Whenever he wasn’t in the finals, I was disappointed. But I also liked Holman, Duke, WRW, Monacelli Bohn, and Roth. To add on, it’s weird seeing Norm throw the ball and not hear the crowd yell “DUUUUUUUUUKE” as the ball rolled down the lane
I really miss broadcasts and everything from back then. Everything was just calm and collect.... I was a kid and a year from this day got my first bowling trophy in a youth tournament (3rd place). No internet, no cell phones... and the Nintendo was new lol. I am glad I was a kid during this time...I would take it over now days...any day..

He made some controversial remarks in 1987 that the PBA was not doing enough to help the players earn a living. It looked Dee Dee was there in body only. She had left Pete a couple of years earlier. They had reconciled but a year or so after this tournament she was gone for good.
Wouldn't be a PBA pro without at least one divorce lol. It's a tough life out on the road eating at burger joints and staying in crappy motel rooms. It'd be easier to name the players that DIDN'T go through a divorce if we're honest.

Agreed. Him an Nelson Burton Jr were on my TV every Saturday afternoon. I even recorded the telecasts on VHS so I could re-watch and study technique. I've never really gotten into this hambone generation with Rob stone. Randy isn't terrible though

You are absolutely right and you worded that perfectly when you said he "is one of the best SPORTS play by play broadcasters ever." To be a truly great sports announcer (in my view) you have to be able to do more than one sport, otherwise you are may be a great baseball or golf announcer but not "sports". Chris Schenkel was not just a bowling announcer but was also excellent doing golf and in my mind, only fate prevented him from becoming one of the all time great baseball play by play men. In any case, he was one of a kind and a good man.
What I remember about Bo Burton is that he was always really excited about "...the possibility of a tie!!!" It almost never happened, of course. But he mentioned it all the time. He was definitely pulling for it. lol

The crossoever talent the big 3 used to have is retired and gone. Regardless of the sport covered, the guys who had radio experience working in tv covered events better, and just being around mentored those that didn't.

Why was Mats Karlsson considered to be the first foreign born title winner on the PBA Tour? Guppy Troup was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. Guppy had already won his 8th and final PBA title during the summer of 1985.
Amazing that the prize pools in 1986 weren't drastically different than what they are 35 years later. The effect that a viewing public's change of interests can have.
Not to mention the sponsors’ interest. Yes, viewers draw sponsors, but golf, for example, still draws big money sponsors despite poor viewership v. the big team sports. “Royal Patronage.”

Back when the art of the release and timing were king: get nervous and you’d leave an 8-10. Or the 5-7. Champions were more worthy back then. Today, a weak release can even carry the 5 on a light hit. Ball technology killed this sport in the early 90s onwards.
So by your logic, Pete’s shot at 1:11:37 should’ve been a split? Balls were much weaker back then and a shot like that today carries the exact same way. I see people using modern balls averaging 150 in league on a house shot. It ain’t the ball, it’s the bowler.

Honestly you can see in how angry Pete bowls. It's nothing to do with the adrenaline of competition. He is just a angry person. Can see why he has married & been divorced quite a few times. Interesting that he is now divorced from Tracy. If you go back to the telecast where Pete won his historic 5th US Open. When Pete walks up to Tracy, you can see the look in here eyes that see was at 1st scared, until Pete must of said something..

Watching Bo's tips took me from a183 average to near a 200 average. Back when a deuce bowler meant something-late 80's, early 90's.

i was a senior in high school and watched this game WOW WHAT A BATTLE.
Duke and weber are my favorite bowlers.
Weber was dangerous. When he turned up the heat, he was nearly unbeatable. Awesome athletic ability.

$18,000 in 1986 is the equivalent to $42,000 in today's money. So I think they were technically making more than the bowlers are nowadays 😅
