    My wife and I have been to Kauai 11 times in the last 14 years and will be going back again next year. This video is extremely informative. As someone that has been pretty much everywhere on the island, a few things to add:
    One, if you want lots of sunny days on your vacation, stay on the south side of the island. The north shore is quite beautiful, but you will absolutely get rained on more.
    Two, eat lots of local food! Village Snack Shop and bakery in Hanalei has awesome lunch and excellent pie! In Lihue, the best mac nut pancakes in the world and outstanding oxtail soup is in the diner at the Tip Top Motel. In Kapaa, we love Pono Market. In Koloa, the Koloa Fish Market and the walk up window at the Sueoka grocery store are both great.
    Three, make use of the excellent farmers markets that happen pretty much daily somewhere on the island - particularly if you are staying in a house or condo that has a kitchen. The expensive sugar loaf pineapples are worth it. Trust me. We also stock up a bit at Costco in Lihue on the way from the airport to our condo.
    Four, some of the best hikes anywhere in the world are on this island. There are a lot of websites like alltrails that have plenty of info on them. One of my favorites is the Awa'awapuhi Trail.
    Five, consider making a donation at the humane society. They do amazing and tough work on the island. You can also take a dog out for the day - donation required - which is a lot of fun for both you and the dog!
    Six, the coffee plantation is a nice place to visit for an afternoon. They also have ice cream for sale.
    Seven, looks like the Hanapepe Art Night is back in business. This is a fun time along the main street in town (the hanging bridge is in this video) and a chance to see some local art and the stores. The bookstore is particularly great!
    That's all I can think of now, let me know if you have any questions. Kauai is beautiful and the people who live there are lovely and welcoming!

      Thank you for all your tips! Have you ever been there during December or January?

    • @mikev.2945
      @mikev.2945 Рік тому +3

      @@jessicam522 January, yes. December no, but I've been a few times in late November. Our favorite time to visit is late May, FWIW. Sept is also nice after kids are back in school so the condo complex where we like to stay is quieter. Basically, we never go in Summer. :)
      Temp-wise, there's not really too much difference any time of year during the day, though it can be a LITTLE bit cooler at night/early mornings.
      Also, Winter is when you will have the possibility of more storms in the Pacific, so windward side beaches can see higher waves, stronger undercurrents, etc.
      Let me know if I can answer any other questions!

    • @Christine-xs2of
      @Christine-xs2of Рік тому

      Wow thank you so much for the incredible informations. We are going to Kauai in November and choose two hotels so far: sheraton and grand hyatt. Which one you think is in better location for snorkeling and close to main towns?
      Thank you

    • @mikev.2945
      @mikev.2945 Рік тому +4

      @@Christine-xs2of Both are close to Koloa Town proper. The Sheraton is at a better beach for snorkeling for sure. That's the beach where we stay at the condos next door.
      The Hyatt is the better property itself, but the beach can be a little sketchy for swimming every day. If you stay at the Sheraton, get a room in one of the buildings on the south side of the road that the property straddles. You'll enjoy it either way. I highly recommend getting hold of Captain Tara for a day snorkeling trip. They will take you right to some other great spots including time swimming with turtles. The Snorkeling at Lawa'i Beach is good, too. That's over by the Beach House restaurant - which is nice for a sunset dinner, BTW. Boss Frogs over on Poipu Rd is where we get our snorkel gear for the week.
      You can walk from the Sheraton to two small outdoor shopping malls with dining and stuff. Poipu Village Shopping (right across Poipu Rd) and Kukui'ula just a little way to the north west where the first traffic circle is. The Longs there comes in handy. Eating House 1849 is really good for dinner, IMO. There are great food trucks every day in Koloa Town for lunch. And shockingly, the pizza joint there is pretty solid.

    Hi ! Thanks for this! I am mobility scooter bounded and have severe motion sickness so unfortunatelly going on hikes and boats is not possible for me, But now we have more options to try and do next time we are on Kauai. I think it is the most beautiful one of the islands but for me also the most difficult one to do fun things. Thanks again !! ❤

      Mahalo for watching! Glad to hear this video is helpful for your trip planning. Agreed, a lot of beaches are not ADA accessible around the islands. It makes planning tough. Kauai beaches are better than most as the older island doesn't have the coves like Maui or Big Island.

