Teta hails from Ampanihi, a village located in the great south region of Madagascar. Born in 1967, he grew up immersed in the fast 6/8 rhythms of the traditional music style called tsapiky. Starting to learn guitar at the age of eight, he soon acquired his nick-name ‘nimble fingers’ and began travelling with his accordion-playing father and guitarist brother who performed at celebrations, ceremonies and ‘bals poussière’ (dances in the dust) throughout the region. He first gained international attention in 2003 when two of his tracks were included in the ‘Tulear Never Sleeps’ compilation album and in the following years he played often with guitar virtuoso D’Gary and jazz pianist Silo before recording two solo albums. His last album ‘Fototse’ (Roots) is halfway between tradition and modern influences. Recorded in Madagscar, partly in studio and partly in the bush, it conveys both the rocking of waves and the imprint of the red Madagascan earth.
