a lead instrument
Agree. His signature sound was a very tight snare head coupled with a very light touch, and sparse fills. Fantastic sound.
After listening to and being a fan of The Beatles for over 50 years (and I’m only 60) this is still THE one song that makes the hair on my neck stand up as soon as John starts singing. And it happens EVERY SINGLE TIME! Probably my favorite track of all.
Same! I've loved this song for 45 years (I'm 52), and I have no idea how many times I've heard it... hundreds of times? Thousands? And it triggers an intense sensory/emotional/memory overload every time. Pure genius!
It’s oddly prescient about his murder as well.
Amen
Only one song makes the hair stand up 😱
@@TheDivayenta How?
The Beatles - Once in a thousand years.
Yes! Exactly! Like, did God just say, "Okay, here, now, these four guys!" ? It is hard to believe that it was all just luck and happenstance that the Beatles all just somehow ended up together and changed music forever....
For a further surreal experience: “Across the universe” or “Lucy in the sky with Diamonds” but yes. Ringo’s drumming is masterful in “a day in the life. “
Also, "I Am the Walrus"....
and Tomorrow Never Knows, the gateway to the psychedelic period
@@buddyneher9359 Within you Without You ...Happiness is a Warm Gun...Fool on the Hill... etc...
carol.....tomorrow never knows is the ultimate surreal experience. it comes out of nowhere.....
Nowhere man
George Martin was a brilliant producer, he made just about every whim the Beatles had come true!!! RIP George Martin!!!👍✌😎
And Geoff Emerick.
It was a perfect marriage.
@@eddiewillers1442 No doubt! I assume you have read his engrossing book! A must read for Beatles enthusiasts.
@@kennethlatham3133 Yes, I read it. So great him being, literally, the kid in the control room.
The 5th Beatle if there ever was one!
When Sgt. Pepper's came out in 67 rock music journalism was born. It was now considered an art form worthy of criticism. A Day in the Life is not just considered "their best song", it tops many all-time best lists.
A day in the life is really two songs put together.
ua-cam.com/video/vbHMgqHtAy0/v-deo.html
What makes this song special to me is that two of the most popular people on earth gave such a modest account of what a day in their life was like. Remembering a friend who died, reading the paper, being late to work, having a smoke...it wasn’t about being rockstars...
This is one of those albums that even after fifty years you remember exactly where you were and who you were with when you first heard it.
15 years old sitting in my bedroom.
First time I did lsd. Sr year in HS. I know I’ll never have such a surreal experience ever again in my life so the nostalgia is real.
I think everyone should do a psychedelic at least once and when you do- you should definitely definitely work this album into your trip.
@@futurereflections4097 am surprised out of all these reactions know one mentioned about the conspiracy theory evolving Paul.
@@jeffmartin1026 Same here. And I remember I was speechless for at least 5 minutes before I can react, trying to assimilate what I had just heard...
People that think they not like the Beatles don’t actually have a clue what treasures are in their catalogue
According to recording engineer Geoff Emerick's book, each Beatle would arrive at the studio with a new song and demo it for the others, just like anyone else, really. One day John showed up with this song, sat on a stool with a guitar (or piano; can't remember which) and sang & played it. When it was over, Emerick said they all sat there in stunned silence. Can you imagine being a little English fly on THAT wall?
Geoff emmerick can't even remember who played the piano on day in the life so I don't think he's a valid source. Also John and Paul created this song entirely together
@@eziospaghettiauditore8369 John wrote the first and last part himself and Paul wrote the middle part. They then merged the two as they each couldn’t finish their own songs, they didn’t write this together from what I’ve heard.
@@eziospaghettiauditore8369 nah mate, John brought the song in. Macca had nothing to do with it originally. Later on John shared the song with Paul and the band. Then Paul suggested the middle bit and John approved and then with George Margin they arranged the whole production
Simply my favorite song of all time. The vocals, the drums fills, the basslines, the piano parts, the string entourage, the lyrics, Paul's part, that opening, the final chord on piano...... completely timeless. Everything in this song is so perfect, so magical, so dreamy and surreal, just masterly. The best song artistically and also the best song by quality, writing and singing. It's the peak of music, humanity's masterpiece.
