- Buying an older, complex, premium car at auction is always going to be a coin toss. But when it's this seductive, and this cheap, I just couldn't resist. It could end up being an absolute bargain barge to smoke around in, or it could prove that a fool and his money are easily parted..... let's see!

Liking the "first impressions" style of this, it's nice to see the process of deciding what to buy - I'm hoping bargain over expensive fail machine with that history and ownership plus lack of diesel specific maladies. Bonus points for background Renault Wind content!

You got a great bargain! When the choice of CD's came out of the player it verified this! Really interested to see what the issue is and am hoping and expecting that it's one thing that's linked to all the main errors

What a dream to have a w221 even though it is more than 10 years old car but it is still an S-CLASS! I agree that it should be a petrol engine rather than diesel 👍😎
The only downside is that the m272 the balance shaft & timing chains..some of it the intake manifold breaks..even the post facelifted ones do have these issues regardless of serial number...so watch out for that..hopefully, everything will be good for another 10 years or so👍

I’ve always wanted this model for soo long.
One of these is a good buy , it depends on what mileage a person would do on a yearly basis as to what kind of troubles arise along the way but over all just doing any repairs over ownership would really only work out as much as a normal say ford sedan.
Rust should not be a problem with these models. Maybe the formal owner lived at the seaside. Or it was repaired and sprayed over at one stage.

Now that's a bargain, I fully concur with petrol over diesel .I bought a 04 S350 ie the W220 chassis and its absolutely smashing. I bought in 2017 for 1800 euros just across the border from you. Its an absolute pleasure to drive,I wouldn't swap it .... well except for a W221 S500
But you're missing the point here boys,listen to the purr of that beautiful V6petrol, that's what hits the spot for me,diesel never,next is the 5.5V8

i own the s320 and it's an awesome car. Just the airmatic compressor failed at 250'000 km. Now i thas 270'000 and it run like butter. Fornmy experience this car need only oil and filter every 10'000 km like I do

FYI I bought one exact unit recently during lockdown and I must say it’s a wonderful car, just some electrical gremlins that I need to sort out otherwise wonderful car to own and drive…:)
Just lay underneath at the back and unplug the electronic handbrake and then plug back in sometimes it will work
Nice job. I'm always a bit disappointed that the leather in these Mercs always wrinkles on the seats. I'm thinking about one.......but I would want a lot more options.

But I believe this one is a shorter version which could be W221.056 instead of L version W221.156
Keep a front air spring on hand at all times. $150 on Amazon. If you go to a shop in an emergency, it's $1200 per wheel.
It’s not 1200 I bought the air shock for 250 and put it on myself,,, it’s easy
I bought one 2 months ago, and a lot has gone wrong, but all are secondary issues due to the fact that the car won’t even start anymore
I always hated the looks of this gen. S class, but for 2K hell yeah...:)
Starter battery lives up front. Aux Lives behind back seat in boot/trunk
Clean car. Brake sensor needs attention. Capable of 550,000 ks.

Here the starting price for those is like 12k. And I really mean starting price, for a vehicle that has been driven +200 000km.

I am interested to know how did you manage to sort out problem with your hand break.I ask because I have exactly the same problem.
Couple months ago the break unexpectedly started making the same noise.
On the dashboard every now and then I get the message abs temp.unavailable (but only when I drive fast).
Did you manage to repair it? How much did it cost? Thanks.
Handbrake module is faulty or it could be related abs get a scanner and read the codes
I'd say you basically stole a great car! Hope sorting the e-brake won't set you back to much.
Most states here in the US have no inspections at all and the ones that do are mostly interested in checking some serial numbers on the engine. Nothing like MOT in Britain or TOV in Germany.
I bought a 2001 e320 about 3 years ago. I've had very few repairs. I did have to replace the conductor plate and shift mechanism. It has no squeaks or rattles and runs like a bat out of hell. It does have the AMG sport package so does not have air suspension and does not 'waft' down the road. Lol I love Mercedes-Benz.
