Outstanding review!!!! Cutting away that jack stand so that we could see a inside view was very generous! I love the new design however I always have a backup to my jack stands, sometimes a big block of wood! LOL Just to reassure me when I am under the vehicle.
My logic in wanting these particular stands is that HF presumably lost millions of dollars issuing all those refunds/getting bad press/etc. under the recall. I highly doubt they want to go through that again, and thus now have some of the most well thought out and robust stands currently available on the market. I’ll be buying 4 of these tomorrow
good job Harbor Freight, in response to the recall, they add the double locking safety pins. makes me feel very safe using. I have the pro lift 6 ton double locking with same design as this. very safe and sturdy
Thanks for posting this. I had heard about the recall, but hadn't yet done anything about my old HF jack stands (which were on the optional recall list). Yesterday I returned them to the store and picked up these guys. It was an extra $10/set, which seems reasonable given the considerable upgrade.
Great explanation and great cross cut view of how the jack stand works. I actually had a old HF stand disengage on me when my sons car was up on four stands. I bumped the lever ever so gently with my foot and the pawl disengaged. The car was then balanced on three stands. My wife saw it too. It can happen ! Hard to believe until you’ve seen it or have had it happened to you. Anyway, these new jack stands from Harbor freight are the Way to go now.
I have a project to do on my kia forte changing the inner n outter front tie rods I just orderd a pair gonna try them out..let you know how good the work fr my project.
I really like these! I may have to go get them. I honestly think the set I have still been using is the recalled ones 🤣 What's nice about that lock key stoping the arm from lifting and releasing is you can carry the stand around with them set at the height you always use without them collapsing when you set them down or the saddle lifting up if you grab them by it. I have pinched my fingers in them when I move them because the saddle slides shut when you bump the arm while carrying them. I know there is a little lock tab you're supposed to knock in when you assemble them but I do NOT because I like that they come apart. I've been known to used the saddle/rachet part in my press.
I have this style stand in Australia but the handle attached to the claw has a shear pin through the centre of the handles round bar that shears off if to much upwards pressure is applied to the handle while under load leaving the claw in its holding position and the handle spin free , a great design as i did break one pin but no failure of the stand at all , The safety features on those look very reliable i would definitely purchase them.
I returned the ones on the recall, even though I never had any issues with them. They issued me a card for store credit. I think these might be the replacements i get this weekend.
One thing I noticed was my new Daytona3 TON HD Jack stands have a small base than my recalled Pittsburg jack stands. It's less than 3/8" but I was disappointed in that. Seems to me that a HD Jack stand should also have a wide base. I do like that they have the locking pins. Anyone else notice this??
I have some Weaver vintage jack stands they are solid all around made back when all the quality stuff was made in America. Look the up Weaver jacks and jack stands
Does anyone know what the failure mode was on the recalled jackstands and what the cause was? Were the tolerances too great, allowing the ratchet arm to slide down off the teeth and pawl, or was there a material failure in the teeth which broke off? Just curious, I have a set of Jackstands from Harbor Freight, which aren't part of the recall... and would like to be able to inspect them each time I use them...
The teeth on the ratchet arm were too shallow, the manufacturer had been making jacks for lots of companies and the casting dies had worn out and were out of spec. They were visually alarming and both you and I probably would of never used the stands and took them back. People started testing other models after the recall and one fellow managed to overload his jack stand and split one of the welds on the side of the stand, so harbor freight did a larger recall to get them off the market. Other brands had similar recalls, they just didn't go as pubic as Harbor Freight did.
Was that stand that you cut away a hf stand ? Because that is not how the old stands worked. They had the teeth jamming against a cam, not a tooth. I looked at a few older ones including mine and no tooth was engaging. Looked to me like either a terrible design or incorrect installation. Either way, they got it right this time. And yes, as a long time mechanic, all stands had teeth engaging teeth.
I just got my exact 3 ton jack stands. I questioned myself on the length of the teeth being caught at 1/4 of an inch. Do u think the teeth could be a little more longer ?