The brass is amazingly powerful as well
"I Am the Walrus", for more Beatles surrealism.
Lennon said he literally lifted stories from the news for most of these lyrics. The man who blew his mind out in a car was an MP who did, in fact, blow his brains out at a traffic signal. The entire Sgt. Pepper album was during their transcendental experimentation/drugs phase.Their minds were expanding. Would also love your reaction ( if you've not already done it) to Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds. Thanks again from Las Vegas! 😃 👋
I thought the story was that he was doing lines of coke while stopped at a red light and his car got hit because "he didn't notice that the lights had changed". He was a aristocrat hipster who liked to hang out with the swingin' London scene and party with rock stars. Marianne Faithfull referenced it in her autobiography.
I've heard of being impatient at a long traffic light, but that's ridiculous.
The accident killed Beatles friend Tara Brown, who was an heir to the Guinness fortune.
@@garylee3685 YES. This was the anecdote I was vaguely remembering from 'Faithfull'. Thank you.
and the plaintive "Oh, boy".
That little odd bit on the end, was put on the inner liner of the turntable record. Back then, the needle would get to the inner liner and just play forever unless the needle was manually picked up. So the Beatles thought it would be cool to put something on it, to make people think the album still had material left. But unless the listener got and checked, it would just play that bit on an endless loop infinitely.
The Who also did it with the snipett being "Shut me of - shut me off".
It's called the lock groove and I think the Beatles were the first to put sound on it
That's remarkable! My older brother had the vinyl, I only ever had on cassette and cd format. Ugh...They were so fucking amazing!! 🤯🤟🏻😎👍🏻
@@jeffmartin1026 Lou Reed did that with his obnoxious "Metal Machine Music" album too, 60 minutes of guitar echo, feedback, etc. and he made the last bit repeat endlessly so the listener would have to get up and turn it off.
Well done for mentioning Ringo, his drumming here is wonderful, does exactly what its supposed to do, hold everything together.
I’ve always loved the reverb on John’s voice in this song.
Recommendation- “Because” by the Beatles.
You will be shocked by how good their voices sound.
It's 9 part harmony
@@ralphcordon5688 No, it's three-part harmony but they recorded their vocal parts three times to make nine voices.
John's voice is like a razor made out of light.
fantastic image!
Great description.
Ethereal is the word that comes to my mind👍
Perfect
The long piano chord fade is achieved by raising the faders on the mixing board as the chord naturally decays. It is followed by a few seconds of silence that actually contains a dog whistle, Lastly that final repeating blast of reversed voices was designed to play in a vinyl records play out groove. Over and over again till the record was manually stopped by the listener. Most Beatles fans would agree that you've reached the pinnacle of the Beatles recording career with A Day In The Life. All the songs you react to from here on out will be judged against this song. Their are other mega-classics like, In My Life , Yesterday and Something. But this is the Beatles and the EMI recording staff's finest hour. Remember Hari, this was recorded and mixed on a 4 track tape machine!!! Astonishing. RNB
Supposedly the volume is turned up so high that you can hear the air conditioning turning on in the studio, but I’ve never been able to hear it.
@@Fool3SufferingFools Also, according to recording engineer Geoff Emerick, while the several piano players were standing at their instruments holding down their keys to the E chord, Dingo shifted his weight slightly, causing his shoe to squeak ever so slightly, prompting a light glare from Paul. Like they were supposed to be Anne Franke's apartment/daytime quiet. Supposedly, you can hear Ringo's shoe squeak, but you have to have it cranked, headphones on and no noisy yammering around you.
@@Fool3SufferingFools *Ringo, not "Dingo"; stupid autocorrect.
I had this playing on the stereo (old school here) and forgot about the dog whistle. Suddenly my dog Cocoa started barking like crazy and running around. I was like, "Oops, forgot about that." This is my absolute favorite Beatles song by a factor of 10, and I love all of them.
@@sourisvoleur4854 For that last chord I think I read it was all 4 Beatles plus George Martin (who worked out the chord) on 3 pianos??
I agree, a work of pure genius.
I love how the Beatles stamped their entire identity into this song more than any other song of theirs, and the identity of Britain and its grandiose history, as well. It's a timeless classic that far transcends anything else they did, in my opinion. Not that the other songs weren't epic.
