  • For this step you will need your sewing machine. The preferred stitch is zig-zag (zig on and zag off) with about an 1/8" of an inch stitch length. Stop with the needle in the down position before moving the design.
    Tools that you will need for this step are: an open-toe appliqué, Microtex (Sharp) needles, invisible thread (Sulky or YLI), acrylic extension table
    This is Lesson 4a in Nancy M. Roelfsema's, "Learning To Quilt" curriculum.

    Nancy is a fabulous instructor! I have tried many forms of applique but Nancy's method tops them all! So impressed. I definitely will take her class when she comes back to Michigan. Wish she was at our Novi , MI sewing expo this 11/10/22. Thank you so much!!!

    I've been needle turning my appliques forever. I have detested the machine stitches--it is so ugly to me-- as a result shunned it. THIS! This technique which I've never heard of, has rocked my quilting world. Thank you. I will have to revisit often to fully grasp the awesomeness.

    Nancy, thank you for your excellent series of tutorials. In this machine appliqué series you did not mention what thread you put on the bobbin. Is a regular polyester thread suitable and should the lower tension be adjusted?

      Thank you! I'm so glad you're enjoying them. For the machine appliqué my favorite thread for the bobbin, if I'm using invisible or poly as the top thread, would be a lite weight bobbin thread, 60 to 80 wt., Bottomline from Superior as an example.

      OnPoint Thank you for your quick response. I will have a go at Invisible Machine Appliqué with more confidence of success.

    do I need to do anything special to start and finish the invisible thread stitches? Or will my "end stitch" button provide enough tiny stitches to avoid unraveling

      Hi Dennise, when possible I like to do elements first that will be covered by another element so then you don't have to do a lock on the first elements. For the final elements, or even the first ones if you want, I like a very small streight stitch, like a .5 tiny stitch for about 7 stitches and that is a great knot without adding a bulk of thread. Hope that helps - Nancy

    Dear Nancy, love your work I am a beginner and need to practice a lot. I would like to know if the acrylic table fits all sewing machines? I've been sewing some blocks together and I'm finding the material I've bought just does not seem to go together, I saw your stash WOW you have a lot of fabric, but I guess it's best I practice on the material I've bought on sale before investing in the more expensive fabrics because my cutting of fabrics need more practice, and my piecing together also needs improvement... I'll keep watching your shows, You are a very good teacher. Thanks Brenda

      Hi Brenda, the acrylic tables are specific to your machine. You could contact your local sewing machine dealer to order one for you? Sew Steady is the company that made mine.

    So do you not use the same monofilament thread in the bobbin?

    • @QuiltingWithNancy
      @QuiltingWithNancy  3 роки тому

      No I do not - it is possible but I have heard that it can mess up your bobbins. I generally use the Superior BottomLine thread in the bobbin when doing anything with Invisible in the top - Nancy

    Hi Nancy,does the invisible thread work itself loose or do you fasten off? Also, I'm doing a golliwog quilt,I just love these little dolls. Would the one colour invisible white do for the whole quilt,or should I do black for the black parts and white for coloured dresses ,blouses, trousers etc.

    • @QuiltingWithNancy
      @QuiltingWithNancy  4 роки тому

      HI Peter, they should not come loose, i usually will either use tiny stitches at the beginning or the end of my stitched or be sure i cover the beginning with my end stitches. What is a Golliqog quiolt? It's sounds interesting! The advantage to using the smoke on dark sections is that it won't have the shine that the clear will have when used on dark fabrics - so you decide.

    What is the bobbin thread? Also the sulky?

    • @QuiltingWithNancy
      @QuiltingWithNancy  3 роки тому

      Bottomline by Superior threads is a polyester so I use that in the bobbin when using a polyester in the top.

    I have a pfaff machine what is the number for zig zag stitch and use change tension on top to what

    • @QuiltingWithNancy
      @QuiltingWithNancy  7 років тому

      On my Pfaff, the Creative 4.0, I don't have to change the tension. But if the invisible thread was pulling up the thread from the bobbin, you can try this - first, be sure you are using a very light poly thread, like Superior BottomLine in the bobbin, that makes a really big difference. Then adjust the top thread tension down a point or two until the thread no longer pulls up. If you have to change it too much you might want to take your machine to to sewing machine tech and have him take a look at it.

    I noticed you are using the dual feed option, is this necessary?

    • @QuiltingWithNancy
      @QuiltingWithNancy  4 роки тому

      Hi Margaret - it's no necessary but i find it helps. If you don't have a Pfaff that means you would have to use your walking foot and that isn't an open toe so it makes it hard to see so i would say you will have to go without it - have you ever tried a Pfaff?

    • @margaretkancianic6259
      @margaretkancianic6259 4 роки тому +1

      OnPoint-TV yes, one of my machines is a Pfaff, that's how I knew you were using the dual feed. I usually applique on one of my other machines though. I thoroughly enjoy your videos, your instructions are clear and concise, thank you!

    what kind of thread is in the bobbin

    • @QuiltingWithNancy
      @QuiltingWithNancy  7 років тому +1

      I like a very light weight poly in the bobbin, here I'm using Superior Bottomline.
