Driver I heard your comment about smoking your brakes while descending the Grapevine on I-5 in southern California. I drove that route for nearly 30 years in tankers that were most always loaded to max. Northbound is the tough one. South bound is more manageable. I smoked a few brakes myself before I learned how to manage speed with gears, jakes and a little brake application. The key, especially north bound, is to set your speed and gears at the top of the grade. Don't allow your speed to wander more than 5 MPH or so above the posted speed of 35. As for stopping to allow overheated brakes to cool, that is not recommended. The best cure for overheated brakes is to continue rolling so they can air cool. Stopping and setting your brakes can cause your drums to warp. Another tip; consider shutting your reefer unit down to fuel the tank if it gets as low as a 1/4 tank. Sometimes the air gets into the pickup line when fuel is agitated.
Before retiring I drove for a large grocery chain in So Ca. I often went to Bakersfield Ca. from Compton Ca to deliver one of our stores there. We went north loaded with groceries ,heavy, and back south with shipping materials being returned , light. We did it with Macks equipped with a 300 Mack engine with a Mack straight 5 spd ,no jake brake You learned real quick how to go down without smoking or worse setting the brakes on fire. The 5 spd was the worst. Going up you went so slow,no choice, that you could almost walk faster. You had to go down pretty slow also. Since we were paid hourly slower just meant more money. Since I retired the company was sold to another very large nationwide grocery co and all those Macks were gone as fast as the new owner could get replacements.
Reefer burns about 1 gallon per hour depending on what run mode is selected....continuous or cycle sentry. I just switched to dry van doubles in my last 10 years....wanted to experience more about trucking before I'm done. I used to unload the reefer trlr. at grocery stores.....loved that job during the warm months. If your reefer tank gets real low, turn it off while fueling....it might get air in the line and stop running suddenly....then you have to manually prime the unit until it restarts. I can't count how many times I've hooked up to a customer's loaded trlr. and the tank was empty or near empty while yard switchers were sitting playing with their phones!
