* touches handbrake to park * STOP RIGHT THERE YOU VIOLATED THE LAW
The only thing I've always hated about cops in Driver 1 and 2 (until I played Mafia 1) was the fact that you'd get wanted for minor infractions, but then they'd just keep ramming you, which obviously raised your felony level. It always made me wish I could just stop and pay a fine or whatever, kind of like in Mafia. It would've made stuff like Free Ride a lot more enjoyable back in the day.
The felony system in Mafia was great and clever. I also liked that civilians could get a ticket or be arrested as well for their infractions even if they usually get away their arrestation by paying more money to the corrupted cops. Sometime they escape just to get shot.
Well one of the focus on Driver was the police chases and watching them in the replays with different camera angles, so being able to escape just by paying a fine wouldn't make sence, but i get your point.
@@Weylmes Absolutely. I love the police mechanics in the Mafia games, they were ahead of their time, but I still respect what the Driver games managed to do within the limitations of their time and vision. I always enjoyed Driver 1 and 2 for its simplicity.
At least in Driver 2 you leave the wanted car to a new 1 😂
I think the main point was the cop chases. And to use cheats if you wished the explor.
@@Weylmesi see yout point, imagine just robing a bank, police sees you speeding, stops you, and just gives you a ticket wile you have the whole crew in the car, also how does 4 pepole fit in a 2 seat car
I liked that if you beeped your horn and scared a pedestrian near a cop your felony bar would go up slightly but the cops wouldn't chase you until you do it a second time
Two things I noticed. During 'Survival' cop cars cannot be destroyed. However, if you do a Survival and then go into free roam after, the cops will still be invincible. It does provide for a greater challenge as they normally crash out quite fast.
Second thing I noticed. If you do the story mode, in the appartment there also is an option to enter free drive. However, in this version of free drive, the respawn time between cops is not instant, but it takes about a minute. As a result, at higher felonies there is some breathing room between backup altho they do spawn in groups because of this, which is kinda cool. Also, if you are not being pursued, this also means you can move around the map easier as you only have to worry about cops every now and then instead of all the time.
I didn't know about those informations, thanks for sharing !
Honestly the fact that civilian cars don't collide with walls unless you or a cop hits them is genius. In theory, the cars should only ever hit a wall if they're disturbed by the events of a car chase, so they can make the game way more efficient by only testing collisions for civilian cars once they've been hit by the player or a cop
It's clever and also widespread - many games use simple traffic simulation for distant traffic cars and/or those that didn't directly interact with the environment.
Yes, its clever but the Game is filled with places where the ai just stops thinking and drives in a straigth line into a wall
Awesome video. Even though I've played the game for several years (both the PC and the PS1 version) a situation like the one at 7:18 has NEVER happened to me before. Not even once. Now regarding the cop cars, there are three things that weren't shown:
1)The A.I cop car and the player cop car are NOT EXACTLY the same. For instance, they have different rear lights. I noticed this back in the day because I would mess around a lot using the "film director" option
2)The A.I cop cars (as well as other vehicles) won't produce any engine sounds. However, as soon as they begin chasing you, they will start making engine sounds. I also discovered this thanks to the "film director" (in the PS1 version they make engine sounds all the time)
3)Before they begin the pursuit, if they had their turning lights on, they will remain like that during the pursuit (don't remember this 100%, again I discovered this the same as 1 and 2)
Last observation to point out, this one related to traffic cars from L.A: I think, I THINK, because I don't remember it 100%, but could it be that some cars had their textures "broken"? Cause I kinda remember hitting traffic cars from the front and looking pretty weird, compared to cars from the other cities.
Anyway, very good video! It was very enjoyable 4 me!
Thank you for the comment ! I didn't know about 2) (at least for the cops) and 3). You are right about the Los Angeles "broken" texture, i remember that. I think some car could spawn with messy textures.
About 7:18 you just need to know the right spots. It happens quite often.
Hey Weylmes, in Driver 2, did you know there must have been two versions? Because in one version, your felony meter resets to 0 if you switch cars, but in another version, you will retain some felony even if you get into a new car! Love your vids btw, played Driver 1 & 2 a lot when I was a child.
If they remade this game, I would be in heaven. Have the driving like how it was but add a cockpit mode. Maybe have online capabilities where you could be a cop and try to prevent people passing missions or something or have it its own game mode.
Are you crazy? I get the online Mode but imagine playing yout first time and some crazy experiment player just keeps stopping you and makes It imposible, imagine playing gta 5 history Mode but other players are cops and you need to escape, that whold be chaos
This game was very ahead of its time, can you please make a tutorial on how to download the pc version you're playing?
There's an "archive" on the internet and there you can "borrow" that game.
