Cabin in the Sky (1943) Tornado Scene

- Tornado scene from the 1943 musical, Cabin in the Sky. As you can see, it is the same tornado from the 1939 classic film, The Wizard of Oz. Prop recycling is a common practice in Hollywood, even today.
FUN FACT: the director of this movie is Vincent Minnelli who was Judy Garland's second husband (whom she married two years after this film was released). Judy Garland played the iconic role of Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, which was the film that the cyclone footage was reused from. Small world after all.
I love how this movie used the tornado from the Wizard Of Oz for this scene, plus that fight was epic.
"I love how these cheapskates* used the tornado blah blah blah..."
The tornado footage was shot originally for Judy Garland's Wizard of Oz and reused here. Beautiful special effects work.
I found out they used the same tornado footage in this movie that they used in the wizard of oz
Maybe the director was the director for the wizard of oz
@@rembrill591 They weren't directed by the same people. Back in the 40s they used scenes from other films for reasons I don't know why. But it was probably to save money. Victor Fleming directed The Wizard of Oz and Cabin in the Sky was directed by Busby Berkeley and Vincente Minnelli.
Ofc it’s so obvious 😂
@@BrendanWelch16 lmao yeah cuz in the 1940’s there was no such thing as CGI
@@WindyBeeStudios yep but they somehow manage to make it look more realistic in the Wizard of Oz and that was a couple years before this
0:30 This is actually such a realistic and breathtaking shot. One because the tornado obviously looks incredibly realistic for its time. And also because the way that she stops, and just stares at it, completely mesmerized. I’ve heard from many people, including my dad who survived the Xenia tornado from 1974, that when you see a tornado in person, it’s nearly impossible for your brain to comprehend something so big, and alive... So you stare.
Wizard of Oz tornado …
@@mjg00008 yeaaaah...?
I saw one when I was 12. I went into complete panic. Very few things have scared me that bad.
That's pretty much exactly what it looks like in all my recurring tornado nightmares! Scary stuff
I studied the Xenia tornado quite a bit a while back, glad to hear he survived one of the most deadly in history.
„Hear my prayer, send down your wrath and destroy this wicked place“!!! *God* „Say no more“ Tornado Pops up instandly
I like how the tornado comes from and resembles the Wizard of Oz tornado I love the Wizard of Oz
Did you know?? That movie's tornado is the same tornado as 1939 the wizard of oz tornado scene. It used again and again since 30's ~ 50's too.
What movies?
Another movie called High Barbaree from 1947 uses it also.
Yep. Also, the video says it at 2:06
Wow...into the '50:s even?! They got some mileage out of that 35 foot sock. Brilliant special effect.
A brawl and a gunfight during a tornado?!
I’ve seen it all
So classic how she stands there looking out at that tornado across the field and her beautiful hair blowing in the wind! What classy and elegant women have graced our American films especially the 30-60’s just beautiful as they come how ironic it is that Judy Garland’s husband was either a producer or a director on this wonderful film and they used the scene from wizard of Oz 4 years previously for this film
Vincente Minnelli was indeed the director. It was his very first movie.
Its not every day you see to idiots fighting in the middle of a tornado lol
The black and white filter of these old movies mixed in with a tornado makes it very scary but so cool
This is the exact same tornado that sent Dorothy to Oz!
0:37 that's the exact same door and field from the wizard of oz,
Red power ranger red Yeah back then that tornado was used a lot
It’s the tornado from The Wizard of Oz.
Yes it is
It was the same tornado sequence used in "The Wizard of Oz!" This along with "High Barbaree!"
Joseph Bonczyk I can almost hear the same sound effect as well.
Methinks we've seen that muslin stocking tornado before...
Yep in The Wizard Of Oz
It's a twister...it's a twister!! Same tornado footage first filmed for 1939 Wizard of Oz.
Wait a minute that twister is from the Wizard of Oz 0:39
Yeah, 100 other people commented the same thing. We know!
You know I think the cabin in the sky and the wizard of oz could be both these films be take place in the same world.
That's the same tornado they used from the wizard of oz😊
arleen123100 Yes, it is. I discovered that in Memories of Oz from TCM on the Wizard of Oz DVD set.