    Really surprised you didn't include local sailing. Or more specifically sailing around the Na-Pali coast.
    And how about some learning for the kids and adults at the Kauai museum so everyone comes away learning about how all the cultures weave on the island and islands.
    Though Kauai has a lot so I can appreciate how there's too much for any short list. But I would have those particularly in my top items.

    #19 12:52 the bridge collapsed in a landslide last I heard when I was there for the holidays visiting my family. One place I'd highly recommend trying out is Pineapple in Paradise. It's a food truck on the island that changes it's spot depending of the day of the week, but it serves some of the best frozen whip I've ever had. I'd urge you to order a Pineapple in Paradise cone, it's like Taiyaki Ice cream, but in my opinion, much better.

We stayed in Princeville and were not aware that it’d take 3+ hours to get to Waimea. Had we known, I would’ve definitely suggested staying in north shore for half of my trip and south shore for the remaining half!

    Awesome video! not sure if it still happens but, in Hanapepe Town there used to be an "Art Night" with food trucks, street performers, and open shops in the evening. Also, Be aware of turtles and seals on the beaches. They are cool to look at but, do not get too close. People have been bitten by unwittingly getting too close to a seal and her pup.

    Great video! Currently here in Wailua by Coconut Marketplace. Beach is walking distance. Clear waters and calm waves. Lydgate was the best one especially for snorkeling. Will be heading to Hanalei tonite to catch the sunset. Hopefully traffic is not bad. Clouds and winds are setting but will try anyway. Great food. Very fresh. And people are just down to earth. Aloha and mahalo!

    We are going with my parent in May 2022 to Kauai and then Oahu later. Do you have any recommendations for things to do for someone with limited mobility/handicap accessible? We are obviously going to do a lot of beach activity and I love that you posted what beaches are easier for children. I'm hoping some of these places we don't have to hike to or at least have a small like less than a mile hike to get to so my dad can still enjoy seeing some of these places.

      We have a list of family friendly beaches here that would help, they don't have a hike to enter. thehawaiivacationguide.com/kid-friendly-beaches-kauai/ Hanalei Lookout, Kilauea lighthouse, the waterfalls we showed, and even all the lookouts in Waimea Canyon are handicap accessible. Enjoy getting around Koloa Town and Hanalei Town as that should be relatively smooth. See our Kauai itinerary for more ideas!

    The Secret Falls hike is another great spot to check out. Can rent a kayak up the Wailua River and is a pretty easy hike to the falls. Enjoyed the video, and don’t think there’s any spot on the island not worth checking out!

      We found the Secret Falls hike to be pretty slippery and may be difficult for less active people. Also, the canoe trip there is easy, but the trip back can be much more difficult (against the current), especially if you have been hiking/sliding on the Secret Falls trail.

    Question: when you refer to the "winter months" what months are you talking about? We will be there late September/ early October and hoping it's not considered winter yet.
    And if you could do only one Holo Holo which one would it be? The 7 hour one including Nihau? I just can't afford more than one

      December, January, and February sees the highest surf but it can also happen in other months so just check before you go out. The high surf comes from the Bering Sea. Sept and Oct are usually good months but still check. The Nihau + Napali cruise includes a lot in an all day tour. We are coming out with a video on it this Saturday. That is my favorite with a sunset cruise being my second. I ask because I am planning to visit Kauai for just one day and I am wondering if it is worth the time or should I focus on other excursions. Thank you for all the time and effort you've put into them. One question. Thanks to your videos, we've learned that winter seas are much rougher than summer seas. What are my chances of getting to learn to snorkel on either island and what spots might offer the best hope of calm enough water? Thank you to you or anyone else in advance.

    I just purchased your vacation guide for Kauai and am working my way through it. I was wondering, is there a reason why you didn't recommend staying in Kapa'a? I stayed in Poipu at the Grand Hyatt before, and it was wonderful. My family is going for 8 nights, and I'm trying to decide if we should split our time between two locations or just rent one place. This time we are traveling with three kids (14,12,11), and I want to stay in a vacation rental for most--if not all--of our trip. I'm just trying to figure out the best logistical and most cost-effective solution.

    • @TheHawaiiVacationGuide
      @TheHawaiiVacationGuide  Рік тому

      Kapa'a has some good value hotels. Erica will be adding them and some vacation rentals to our where to stay section shortly. It is a central location in Kapa'a, especially with bad traffic this year along Kuhio Hwy. You can stay there to do the North Shore but we just find it easier to stay in the North Shore to do stuff up there. It is a good idea to split your time if you want to see more of another part of the island.
