  • Join the Mid life Crisis Guy as he discovers the site of the largest single explosion of both WW1 & WW2 on his doorstep in Staffordshire. RAF Fauld was the storage depot in a disused mine for thousands of tons of High explosive, shells & bombs. A freak Accident in November 1944 caused an enormous explosion that left a huge bomb crater in the landscape, which turned out to be a fascinating place to visit.

I was a seven year old at school in Hatton on that day, it was morning playtime. There was a distant rumble and I remember that a wave passed across the playground surface. When I went home for lunch, mother told me that a couple of our windows had cracked and that my baby brother had cried continually since the bang. We used to often see italian pow's around - they wore a sort of blue battledress with a large orange/yellow diamond shaped patch on the back - they were very friendly.

Thank you Graham, fascinating to hear people's accounts... I still cannot comprehend just how big that explosion must have been! Thanks for watching & commenting, regards Adam 👍

Once again - welcome to East Staffs*, my hunting ground. You didn't choose the most sparking day to explore our rather pleasant part of the county. What a mizzling grizzler! Finding Tutbury was the first step - after that, Fauld should be signed. I stick to O.S. and the compass. Well tried and tested. My cheap as chips handlebar compass gives me enough general info to get more or less the right direction.
Oh lad - we 'ave some right good mud in E Staffs! Lav-ly! Right path - wrong day!
    That's one big 'ole, fella.
The Boar's Head, Scropton used to be - prob still is - the best carvery for many, many miles.
PS - *I see you're in East Staffs already, in Uttoxeter. I like to think that I had a tiny part to play in getting your Janet Dean into parliament thro' networking her in downtown Burton pubs et al back in '97.
Your 'girls' seem rather pleased to see you.
    Great vid as usual
Best wishes from Paul in BoT

My dad was 14 years old and living in Stoke, Hanley I think. He did briefly mention this explosion, but said very little. I think it was such a horrific shock.

Thank you for watching - it was quite an event, hard to comprehend the magnitude of just how big the explosion really was... All the best Jo - Adam

Great video, I used to live in Hilton not far from there, now live in Nottingham. Went for a dog walk at Fauld crater a few years ago (when I eventually found it). Only walked around to the memorial and back as it was in winter and an absolute bog, but can you actually get around the whole crater in a loop?

Hi Michael - Thanks for comments & for subbing!! Yes using the road I guess you could call it a full loop round. Yes I love history - & to have this on my doorstep, it was absolutely fascinating. But you certainly need the wellies!! Thanks again for comments, great to have you along - looking to head out for some more local history hunts very soon! (Incidentally - a little walk around Cannock Chase opened my eyes when I heard of how it was a huge Army Training camp b4 both wars... Take a look here when you have time! ua-cam.com/video/VmaaaDr_UiU/v-deo.html