Or just seatch in google "driver play online" (i found the ps1 version but i dont think that It whold be that hard to find)
This game brings back so much nostalgia, I use too play this all the time aswell as Driver 2 and 3 I also had Driver parallel lines which is my favourite from the series and I really hope we could get a remake similar too how Mafia had the remake
Very cool in depth analysis of this classic game!
*gently taps a civilian car*
*driver series cops* - so i see you have chosen d e a t h
GTA 5 could learn from some of it, especially using blinker and not being obnoxious to share the road with. Instead they intentionally make them collision magnets in GTA Online especially...
Me *breathes out a bit too loudly*
Police send all their cars and helicopters, with National Guard on standby
*_H A N D B R A K E_*
Edit: Oh, so it's technically the same as giving a middle finger?
Technically it is forbidden to make tight steers using handbrake on open roads. It's a move always made with a certain amount of speed by the way, meaning you're doing overspeed also. So they coded it very bassicaly to make cops chase you whenever you press the handbrake button even if it's not for steering.
@@jemlesvideo That's annoying as handbrake itself is a standard instrument in almost any road vehicles to prevent rolling down the hill while stopping.
@@LGLFanTeam12 " Driver " is anyway a car chase game and not a driving simulation game. It could be annoying at San francisco map waiting at a red light being downhill, if you are doing RP, but that's it.
The most proactive police in any game
Good video, I learned a lot about the PC version of the game.
Thanks. :)
Ha !
fun fact, the blinkers work perfectly with 24fps lock. They are tooo fast on 60fps
I remember playing this game with my brother 22 years ago 😅 good old times
I think that's 1 detail that gta missed out on with hubcaps flying off
Pure nostalgia use to play this on pc with gamepad for hours and hours
T-1000's behind the wheel of cop cars.
If you drive on night without headlights the police will start chase you.
Didn't know that, thanks for sharing !
Better AI than Cyberpunk
7:10 I remember finding that bug as a kid, and then spent weeks trying to find every spot on every map where it happened
I was doing the same but only on the San Francisco map. Then i tried to find a way to follow them once they go through the building.
Vehicles aren't programmed to use parking garages. Which is for a great escape. Idk if they changed it in Driver 2. At least then, you can ditch the vehicle and not be wanted.
i really like your video
Thank you. :)
This game.....I had a demo disk with a driver demo and I played it so much it ruined the disk. This game was so good, best handling physics of any driving game of its day and maybe even to this day. True Hollywood car chase, tail happy driving physics. Needs an official remake.
One of the best driving games ever. Love it. Wish sometime I gonna have a remake.
The Driver Syndicate is a good alternative.
I'd like to play an up to date version of this on series x.
nice video, you look like a driver 1 expert, i wanted to ask you something, how can i drive civilian cars? is there any way to drive police car in survival? (I mean like cop chasing)
I wouldn't call myself a Driver expert but rather a fan. :)
Pretty sure mods used to exist if you want to drive civilian cars. Never tried by myself.
Never saw something about driving cops cars in survival tho but it might be possible as well.
make a video comparing Driver 1 to Driver 2, comparing graphics, physics, missions, traffic, pedestrian and police AI, details in general... anyway, I think it would be a very interesting video, there is nothing like it on UA-cam.
I might do something like this in the future but i don't have Driver 2 atm.
Do cops have variations between cities. I somehow remember that NY cop cars looked a bit different or maybe it was just in Playstation version
You made me lauch the game to see and you are right, New York cops have a different front bumper, front lights, plate, a minor change to the rear lights and no text on the top-left rear of the car. This is something i didn't spot for this video, thank you for the information !
Yep, I remember that.
I need this but for the ps1 version
Its too sad they didnt followed it up on ps4 and 5 with bew series
Where can I get the PC version of this game the version you are playing ?
There's an "archive" somewhere ...
(Hello I want to ask you something) ¿Could you do something for me? About The Computer Driver 1 ¿You Have Do The Soundtracks Work? If so, I would be infinitely grateful if you would send me a link where you downloaded the video game or upload it to Mediafire or Mega and hey, if you wanted to make a tutorial, Since the one who would have the music can't be heard
@@Dave_Albright ¿Could you send me a tutorial on how to do it? {Please} Since I would not know if I have to do it with an iso of the console version or the computer version and how to make it work perfectly and do it correctly [I would really appreciate it]
Next. trams? 😅
what an unusual terms on 2:11 that's unfair like hey! it wasn't me! it's that car who hit me!
civilians paid over hundred million dollars to cops to do anything free & that's how the Driver's mechanics does like GTA3 & GTALCS
civilian vehicles are free law because it appears anywhere by magic
Je me demande pourquoi Driver est si populaire en France et pas aux États-Unis
je crois que le suspect se dirige vers l'est, mais je suis pas sur
Driver in French is a lot more fun. T'as plié ta caisse.
I remember waiting at a red light behind a police car, and 2 civilians crashed on each other in the middle of the road, and police went after me... Like... What did I do?