If they would have made these like that to begin with, I would already own them. Unfortunately when they made the first bad design, I took mine back and bought some from auto zone that will probably be all I ever need. At least they are making them right, now.
To my eye, the steel on the new stands is thinner than your old ones (at least in the upper neck area where the bar is forced against by the pall). I’d be interested in a thickness measurement comparison.
I thought the only real issue with the old stands was that the pawl didn't have 100% engagement with the ratchet and thus could fall if the vehicle shifted, but otherwise they were decent stands. HF really went overboard with the engineering on these replacements from the embarrassment of the recall.
I needed a set of stands. I planned on buying a USA product. Then I found out that's nearly impossible. I bought these instead. Looks like a really great product but I still wish I could've found something locally that's a US product. Everything!!! is made in China these days.
Great review! However, bumping the handle while working under the car is very easy to do and there are other videos showing just how easy the old HF stands fail. Think about someone with a pry tool or swinging a hammer accidentally hitting the arm. The original HF Jack stands only required about 1/16" to 1/8" of movement before the jack would fall unlike the new one with much more defined teeth and safety pin. I cringed and felt sick when I thought about how many times I've put my life in jeopardy through the years with my old HF jack stands.
The pictures I seen of the really bad ones that were part of the recall hardly had any teeth. There are also UA-cam videos showing some that have about half the thickness of the teeth that they should have. I'm guessing the molds for the ratchet arm were too badly degraded and they should of been discarded. Personally I cringe thinking someone wouldn't of questioned them and used them anyhow. Had I seen a jack stand like that I would of never used it. All of that being said, this is also no excuse for the manufacturer. After the recall there were jacks that split due to faulty welds, Harbor Freight recalled them as well, later to find out those hacks had just been misused and overloaded. Sadly there are other companies that sold the very same jack under their name and never recalled them.
@@1D10CRACY Looking forward to an increased height capacity of the jack. These at 16.x inches, pulling transmissions with a HF trans jack, there is no clearance. At the moment using 20+ years old Craftsman jacks that raise to 21.x inches (3 ton), but they're 20+ years old, would like to replace them for another 21 incher soon!
Well, if the two teeth were on the same pawl, there's still a single possible point of failure at the hinge. Having a separate locking mechanism offers greater redundancy.
In other words, those claiming the car fell, obviously didn't use the pin. I'm looking for tools to buy my grandson who is about to get his mechanic certification. I want to get him tools that will keep him safe.
They sold Jack stands that failed that could have easily kill you, why would you trust them ever again 🤣 by rule of thumb they sold defective jack stands they will probably do it again.
Personally I trust nobody. But I am capable of looking at a jack stand and making an educated guess on whether or not it is built right. If you are buying a jack stand based on the brand name, you probably should rethink your plan. Most Jack stands are made in the same factory and just have different brands stamped on them.
Because they have redesigned them and they are now excellent compared to all the other chinese made stands. You can buy superior USA made stands from U.S. Jack, but you'll pay a LOT more. I trust these and I always have a backup method of support by adding a screw jack.
Nope, no misinformation here. I did not show the recalled jack stands, nor did I was say I was going too. As explained in the video, these were new jack stands designed and released shortly after harbor freight did a major recall of existing jack stands that were sold.
Outstanding review!!!! Cutting away that jack stand so that we could see a inside view was very generous! I love the new design however I always have a backup to my jack stands, sometimes a big block of wood! LOL Just to reassure me when I am under the vehicle.
Thanks!!! I typically use a 2nd set of jack stands and I almost always leave the jack still in place.
Good thing I found this video. Been under my car several times on the old recalled stands...
My logic in wanting these particular stands is that HF presumably lost millions of dollars issuing all those refunds/getting bad press/etc. under the recall. How do you like them?
@@aaronjackson9603 I’ve used them many times and still love them and feel very safe under them. Never had any problem at all
That's my same thought process, when they go on sale they go for as little as $30 and sell so over engineered which gives me confidence in them.
@@ericg5877 I’ve had mine for almost 3 years now and they’ve been rock solid. Always feel super safe under them. Happy wrenching! 🍻
Thank you for this outstanding review! These are currently part of the Parking Lot sale for $27.99 😮👍🏽

