I got some blood work done for a company checkup. At the review the Dr said “hmm Urea and creatinine is raised”. Yep, I’m eating 175g protein per day, says I. “Any chance you could eat less?” He says. I reply: Nope. Got to get huge. He takes a pause, then says: “fair enough. Drink a bit more water and have at it!”. It’s nice to find a Doctor that understands 😂

For those that are worried about their kidneys, next time on your bloodwork get what is called a cystatin-C test. It is an excellent kidney function test and best of all it is not really affected by training, diet, supplements, or muscle mass and will give you the most accurate estimate of how your kidneys are functioning regardless of other factors.

You can also ask for them to test for microalbumin. It’s an add-on to a standard urinalysis, checking to see if there are small molecular pieces of proteins filtering through your urine, which would be an early sign of kidney dysfunction that would precede any changes in standard blood testing. It’s covered by most insurances, and it’s a fairly common test.

Its worth mentioning she wieght trains 6 days a week and understands what protein means to people like us
She also said creatine would be safe. For the last 3 months I've had my bloodwork checked to see what the combination of creatine and higher protein would do to my kidney. Everything looks good. Kidney function is normal and I feel great. Thanks for the BS videos, there awesome!!!

Hey Mike, love the content you put out there. May I ask you a question you don't typically get..
I'm sure you've heard about Rich Piana's “feeder workouts”. While I definitely don't agree with everything he had to say, I think he does have some good points with this one and tons of people swear it works. What I'm referring to, is hitting a muscle with very light weight (less than 30% of your 1RM) for 50+ reps for a couple of sets once or twice per day, preferably after meals, in order to improve nutrient uptake and speed up recovery. Keeping in mind that only a 10 minute walk after a meal drastically improves insulin sensitivity inside the muscle cells, this could have some legitimate benefits for weak body parts, provided that all other variables like training, nutrition and pharmacology are all in place and you're not overstimulating the muscles so you don't actually impede recovery.
Obviously, there aren't any studies done on this topic, so everything's just theory, but I'd like to know your thoughts.
For someone who's trying to optimize everything he can, it's just hard to believe that the best thing you can do after having a meal is to sit down and do nothing.
Maybe you can make a video about it. I'm sure others are interested as well

Hey, Dr. Mike. In the recent past, I completed a Protein Sparing Modified Fast (I needed to lose 10+ BMI to qualify for a Birmingham Hip Resurfacing - saved my life!) According to my bariatric surgeon, this diet must be supervised by a physician and a nutritionist. At first, he refused to prescribe the PSMF because people can't stay with it, but I convinced him that I was different and totally committed to the process (my hip was KILLING me) I was restricted to 800 calories of lean protein, a day. I could also consume leafy greens and low sugar dressing. I was permitted to use low calorie flavor enhancers. I had to take prescription amounts of potassium, as well as supplements of magnesium, calcium and vitamin D, in addition to drinking at least 64 ounces of electrolyte water daily.
This process induced benign dietary ketosis and I lost 80 pounds in 90 days.
How is this different than the protein consumption you are discussing in this video?

For maximum longevity the research would indicate that it's not just lower protein intakes but actual calorie restriction that is key. The way to live the longest life possible - assuming you don't die from malnutrition or physical trauma - seems to be simply being the skinniest you can be. And I don't mean leanest, I mean skinniest. Low protein, low carbs, low fat, low IGF-1, low mTOR it seems like the research is pointing at all of those in a nutshell if maximum longevity is the goal.

Protein intake is overrated, and I find Stanford professor Chris Gardner’s thumb rule much more compelling: to gain 10kg of pure muscle in one year (about the best case even for a newbie) that is known to be 70% water, you need 3000 grams of amino acids, which is less than 10 grams/day above maintenance, or ~20 additional grams/day if we round it up generously to account for repair of damaged muscle fibers.
I don’t know how to explain RCTs that show small gains in hypertrophy even well beyond ~0.8 grams/day/lb body weight, but those gains are small anyway and probably relevant only to advanced lifters if at all.