Only the Beatles could perform a song like this. Their story telling what separated them from the rest. They also had four singers which was also rare. Hard to get tired of them because of thier diversity in voice, music, and story themes. They also had a sense of humor which made the more relatable. The end was multiple pianos hitting the cord at the same time. Love your gigs. Keep up the great work!
Everyone thinks it’s John singing the “ahs” after Paul’s “...went into a dream” line at the end of the bridge, but thanks to access to the isolated vocals becoming available due to Beatles Rock Band, it’s now rather obvious that it’s actually Paul singing it. When you listen to the vocal track you can hear his sharp intake of breath between the word “dream” and the first “ah”. It’s easy to understand why people think it’s John - the reverb and the nasal quality - but it’s actually Paul!
Yes you're 100% right, the pitch of the ahhhss is pure paul👍
@@rainpain3655 right? And it’s much more obvious when you hear the isolated vocal.
That's the insane nature of random coincidence that these two brothers-from-another-mother.....who each LOST their mother early! Damn..... would have such similar vocalist "DNA" in them. That blend---then throw in George Harrison's voice just amp up the insanity---and you've got a vocal onslaught that changes lives, like a peaceful bomb blast.
I never knew that. Yes it sounds like John
I like the way the voice goes from right to left and back again with earphones it seems to go over the top of your head
I remember well into the '80's this song was pretty much certain to be rated top song of all time in any music poll anywhere in the world. Still is mostly but the Stairway / Bohemian / Teen Spirit fans might disagree. For me its the production, those Abbey Rd engineers were literally white coated science engineer boffins , the clarity in capturing music from 1962-1967 is like a supernova in advancement and the The Beatles were the rays of light.
What about the American Pie fans? (Personally, I think it's Stairway..)
1964-1970, actually.
Interesting thing to do. Compare Before and After the Beatles.
The big hit in the year before, 1963, was Sugar Shack by Jimmy Gilmer and the Fireballs.
The most rocking guitar was Walk, Don't Run, by the Ventures.
Compare those with anything done by the Beatles, and with what Hendrix did five years later. Two completely different planets.
@@bdheine2300 Stairway is great, but probably would not have happened if A Day In the Life had not already established the ideas that a song to be played on the radio can be longer than 2.5 minutes and doesn't have to be the same all the way through. As with lots of these things, if the Beatles had not done it first, it might not have been possible for anyone else to do it. See the long na-na-na sequence on Hey Jude, as one example.
Couldn't have said it better, mate. A Day In The Life is the absolute peak of music.
I can see Stairway being a challenge to the song, but those other songs you mention are a total joke. (And no offense intended.🙂)
There was NOTHING like this when it was released in 1967. Imagine putting this album on, and listening to this song for the first time. It would have been overwhelming!
Yes, that's my memory of first hearing this!, from a friend's album, which I then went and bought after we played both sides. Back then almost all music was heard on AM radio stations and longer songs like this and the long version of the Door's "Light My Fire" were considered too long, probably because of the commercials.
The middle section is all Paul. The rest is John. They were working on two separate songs and decided to blend them together.
the orchestration was also Paul's idea.
@@celinhabr1 and it's also Paul singing the "aahs"
@@pmsfar-outgrooviness8025 no.. that's clearly John's voice. The "Ah's"?? Every Beatles fan knows that's John.
@@celinhabr1 yes, and I love to turn you on as well. So it is really a Lennon Mac cartney song
That's not true. John only contributed the first line of the song independently
I think this and "Strawberry Fields" are my two favorite Beatles songs. Glad you mentioned Ringo on this. He doesn't get enough credit. Some of the most unique and innovative drumming you'll ever hear that adds so much to the whimsical yet haunting nature of the song. And yeah, you always gotta let those Beatles songs playout. You never know what Easter eggs they have burred at the end. Another great reaction Harri!!
They werent gonna fool.me again after BLACKBIRD 😀
Paul had fragments (woke up, fell out of bed, dragged a comb across my head) which they used in the middle. I remember when I got this album. I took a bus 45 minutes each way, came home, the album was warped. Took the bus back, exchanged it, came home. Played it. I think I just stared into space. I probably played it 20 times before I stopped myself. The lyrics were on the back. I had never seen that before. This was all the rage.