My jack stands are 10 inch diameter logs of hardwood. Have never failed.
Much less convenient and you can't adjust the height easy
I have a project to do on my kia forte changing the inner n outter front tie rods I just orderd a pair gonna try them out..let you know how good the work fr my project.
Thank you for the candid review. Based on your review I bought them .
Buying a set of these tomorrow. Decided to Google some reviews and came across this. Thanks for the review!
Oh, wow, Nice safety feature. I'm definitely buying a pair today. I did return my older set that was part of the recall a few years ago.
I really like these! I may have to go get them. I honestly think the set I have still been using is the recalled ones 🤣

Great job showing how the mechanism works on these HF jack stands. I did not know they had all these safety features, I really like that. Safety 1st 💯

Nice. Thanks for the review. Wasn't going to buy till I saw they fixed the issue. Just bought a set.
After I had seen this video I do plan to head to Harbor Freight to check out and perhaps buy a set of jack stands. Thanks for your video.
Extremely impressed. I know where I'll be getting my next stands
I still have two sets of the orange and white 3 tons, looks like it'll be a nice trade in.
I recently bought a pair of big red torin stands. The paw seemed like it didnt have even contact on the teeth

Also, the base is about 3/8" smaller in width than my recalled Pittsburgh Jack stands which I returned.
Just got these and the low profile 3ton jack! That’s for the review!
You are also the first guy to mention this feature. It was ignored by everyone else.
just bought some of those... they feel sturdy to me... thank u sir
I would absolutely use these. I will probably pick up a set net time I'm there. Thanks!
wish they had a better chain to keep from losing the removable pin.
I just got a pair myself, I couldn’t say no to $30 for the pair got them on their hot deal October 15 2023 harbor freight 👍🏻👍🏻🤘🏼
Great review,
Very good product ( i have the 6 Tonne version)
Fantastic channel, please post more ,👍💯
I keep watching for a sale below $49... I may have to cave in and just get em.
Is the Daytona tube jack stand 3 ton safe?
Defenityl I use them and I will probably buy the six and 12 ton jack stands.
If my local HF ever gets these, my current jackstands are going to Goodwill.
Looks like a pretty good redesign... I would use them.

Thanks two stands 3 tons capaciti or one of 3 tons?
The rating on Jack stands is for the pair, the combined total.

I have a Walmart version of these not safe cause no pin 🫠, going to pick up a set tomorrow 🫡 and a Daytona cherry red Jack
Huge improvement.
Over engineered big time. Good for Harbor Freight. I will definitely buy a set.
Cheaper than the Pittsburgh but a lot heavier. I guess that's fine if you're not driving them around.
Late to your comment, but for others, they do have a 3 ton aluminum now. Slightly more expensive but also much lighter and smaller.
Will they make these in 6ton
The folks in the store told me they were going too, but didn't say when.

are they 3 ton per pair or per stand?
Jack Stands are sold in pairs and their ratings are for the combined pair. Harbor Freight does sell 6 ton and 12 ton sets of this very same design.
These are great
Looks good but I'm looking for 6 ton I have a van
The den of tools channel said they are coming out with six tons!
Gotta hand it to HF.
Good stands
They did not want another recall! They went the extra mile with all this fabrication that I guess that’s why we don’t get so many coupons anymore lol
Why not just make a pawl with two tooth?
US Jack brand does exactly that. All USA made, but they are expensive!

I don't understand why they don't make the ratchet teeths 1 inch deep.
That will ensure it never fails.
Personally I would never buy a jack stand with a ratcheting mechanism. My 8 jack stands that I have all have a pin.
Heavy Duty… I’ve used a lot flimsier