About the mTOR I'd say if you don't have enough muscle mass yet, then getting muscle mass and a heathy bulking diet adds more to longevity and health (hormones, better life and mood, and don't forget AMPK activation with training which is another important longevity pathway, and also Sirtuin 1-7 activation with training and certain foods).
After having sufficient muscle mass, a strict intermittent fasting strategy down-regulates mTOR decently, but in order to get the full effect of inactive mTOR occasionally you need to fast for 2-3 days. It's impossible to do for most people, that's why people who want to get both longevity and muscle gain benefits, tend to experiment with fasting-mimicking diets like keto. But being on keto and training requires a unique mindset, lifestyle and training program to follow. Huge calorie intake, mostly fats, max 3x a week resistance training, but the optimal for longevity is 2x which results in a very slow muscle growth or stagnation. Conclusion: an average person probably can't do 'huge gains fast' and longevity together, prioritize one.

Almost no doctors in the US have any nutritional training. Most students of human medicine in the US take no classes in human nutrition at all. Zero, zip, nada. We are always counseled to "talk to your doctor", but, in all seriousness, from the standpoint of acquiring useful nutrition and other lifestyle information, talking to your doctor is not all that different from talking to your cat, except, of course, for the expense. Talking to your cat provides even greater benefit because it's free.
The month I turned 60 (years ago) I wanted a personal fitness challenge, and I decided to do 200 pushups a day for a month. During a checkup I mentioned this to my family physician and he told me not to do it. I was too old. I would ruin my shoulders and elbows. I was almost three weeks into doing those 200 pushups a day with no undesirable affects. His response was just more evidence that, in general, aside from acute conditions, doctors are of little benefit to healthy fit people. Chatting with your doctor about your diet and your activity/exercise/workout regimen is, most often, a waste of time. Nonetheless, we are still constantly told to consult them when changing our diets or beginning an exercise routine.

Got mulitple blood tests done since i started lifitng, and after a while the indicators for kindeyfunctions and health has been pushed to the upper limit, directly correlating with my protein intake. Granted, i was on a harsh cut and 2.1g/kg of total bodyweight (not lean), so I was pushing the envelope a bit, but still nowhere an unreasonable amount. Dialed back my protein intake to 1.6g/kg lean mass, and currently waiting for the next bloodwork results to come in. So I do think high amount of protein, over a long period of time (in my case 6 months) influences the kindneys in a way. Just would stick 2.0g/lean kg as the upper limit for myself from now on. As far as I know, the only way protein affects your kidneys is if it enters your bloodstream as whole protein. In that case, you'll die of acute kidney failure very quickly unless you receive immediate treatment. But the only way that generally happens is with rhabdo or some other injury-induced condition that dumps a bunch of protein into your blood. Dietary protein doesn't enter your bloodstream as whole protein molecules. It gets broken down into sections of 1, 2 or 3 aminos, then absorbed by your intestines. So the molecules are MUCH smaller than the sort that would clog your kidneys. One thing to note--you actually can induce rhabdo by working out too hard, and people have died from it. So it never hurts to be careful, but that said, dietary protein is zero risk to your kidneys.
As far as your liver, from what I've read, even if your bloodstream is full of aminos, your liver will just let them pass right through if it doesn't have immediate capacity to process them, and if they hang around in the blood for too long, your kidneys will just filter them out. So worst case scenario, for a healthy person, is that you'll just pee out a bunch of the protein you ate. So if you eat too much, it might end up going to waste, but it's not going to damage your liver either.

My understanding is that execive low fat protein can be processed into sugar in your liver and can actually spike your insulin levels which can lead to other problems such as sleep disorders. Fatty protein is better for you. This also depends on your age and especially your mobility and exercise habits. If you are a hard core weight lifter than you definitely need a little more protein than the average couch potato. Suger does destroy the kidneys and it also Spikes your insulin which can lead to insulin resistance leaving you with diabetes. Your stomach, liver and kidneys have to break down all of that protein with bile acids that are produced in the pancreas and liver. Even in the healthiest of people these organs can only produce a certain amount of these biles that are needed to break down proteins sugar and starches. The amount of stomach acid you produce also matters, some people do not have enough to fully help in the breaking down process of proteins. The protein that is not broke down in the stomach and liver has to be broken down in the kidneys and this extra protein can clog up the filters in the kidnies. This is what causes kidney damage from excessive protein. It can also cause problems in your lower intestines. Starchy food like potatoes and rice will be converted into sugar in the liver anyway and most will be stored as fat in the body. Sugar is a kidney killer. Protein is an essential food source especially fatty protein such as steak, pork, salmon and even chicken. Chicken is better with the skin on because the skin contains the fat. Dark chicken is better than white chicken because it contains more fat. Not all fats are good though, don't eat highly processed vegetable oils they are poison to the body. Use avocado oil, extra virgin olive oil, real butter not margarine. Even the forbidden lard is better than vegetable. I believe most people need a good helping of protein but it does vary for each individual especially if you already have liver, kidney or gallbladder problems.

