My Dual can play records vertically and horizontally. It also has auto start and stop. Hell it can even play 78's! I got mine for 100.00USD, + 100.00USD for a hand made Grado needle and cartridge.

All record players have built-in speakers you’re probably more interested in turntables which do not have speakers and requires you to buy speakers with it

Being a vinyl person I found this very interesting . A good review , you covered the details of the product and it's operation well. It is certainly a talking point and takes up less room. And is pretty well constructed , so it should last . It may attract dust a bit though not having a cover .
Great review - thanks for the attention to detail in both cartridge weight, skating, and setup (and unlike other reviews, you're very cognizant of not letting your arms/hands get in the way of our viewing). I think I'll wait for v2 or 3.
I am more interest in the color vinyl and picture discs. Back in the day I love playing these disc over the standard color vinyl records I had in my collection.

I'm actually rather surprised to see how good it is, I kinda expected it to have at least one major flaw. The lack of Anti-skate isn't great, but I think it can be forgiven either way. Great b-roll with all the changing vinyl by the way, enjoyed that. Are you aware of Pro-jects VTE wall mount turntable? It hasn't quite hit stores yet but I'm going to do a little video when it arrives!
+Nicholas Joost Agreed. I looked at this channel originally to get some reviews before buying a dash camera. After a snoop around, I quickly learned this is a treasure trove of cool tech both old and new. I find myself looking forward to subsequent videos.
linkfan95 Not true. You always need to go with the manufactures recommendation. Some needles are way more dull than other so they need more weight on them and it wrong damage the record since it’s dull. But if it’s sharp and you put 5g, well then your fucked
+Albion Laster Because, for some of us, you simply cannot beat that familiar 'thump' followed by the odd crackle as the stylus hits the vinyl (no matter how gentle you lower the arm). CDs and MP3 are simply far too clean and clinical, so much seems to be lost to technology. An original War of the Worlds album, for example, included a large booklet full of artwork which transported you to the time and place. I have a Monty Python 'boxed set' - the cover unfolds to form a box which resembles a pile of LPs - makes for hours of great reading... If I hear an 'oldie' today, I can often still picture the artwork on the album cover as it sat on my bedroom wall.
The "Tracking Force" is usually for the standard orientation. For Vertical Orientation, at least for this maybe 2.75g to 2.85g might work better due to the different azimuth weight issue. This is just a guess, and this design is more and less complicated than I might imagine.
Thanks for showing this -- it's pretty interesting. But this turntable lacks an anti-skating mechanism, which it still needs despite the vertical orientation of the platter. Skating force comes from the angle of the stylus/cartridge relative to a straight line between the tonearm pivot and the stylus. The friction caused by the stylus riding the record groove will try to pull the tonearm inline with the cartridge and not inline with the length of the tonearm (see the closeup of the tonearm at 6:11). This amounts to a slight inward force. Without any countermeasure, the stylus will deflect from center just a bit, and this will cause some distortion and asymmetrical pressure on the inside wall of the record groove.
5:15 Atmosphere-Can't break. 5:35 The Roots-The Session I must say, you enjoy a lot of music that I wouldn't have expected. I've seen and heard you mention a lot of underground hip hop and I think it's great that it connects with all sorts of people.
Awesome and thank you for the review! If I actually had one of these, I probably would have gotten about 9 minutes of actual enjoyment out of it, so thank you for saving me the set up time and the $400.
So glad you've you reviewed this player ,these have been all over Facebook last month or so and they looked very interesting ,might have to have a look at getting one at some point
The Audio-Technica AT-LP120 turntable comes with that same cartridge, the AT95E, and its recommended tracking force setting is around 1.5-2.0g, so it's tracking a bit heavier there, probably to compensate the verticality there.
Great review Techmoan! Really cool design of TT! And not a bad price either! I didn't even know before I watched this and your other vertical tt video that it was even possible to have a vertical turntable! Very informative as always
