  • Review and discussion of Hofner Limited Edition Cavern 500/1 “LOST BASS”.
    Quick trip from Paul McCartneys 1st Hofner bass then from its refinish and repair job, until it being stolen during LET IT BE/ GET BACK sessions.
    Thanks to Nick, Cathy, Rob and everyone over at Hofner for making these beautiful bass guitars and for letting me obtain one.

    Hey Ardy, wanted to point out a few incorrect details from your video. Paul didn’t send his bass to Hofner to be refinished it was done by Bruns techs in London. Which is why it has a custom made pick up mount and not a “hofner esque” paint style. Also it’s not documented Paul used his Cavern on any recording from Let it Be. Thankfully we have gotten to see it a few more times because of the Get Back film. But it was mainly seen in twickenham besides that one day at Apple studios which at that point they weren’t finished writing the songs.

    Yeah, the low E "thud". When I bought my 125th Anniversary '64 Reissue (that came with flat wounds), I actually called my vendor immediately and asked "What's with this thud?" He reassured me that's just the way Hofners sound LOL. It wasn't the volume so much (you would know more about that than me) but the non-musical, almost toneless unamplified thud.

    • @homemovies751
      @homemovies751 2 роки тому

      @MN Mitchell Makes sense. I replaced the wound strings on my Rickenbacker 4003 (and a kit bass) and no thud. I wrote that up to the longer scale. Don’t think I’ll ever need to change the Hofner strings (the bass never leaves my bedroom LOL) as the amp improves the thud.

I have 3 lefty basses: a Rogue VB100, a Hofner (with black flatwound strings), and a Rickenbacker 4003. I'm actually gonna be playing em again soon since I recently joined a Beatles cover band. 😊

    Hi Ardy.
    If I may I'll just tidy up a couple of things. Höfner didn't do the rebuild of the bass. This is from a magazine article I wrote in 2021...
    In the spring of 1964 the 61 bass was sent off to Sound City for an overhaul and repairs though it is not known who decided to do this, nor precisely what they requested should be done. Whatever, the bass was significantly altered. It was completely resprayed, possibly by Burns, in a three-part dark sunburst poly finish, the two pickups were mounted in a single large (presumably) wooden housing, and the original "tea-cup" knobs were replaced with what seems to be knobs from a radio. Why such drastic action was taken is not known as all it really required was a general overhaul, the broken pickup frame replaced, and a thorough clean.
    It is very likely that the refinished bass can be heard on just one Beatles recording that was released and this is "Revolution", the single version. The LP version is probably the Rickenbaker 4001.
    Anyway, all good and a great video my friend.

    Good day Ardy! I adore your musical skills and I idolize you so much. You don’t know how many time I’ve watched Fab Four videos here on UA-cam. I think you’re one of the rarest people to even come close to Paul’s vocal and instrumental skills, which make The Fab Four more ultimate than any other Beatles tribute bands. I think you’re awesome brother, and I’ve watched your cover on Paul’s song “Here Today” (I think it’s very wonderful and easy to listen to). Keep up the great work, I idolize your skills very much. I’m still using my sister’s acoustic guitar which is good enough for me anyways because of tight budget, although I play her right handed guitar like a left handed one because it turns out that I’m left handed when it comes to playing guitars and my finger placement is upside down when it comes to playing the chords. Your tribute band, The Fab Four was actually the main factors that inspired me to grab my sister’s unused dusty guitar and bring some life back into it, (she doesn’t use it anymore, but she does let me borrow it). You’re playing motivated me to learn how to play the guitar. I think I’m doing my best, although it wouldn’t hurt to keep on practicing. God bless and good luck to all of y’all in the future Ardy! Peace and love to you brother!

And the basses were a rip off/copy of, at the time gibsons new EB1 with its single, front loaded mud bucker pickup.