They recycled special effects. To some extent they still do. The shot of Washington D.C. at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark comes from The Hindenburg, made a few years before.
Everyone keep saying it’s footage of the tornado from Wizard of Oz… Isn’t it actually just the same soundstage. Soundstages are reused for other movies quite often. That’s nothing new.
Same rear projection screen footage
Exactly. Btw, great handle name you have. Former Symphony Musician here. Principle Clarinet all these years.
I like how everyone talks about the tornado is the same one from The Wizard of Oz. Another thing that the sound effect in 0:06 was the same sound from The Wizard of Oz where the Wicked Witch of the West poofs in Munchkinland in red smoke.
Why is that the same tornado from the wizard of oz?
Heather Hillery It is the 1940s. Producing movies and sound effects was very expensive still at the time. They had to recycle what ever effects they could. As long as they got permission from the owners.
That tornado acted in other movies as well, but eventually, it blew it and was never again considered for any other movies.
I heard it fell on some dark times afterwards because it couldn't get any work. From there it went to the bottle.
Very commonplace, even now!
0:39 looks exactly like Dorothy’s house lol 😆
For anybody wondering, Hollywood still uses "stock footage" to this very day. Do you think every time they show a character on TV watching a wildlife show that they sent someone to African to film antelopes just for that?
Stock footage and sounds are the most common thing for the studios in Hollywood
0:19 i like this part of the theme
Why do people fight during tornadoes
It’s a Twister! ITS A TWISTER!!
It’s a tornado
Oh my god
This is wizard of Oz 1939 tornado
Same footage as the Wizard of Oz
Ahh yes, the classic EF0-EF3 rope tornado
0:45 fighting during a tornado, thats gotta be bold
It’s the same 🌪️ from the wizard of oz
That was sad 😢😢😢
Does anyone know the name of the background music of this scene it would be nice
So if God sent the same tornado to destroy the nightclub, then that must mean God was responsible for sending Dorothy to Oz. 🤔
If you’ve heard the deleted reprise of over the rainbow from wizard of Oz, Dorothy sings “someday I’ll wake and rub my eyes and in that land beyond the skies you’ll find me”. Could she have been referring to heaven when she said “land beyond the sky’s”, which of course is gods kingdom.
He needed her to kill the Wicked Witch of the East. 🤣🤣🤣
wow I didn't know that
Why gunshots at the middle of a freaking tornado
Well the tornado is the same from wizard of oz
Oh wow! I have a theory that this movie is connected to the Wizard of Oz.
Carter Gonzalez cinematic universe. Same day, different people lol
That’s because they were both from MGM.
its same house front when dorothy was running..its the same twister
0:31 watch that tornado turn fast like that that's really scary
dont think they move like that in real life. But from a film point of view, its terrifying seeing it make really quick snake like movements so they nailed it...
@@boycie18 yep
True
When the tornado turned liked that, it was creepy as heck in my opinion
@@simonborjas76520:31 the tornado was like Ugh I gotta stretch my back
The same tornado in the wizard of oz
Same to you
It is the exact same tornado from the wizard of oz
Tomas Fernandez they used the same footage instead of making another tornado
Dudes nobody likes tornadoes. But hmm maybe twisters are not even real i'm not gonna lie.
They borrowed the tornado from wizard of oz
Dude's shot in the back, but clutches his gut.
Bullets can go through ppls bodies
What film is this? Its NUTS! "Cabin In the SKY." I've never heard of it.
Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong, among many other famous people, are in it. Vincente Minnelli and Busby Berkeley co-directed it. Also credited with the first-ever filmed "moonwalk" dance step that Michael Jackson would make famous decades later.
And it almost looks like from twister
+Cookieboy12 Your right that is look like a Tornado from the wizard of oz
.
Whitehead 2000 because it is the one
That is the same tornado as the wizard of oz
That look like wizard of oz

Elisa Huberman "Hear my prayer"
She was calling to God.
What else, after that?
klassicalmuzik what else after 0:02?
Elisa Huberman from 0:00-0:05 Ethel Waters says "Lord, hear my prayer. Send down your wrath and destroy this wicked place".
klassicalmuzik The was wondering what she said. I could hardly understand through her cries.
I knew that.