Yeah, that was first album with lyrics on the sleeve. Pioneers. Again.
I think the fact that people had to wait longer than ever for the next Beatles Album (SPLHCB) added to the excitement.
@@jeffreykaufmann2867 very 👍true
Revolver was too ahead of its time that's why it wasn't as popular as Seargent Pepper plus In America the album was Butchered to 11 Songs.
A lot of people miss that Paul has a section in this song. Just like Hard Days Night. The one section, "when I get home..." was Paul because it was out of John's vocal range.
Listen to 'Tomorrow never knows' that one is definitely hypnotizing
My Favorite Beatles Song A Beautiful Spiritual Song, RIP John Lennon And George Harrison 😍🙏😁💯
When we listened to the actual vinyl album, we didn’t just click on “stop” when we thought a song was over. We just listened, all the way through, so we never really thought twice about whether there were any of those little extra flourishes at the end. We just listened and enjoyed. Of course, I was only 10 years old, so all the drug references were lost in me.
Still gives me goosebumps listening to this song, having known it 54 years
Just enjoying the journey with you. The Beatles have everything, artistic depth, like this song, fun, innocence, hard rock, love, soul, etc.. And its all awesome! WTF!
McCartney is my favorite bassist, Im glad you brought up his playing.
😎🤟
Mine too..👍🏻
Oh and a great druming on A day in the life.
You want surreal?!! Listen to I Am The Walrus!! Absolute masterpiece.
Yes! Please listen to The Walrus!
John wrote this song from items that he saw in the morning newspaper. Another masterpiece!!
John wrote half and Paul wrote the other half, it’s two songs put together to make one
"She's Leaving Home" is one of their best IMHO.
Agree. In My life should be in everyone's top 10
She's leaving home changed my world...I wasn't alone at last.
I agree Ringo’s playing here is tremendous, Paul’s bass, John’s singing, oh my goodness. A day in a life. Thx. .
Also on the SGT Pepper album, one of my favorites is “Being For The Benefit of Mr. Kite.”
There is a video of this song, with footage of the staging of the orchestral portions. Other rock-pop musicians are there too, including Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones and Mike Naismith of The Monkees. Watching this while listening to the song really combines well with the full experience.
I'm so glad the Beatles were in my lifetime
So glad to hear you giving Paul the credit he so richly deserves in regard to his bass playing.
John’s singing voice appears to be floating over the gentle instrumentation.
The Beatles Forever! 🇬🇧🥰🎶🎶🎶☮️
"Not to be listened to while driving a car" :-) Loved your reaction. Have you listened to Tomorrow Never Knows yet? It was the precursor to this, and ushered in their psychedelic period. On the Revolver album. What is incredible to get your mind around is that the Beatles evolved from She Loves You (yeah, yeah, yeah) to A Day in the Life in just over 3 years. That is just indescribably .... indescribable.
No i havent..So thats where James Bond film makers got their title 😀..yea the growth is just incredible!
@@HarriBestReactions Harri, talking about movie themes, I wonder if you can put ,Live and let die in your list. Paul was asked to write the theme for the Bond movie of the same name. Linda wrote the little reggae bit in the middle. Thanks

A plaintive quality that was universally appealing (theoretically). John's voice seemed to have that.

I just love sharing The Beatles with others, even if it's just virtually. Thank you! I remember hearing this song on an A.M. transistor radio in about 1970. I couldn't believe my ears. Still can't.
I have loved the Beatles since before I could speak . . . they were among my first loves in the universe of music. When I was a small child, maybe from 5 to 7 years old, the crescendos would just pull me into another world, and I would actually get dizzy and disoriented . . . A Day in The Life may well be the greatest "rock" song yet written and produced . . . it is astounding, and still gives me goosebumps, 50 years after hearing it for the first time. Magical! And yes . . . George Martin was an absolute genius!! Love this man's reaction to this!
My favorite Beatles song!
This would have to be on my top 3 Beatles songs. It's a masterpiece.
The best reaction to this song i've ever heard. Well done Harri.
