- ET Mensah, born 31 May 1919, and died 19 July 1996. The first king of highlife music and one of the greatest trumpet players to come out of Africa. His trumpet playing and technique was impeccable. All his protégé I once knew personally had great tone and control. He was the first in doing a lot musically, including touring West Africa. In May 1956, ET shared same stage with the likes of Louis Armstrong (Satchmo) at Paramount Club, Accra, and subsequently at other venues. For those who don't know, Satchmo is the godfather of pop/jazz music. Yet the highlife rhythms was so captivating to Satchmo and his band that Satchmo will often take the mic and say in his quickly learnt Ga language "ET twaa me beatiɛ" meaning "ET play me that beat!" with Guy Warren (Ghanaba) on drums. These two musical giants became great friends and played together everytime they met. ET Mensah and his Tempos Dance (Big) Band was the greatest to ever do it and they certainly gave highlife music its international recognition. In the 50s and 60s he was at the pinnacle of his music career collaborating with other outstanding artists across Africa.
.
We at Osaberima BigBand want to honor ET Mensah this friday with our own rendition of his all time classic Nkɛbo Baaya. Are you ready to move to the groove? The highlife restoration project is here to stay.