My guess is it is not the protein itself that is bad for you but the sodium often applied to the red meat containing the protein.

Kidney biopsies revealed that the bodybuilders had developed a condition called “focal segmental glomerulosclerosis,” a type of scarring within the kidneys. This disease typically occurs when the kidneys are overworked. The kidney damage in the bodybuilders has similarities to that seen in morbidly obese patients, but appears to be even more severe.
Vivette D'Agati, M.D. When the bodybuilders discontinued steroid use, their kidney abnormalities improved, with the exception of one individual with advanced kidney disease who developed end-stage kidney failure requiring dialysis. The single patient who resumed steroid abuse developed a severe clinical relapse.

That said, it's probably not a good idea to go overboard with your protein intake, as any thing in gross excess is generally not good for you.

Very nice escape from the lover problems and proteins:) :
Protein is an essential nutrient for your body, but too much protein can have negative effects on your liver. According to some studies, eating a high amount of animal protein, especially from red meat, may increase the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which is a condition where fat builds up in the liver and impairs its function12. NAFLD can lead to inflammation, scarring, and even liver failure if left untreated. This risk may be higher for older or overweight people3.
However, not all sources of protein are the same. Some studies suggest that vegetable-based proteins, such as soy, beans, nuts, and seeds, may have a protective effect on the liver and reduce the risk of NAFLD1. These plant proteins also contain other beneficial nutrients, such as fiber, antioxidants, and phytochemicals, that may help prevent or reverse liver damage. Additionally, branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), which are found in dairy products, eggs, fish, and poultry, may also help improve liver function and prevent muscle wasting in people with cirrhosis1.
The amount of protein you need depends on your age, weight, activity level, and health status. The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for protein is 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight per day for adults. However, some people may need more or less protein depending on their individual needs. For example, people with liver disease may need more protein to prevent malnutrition and muscle loss1. However, they should also consult with their doctor to determine the best type and amount of protein for their condition.
To summarize, eating too much protein can be bad for your liver if it comes from animal sources that are high in fat and cholesterol, especially red meat. However, eating moderate amounts of protein from plant sources or lean animal sources that are rich in BCAAs may help protect your liver and improve your health. You should always check with your doctor before making any changes to your diet or taking any supplements.

What I was taught at biochemistry is that too much meat increases the risk of gout but that's because of high purine content which is metabolized into uric acid. Might be the cause why people think too much protein is bad if they mix it up, they think too much protein = too much meat, while that does not have to be the case.

For the last 3 years I've been creating kidney stones. My doctor has been saying it's because of my protein intake. I did Keto for 2 years and never had kidney problems, but they wouldn't listen.
Long story short, narrowed it down to Coke Zero of all things. For some reason my kidneys can't break down whatever is in it.

Sometimes when I urinated there was protein left in the toilet even after flushing. But I did a urine test and they didn’t find much protein but I also didn’t consume any protein before doing the urine test.
But I don’t know I think since I am doing more cardio and eating egg based protein instead of whey I don’t see the protein in the toilet after urinating anymore. Maybe it was a different cause.

I do a carnivore diet and I don't look at how much protein I eat but I think around 3% and I have no problems at most it's the fats that lead to problems with eating too much such as diarrhea or floating stools which is why I eat high proteins and medium fats and I'm fine

I recently had my creatinine levels checked and also asked the lab to do a cystatin-C test to be on the safe side. Both results came out negative, which means that I do not have any kidneys and therefore my protein intake is irrelevant. So now I can supplement with 8000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 grams of protein per lbs of bodyweight and enjoy all the health benefits.

I agree I have eaten 5-10 grams per pound of protein(Natural) my entire life while not being overweight . I'm in my 50s weigh 195lbs and I stand 6'. However what should be getting heat isn't protein but what they make it from. For one Soy Protein Isolates are very bad for your liver. Another liver damaging substances is Maltodextrin and is this put in many Protein products. Another problem is consuming too much protein and no fat that is also very bad for your liver and your body.