I had the pleasure of meeting Pete Best over 20 years ago. Super nice guy and very approachable. But I just can't imagine him coming up with something as unique and innovative as what Ringo did with the drums in this song (or countless other Beatle songs for that matter).
John's voice is so haunting in this merry little ditty. (Love me some double-consonanted 5-letter words). This was their masterpiece.
Those words have three consonants.
Beatles Masterpiece!

Yes, This is one of my favorite Beatle song, But then again there are a lot of favorites.

There was nothing else like this when it was released. That's what's amazing. Only the Beatles and a rare few others in the industry could have gotten a label to allow the studio time to pull this off.

An incredible musical journey.
I Love The Beatles ☮️
Good to hear Ringo’s drumming praised - it is superb in this song, which is worth listening to just to focus on the drums. I remember hearing the Sergeant Pepper’s album for the first time when I was 16. The local radio station played it the moment it was first available - we were counting down the minutes - all the way through with no commercials! - Honestly!. I was listening to it in a Triumph 3 with two friends. Yes we were cramped, but the music was sheer ecstasy, beyond anything we had heard before. This was the first album to have a theme and it was a complete departure from anything the Beatles had done before. We loved it instantly. It is hard to express the incredible impact this album had.
'An out of body experience'. That's exactly how I've always felt when listening to this song. I was just never able to put it into words. Thanks, Harri...you've just Dran-Oed that clog from my brain
I am a 55 year Beatles fan. Your reviews are awesome. Please keep them coming! (Thank You!)
Ahhhhhh...Ringo's drums! Totally incredible. Sounds like falling down a flight of stairs with style. Harri, that silence between the ending... was for only dogs to hear. That 45 piece orchestra rushing to the highest point in the score, it's like riffling through a rolodex of memories of your mind...you couldn't hear their songs from Revolver through SGT Pepper albums, you had to listen. Great reaction as usual. ❤👊
"falling down a flight of stairs with style" - what a great description! Agreed, Ringo's drumming is absolutely stellar (very appropriate for a Starr!)
Listen to it while I drive ALL THE TIME
Mesmerising and way ahead of its time.
Ringo’s drumming on this song is like lyrics of their own!
"I am the walrus" Magical mystery tour.
I've been listening to that song for 50 years and never thought about it like that. But now I will, am, can, & .....
Im suprised that nobody recommends A benefit of mr. Kite. Great song
She's Leaving Home.
Oh Yes.
True. It's very underrated. Maybe because John lifted most of the words from an antique poster but the trippy funfair organ effects are fantastic.

Pure Genius
in the time before internet, this was often considered the goat of rock songs [based on airplay and sales etc etc] and is the first real song I ever learned all the words to.
John Lennon was reading a newspaper. The lyrics are news stories. Paul added the middle. Brilliant.
Absolutely Beautiful 🌹
I think I'm right in saying this album was recorded on just 4 tracks. Might be wrong. All this great music with no computers or digital technology.
I've heard the same thing. I believe it is true, because Fostex used to make 4 track recorders for home musicians. I remember the ad for them. They made reference to the Sgt. Pepper's album.

Beautiful reaction Harri. The Beatles at their impossible best.
Glad you recognized the incredible drumming by Ringo . He really creates a mood
Great 👍 🎶
Glad you like it!
One of my favorite Beatles songs!
My favorite verse has a brilliant innuendo in it:
I read the news today, oh boy
Four thousand holes in Blackburn, Lancashire
And though the holes were rather small
They had to count them all
Now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall
The Beatles Are Still Great 👍🏻
Been a fan of the Beatles since 1963. Never got tired of them.
Man you're so genuine with your feelings, and the way you talk about them, it shows on every second that you're a good person and I wish you all the best
Ringo is a great drummer. Very under appreciated because he often keeps it simple, not flashy. Thing is though he is SO solid like a foundation that will never crumble. He deserves much more respect!
if you like paul's bass playing you should listen to "HEY BULLDOG". great loud bass line. watch the video of them in the studio. paul and john having fun with this song.

The dark and churning, mysterious revolving of a tumble dryer just about right - you are also very eclectic and apposite with words by the way and look like a nice person.
