I have worked on many GR series engines since they were new. Every time I have seen the cylinder 6 bearing be spun has been due to either being ran low on oil due to oil cooler ruptures or having a ruptured VVT-i supply pipe for bank 1. Bearing 6 is the last bearing to receive oil in the engine. Most of the time with that failure, the exhaust cam gears will show some separation as well.

You guys can sure beat fast and furious with your car creations. The MR2 was a with of art. The conversion alone from 4: to 6 cyl in that cramp mid engine required a lot of automotive engineering skills. While it broke down as the new owner was about to take it home, it didn't disappoint me at all. I saw your you tube channel accidentally thanks to social distancing with this pandemic. As a store parts manager retiree from one the US larger auto parts and service chain, I'm impressed by your enthusiasm, technical expertise in every vehicle that you work on. That MR2, Nissan 240sx, Subaru STI are examples of what highly skilled technicians like your group "Throittl" can do like an artist that executes painting murals or sculptures. In the 25+ yrs with that auto parts chain, I never saw a tech that would work on a car that would do it correctly the first time. The come backs I had to put up with. The technicians were there just there to make money at the quickest possible way bc if commissions on parts and labor, but at the expense of customers who may find the service done to their cars are not worth the money. You guys will do the work to satisfy your customers. Wish I discovered your you tube channel much earlier. That MR2 would be worth winning as it was manual transmission. Will continue to watch your channel from New Jersey. BTW, I still drive 6 speed manual transmission 05 Nissan Xterra 4x4. It's got only 55K miles on the odometer and I'm a real senior, senior that never owned an automatic transmission vehicle.

As soon as you pulled the head off you could see that on bank 2 cylinder #6 had piston to head contact. The aluminum was beaten and somewhat shined where the contact occurred both on the piston and head. That was most of the rattling heard when the bearing cratered. Credit to you and your team that you replaced the engine and got the car going, there really was no other way.

Had spun a bearing once and at first thought it was a lifter since you hear it coming from the top. But once I removed the oil pan and rocked the rods one of them was loose. So had to rebuild the engine, the crank had a hairline crack since I drove it like that for a bit.

  • @shujabeg7625

No surprise that it was bearings. I was more surprised the engine noise wasn’t picked up before the high revving clip. It was that loud during the drive to the highway.
It could be an incorrectly installed bearing which could have lead to said oil starvation. One can only suspect you deliberately wrecked the engine to provide the content simply because it was that noticeable.

My bet is, they used a "thick" oil, with performance driving in mind, and the guy who won the car smashed the gas pedal when it wasn't up to temperature. The oil cooler didn't help also. Now, I could be completely wrong since I don't remember what oil they put in it, or if they installed an oil thermostat.

The thin sheet material is the bearing being extruded out from between the crank and the sides of the rod big end, as the piston slams the upper bearing shell into the journal. Once enough material has exited, the locking tabs no longer work (or exist) and the lower shell can spin too, or the upper shell remnants will spin and nest inside the lower shell. Either way, the rod is junk and probably the crank too. Could be from debris imbedding into the bearing shell, possibly from a careless oil filter change in the past or a bad filter allowing a large chunk to bypass. Heavy bits would tend to stay going straight down the oil galley until forced to turn, I.E. hitting the back end of the passage and then being pushed down into the last oil galley leg, entering the rear main cap, scratching that last main bearing on their way out to the #6 rod bearing where it was pounded into the soft bearing and slowly over time chewed away at the crank journal until friction overcame lubrication and everything went South.

  • @iLikpie110

This is a common problem on 2GR's its mainly due to the oil jets not properly lubricating piston #5 not enough oil lubricating means for friction causing it to fail.

Two things I know one is something plugged the oil hole to that bearing one is bearing moved and covered the hole due to stretched rod bolts or heat the other is something plugged the passages to that journal but to just say lack of oil to me means the oil in the pan ran dry I’m saying I don’t believe the oil pan was low on oil sucking air and only damaging one rod bearing that the sign I saw watching this little bit of info from the video 👍👍🔥🔥🔥🔥

Possibly the force created from the crank pulley bolts rubbing on the engine mount pushing all the force on the rear most rod first as its closest to the flywheel & clutch. Being pushed back the other direction when the clutch pedal is depressed. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the rest of that was pretty fresh & in good condition. This engine was rebuilt as indicated by the appearance of the good bearings. The babbitt (outer bearing mateial) indicates there is no mileage on them; that babbitt wears in before the first oil change and the bearings have a different appearance.
The single scores on some bearings are from contamination when rebuilding. You can clean engine parts in a jet wash twice and still have rag material/dust/metal stuck somewhere from just setting the engine parts down in a shop nothing short of surgical-room clean.
Contamination or improper tolerances (reference the OEM service manual and use calibrated micrometers) I think are the two most frequent reasons for engine failure within the first hour of running.

Looks like oil surge/lack of oil, see where the pick-up sits may have used all the oil in the pan to where the oil level goes below the pick up. Under hard acceleration or cornering if you have a high capacity pump and standard pickup height occasionally you can get oil starvation. Lower your pick-up height and increase oil capacity in the sump if possible, adding baffels in the sump around the pick-up can also help.

if i remember right there was a loud ticking from the VVT on first start up and that is normal but it did seam excessively long which says to me there wasn't enough oil pressure or the pump didn't want to prime itself. it went to that other shop and got the oiling system primed then no more ticking but i think the damage was already done. if that bearing is one of the last ones to get oil it may have spun partially and welded itself to the rod holding on for a good while until finally a good hard run loosened it back up and just obliterated it. that's the only scenario that makes sense to me with the information given. or if you wanted to test the injector to see if that one was causing a severe lean condition. that is unlikely but could smoke 1 bearing. automotive computers are pretty slow and can miss things if the sensors are reading within certain parameters but like i said injector is unlikely. the computer should have found some sort of fault if it was that.

You can definitely tell the motor was rebuilt at some time there are heat marks all over the crankshaft. if you look at the crankshaft you will see some bluing or discoloration on it and that is where it got hot before and they reused the crankshaft when they rebuilt it. I would also bet that is what caused the oil starvation to that rod bearing, because when it spun a bearing before some pieces of metal went through the oil passages and ended up blocking that one either partially or completely and starved it of oil.

If it was rebuilt and the bearing tolerance was too tight or too loose itll spin a bearing pretty quick. Especially if its on the loose side. The oil fil wont hold up causing the bearing to start grinding at higher rpm. Couldve either been a defective bearing. Or the crank may have been reworked and the size was off

Crazy it didnt lock up. Def wild. Guarentee it was from dry start. Motor sat forever, oil film drys up and gets tacky. First fire up tacky parts stick and shift just before oil presure makes its way to all oil surfaces. This is why acusump oil accumulators are so essential for first fire ups. Prelube the oil system before motor ever even rotates.

too much time spent accelerating can starve the oil pickup (the oil sloshes to one side and stays there away from pickup / centripetal force)