Excellent video, and a really nice machine. This is so much better than the cheap Crosley turntables and those based on them. The AT95 is a cracking cartridge and though the tracking force is a little high, as you rightly say it's not going to do too much damage to records like the aforementioned machines will. It also sounds really nice for what it is. I remember reading somewhere that there is a spring inside designed to counteract the pull on the arm, maybe that can be adjusted to solve the jumping issue?
It seems surprisingly decent for the price and it being a Kickstarter product. You'd obviously be better of buying a more reputable brand at that price range, but still not bad for a novelty product. Good review as always, I really enjoy your channel!
Techmoan, I noticed when you played the casanova 70 record you had it on the 45rpm even though its a 33rpm record. Why? I noticed how different and higher pitched the song was. Even though for the brief moment it played, I liked it so much that I went and got a copy of that record for myself and recorded the output from the Air track on 45rpms just to have on my phone for on the go. Weird huh?
+Landrew0 That's not right, many musicians and studios issue their recordings on vinyl again. And the audiophiles always say that vinyl is still the best audio format, most audible than CD. Off course with a good quality turntable not like this :)
I'm super jealous of all that picture vinyl! So few labels do that these days, but I suppose that's part of the fun with collecting, you get to find all those unique LPs.
I'd have said the 5.01g is more likely to be off because of the weight rather than the scales
Рік тому
Wonderful video. I am from the era of the 78 RPM records so I am quite old :) I appreciate to see these things impossible to get in Argentina with +400% inflation per year. Cheers from Patagonia.
Don't get me wrong it looks the part, but they added a horizontal arm to a vertical player, just, why??? The weight is spot on but if the weight was configured differently it wouldn't skip at the beginning.
I dont know if his scale picked it up at the right weight. the distance away from the record because of the scale, could cause it to have higher weight than at the record level.
I got one via kickstarter, or rather I got 3. The first one had really bad skipping problems (there were a significant number of us in the same boat), the second one was better but not perfect, there seemed to be way too much downforce, it would distort the cantilever of the stylus. I haven't used mine for ages now. I still have that 'project' LP12 that I've meant to rebuild.
+ericBdrums The record is actually at a very slight angle, not perfectly vertical, so with some counterweight adjustment it has a nice gentle resting position against the record.
He meant the "Crosley" brand. The actual hardware on those is by Hanpin Electron, and while those aren't all bad, the particular briefcase brand really scrapes the bottom of the barrel there, delivering something that wouldn't be worth even $30 for a list price of $170. It uses a piezo crystal pickup to cut corners on cost of the whole device, which incurs 5 grams or more of pressure and besides sad sound quality, that's just not good for the records at all.
Wait a second was that Atmosphere? I'm from Minnesota and may I say sir you are awesome for using that record for this video. I see Atmosphere and many other Rhymesayers each year at Soundset.
It's pretty cool looking. I do not want one, not just because of the skipping issue but I just don't see the need of needing it. I like your recorders!
Its an interesting design but doesn't seem to take up that much less space than a conventional horizontal deck. Also the build quality seems a bit agricultural. And built-in speakers on a turntable are never a good thing! Its a novelty but audiophiles are going to run a mile!
I don't like the fact you have to touch the belt to adjust the speed.. or that it's even exposed to the air, or that you even need a belt.. it's just going to break in a couple of years due to sunshine exposure. Also you can't play 78rpm records with this thing, which is weird considering the 400$ price tag of this device. That and the fact that it skits a lot make this a pretty poor value-for-money phone player...
+redtails a different cart is needed for 78"s, also the design has to be changed a bit. The high end Technics turntables cost thousands and are not designed for 78's. Would you trust putting your 78's in that record player? This machine is made more for looks than for performance. It is neat to have it, but I will stick with my TD-146 for enjoying music.
***** Some high end turntables (check out idler turntables) are built exactly like that. And some are worth tens of thousands of dollars. A belt is cheap and easy to replace, you can still find belts for turntables made in the 70's so no problem there, unless you don't get that belt greasy there will be no problem. The problem with this machine is that there is no way to know that the speed is accurate and there doesn't seem to be a way to adjust it.
sobolanul96 Finger grease (natural oils) is not a good thing and when he handled the records the way he did I was screaming inside. Never touch the surfaces of a record and always handle by its edges. With this fiasco (why I never liked vertical turntables) you can't properly handle the records and for that exact same reason is why we should not be handling belts either. At the very least they could have used a mechanical changer like almost all others have. The lack of 78RPM was the first thing I didn't like and this thing is 400 dollars? No thank you.
Thanks a million for this review.... was interested in how they handled it. Can you please measure the inward tracking force (how much force is being pushed toward the inside of the record?
For added interest I was looking at designing a deck based on a ceiling fan. Hammer a nail in the ceiling that will connect to the attached record and play it through some quality recessed speakers and that would make a good talking point. The only downside would be providing a set of step ladders to turn the record over! It would still do less damage than a Crosley!
very nice job here, i enjoyed your review much. i'm waiting for my gramovox for over 6 weeks now, can't do it anymore longer, i'm so looking forward to it! :)
I like mine very much as a standalone player. I have a Pro-Ject connected to my main system. I usually play older records, jazz and whatnot on the Gramovox. The sound can get quite loud enough for my bedroom. I got really pissed at Gramovox for making us backers wait for so long to get it, but once I got mine I went over it with a fine toothed comb and am very impressed and pleased.
I think the thing that would turn me off this is the screw-on piece to hold the record onto the platter. I feel like if I was in a listening marathon and going through albums with some regularity, having to fumble around with a big ol' screw would get obnoxious quick.
+Daniel G My wife and I just got this player two days ago. We've listened to several albums back to back, and although it's an extra step, it's not annoying to me. If anything, it puts me more in touch with the process. I like making espresso and hand grinding my coffee beans though, so maybe not for everyone.
Hello "mister Techmoan"... I've modified my floating record to By-pass the integrated amp, and i can say confidently the integrated amp is tailor made for the integrated speakers and acts as a filter to get louder highs and lower bass. And that filter gets transfered as is on your big speakers when you use the line out rca. Not to mention the integrated amp does have some fairly high distortion. All in all, i realy recommend you to try it with a by-pass to your own phono stage. After that, the only complain i have left is the "ok" cartridge and some motor noise that transfers to the needle you can hair at high volumes. Regards, Benjamin
During audio trade shows in the late 1960s, Dual used to hang their 1019 turntable upside down to demonstrate it's dynamically suspended arm design and holy horrors... it played! Quite well thank you... no doubt a lot better than this P.O.S.
could be wrong but I think the reason why there's two belts is not to have one as a replacement but to help with the speed up for 45rpm records by installing both of them on the motor and around the platter
+Peter Smit ahhh Mr Obvious, pleased to make your acquaintance . However two can play at this game. On planet Earth we have infinite vertical space, but limited horizontal space. Mic Drop. Boom! (goes the dynamite).
+Techmoan Uhhh... not when you have to consider a _ceiling_, or even worse, _the shelf just above_, in many configurations! Point goes to +Peter Smit for the WIN!
Because, silly Techmoan, one tends to assume (or... "assYOOM," if I say it _your_ way) that these things are normally not used outdoors! {Rolling over the "Moan's" precious snobbery mic. with my truck, instead of a funny little mini-car [of any brand}, haha! CRUSH!} +1 to Peter Smit again! But... while (or... "whilst," if I say it _your_ way) I say that, I still like your videos. :-)
I really love mine, and you really should hook up external speakers as it sounds great. The AT95e is a great mid range cartridge, I may upgrade later but for now it does the job great! Also regarding letting it "get up to speed', because the platter spins freely you can actually grip it by the locking knob and give it a gentle twist to help it get to speed. We're only talking about saving a second or two but it helps. Should be noted other turntables with the same platter/belt design have the same warm up.
OMG this whole time i thought the name of your channel was technoman.

It's $550 now

Wait a second was that Atmosphere? I'm from Minnesota and may I say sir you are awesome for using that record for this video. I see Atmosphere and many other Rhymesayers each year at Soundset.
I see that you like colored records haha
He probably just used his more visually appealing records to show it off
It's pretty cool looking.
Knight Rider Channel The majority of "Audiophile" tables on the market are not built much better.
That "Back to The Future" picture disc is beautiful.
+redtails Exactly my thoughts especially with finger oils and stuff. I actually cringed when I saw him touching the belt.
*****
Some high end turntables (check out idler turntables) are built exactly like that.

Finger grease (natural oils) is not a good thing and when he handled the records the way he did I was screaming inside.
Well done on choosing the right sort of Kickstarter campaign.
I was here before the music had to be changed

Thanks a million for this review.... was interested in how they handled it. Can you please measure the inward tracking force (how much force is being pushed toward the inside of the record?
next time, upside down turntable
actually it looks like they have a soft start built into the drive motor to stop it from slipping or overloading on startup. nice touch.
How rich are you to keep affording all these items?
+mrrkdino I don't think he has children.
He once said that his Dashcam Videos finance his Hi-Fi Videos.
+Rising Sun But he says on this video @ 0.50 "I decided to put some money in and get one". Can't have been cheep.
This channel is his job.
6:18 Man that platter looks out of round
very nice job here, i enjoyed your review much.
i'm waiting for my gramovox for over 6 weeks now, can't do it anymore longer, i'm so looking forward to it! :)
would the star wars record look good in this 😄
I like mine very much as a standalone player.
Not a fan of MDF with veneer.
The 1019 Dual record player (and other Dual's) can play vertically. An amazing hi-fi record player forgotten to time.
There is no way I would put my personal vinyl on that turntable.
You are awesome for putting the names of the songs I'm the description! Thank you, Thumbs up!
Regards,
Benjamin
During audio trade shows in the late 1960s, Dual used to hang their 1019 turntable upside down to demonstrate it's dynamically suspended arm design and holy horrors... it played! Quite well thank you... no doubt a lot better than this P.O.S.
@ 5:14 seconds was that song from one of atmospheres albums?
Puppet!!!
I love that collection of albums you got there.
I see at least 2 Sony PS-F5 non-working units cheap on eBay right now, why don't you buy and repair them and make a video
Another great piece of work.... Like the detail about the tracking force. Brilliant.
Please review one of those briefcase cheapo record players in debt
could be wrong but I think the reason why there's two belts is not to have one as a replacement but to help with the speed up for 45rpm records by installing both of them on the motor and around the platter
it looks interesting but it sounded pretty poor & i don't like that arm skating everywhere
Anyone know what album is on there at 5:33, the black and orange one? Looks beautiful.
You don't save space.
You win space horizontally, but lose space vertically.
+Peter Smit ahhh Mr Obvious, pleased to make your acquaintance . However two can play at this game. On planet Earth we have infinite vertical space, but limited horizontal space. Mic Drop. Boom! (goes the dynamite).
+Techmoan
Uhhh... not when you have to consider a _ceiling_, or even worse, _the shelf just above_, in many configurations!
Point goes to +Peter Smit for the WIN!
+Maxx Fordham Peter didn't specify indoors or outdoors, so why restrict my answer.
Picks up mic then throws it down again loudly.
I'm curious what issue of that Lou Reed Tranformer did you play in this video? The disc look black and gold?
The links to the company selling this disc is in the video description.
this thing is... sooo ugly...
+Hunter Rodrigez Check out Vertical CD players they were so cool.
What were the songs that were played over the vertical record player 5:05
I really love mine, and you really should hook up external speakers as it sounds great. The AT95e is a great mid range cartridge, I may upgrade later but for now it does the job great! Also regarding letting it "get up to speed', because the platter spins freely you can actually grip it by the locking knob and give it a gentle twist to help it get to speed. We're only talking about saving a second or two but it helps. Should be noted other turntables with the same platter/belt design have the same warm up.
I like the guy at the very end - reminds me of my Uncle with the things he says.
this looks really cool with those picture disks, very unique look
I like how involved things get changing speeds, that is kind of cool.
