  • I hope you enjoy these videos of me working on and playing with or driving my Triumph Spitfire . This was originally bought by me in 2017 after a wait of twenty years - my mum had one one when I was small and I always loved it but I was stopped from owning one myself every time I mentioned it. When I bought it it was a 1973 Triumph Spitfire MKIV 1300 with twin exhausts and Solex ADDHE Carburettors. It was loud and it was fast! After the big ends went I had the engine replaced with all that was available to me at the time, a Triumph 1500 engine so it became by default a 1973 Triumph Spitfire 1500 for all intents and purposes, especially when I swapped out the Solex to fit twin HS4 SU Carburettors. I have repaired, renovated and restored various parts and have resprayed the entire car, polished it and waxed it in between blasting around the local area as a daily driver. I just love it and it brings me great joy.

    Your sweet daughter had the spitfire grin the whole time. I remember that grin so well. You are so right. One has to fiddle with them and maintain them on weekends. No drive it and forget about it as with modern cars, but if approached with the right attitude, that's part of the fun. You can sit on the tire and tinker away. Drives like a go kart with a hundred smiles per gallon. Thank you for the fond memories from the US.

      Thanks George! It's just a constant grin! I've spent the last week putting new seat foams in after the originals crumbled together so even ore smiles expected when she's out again in the spring! Have you checked out the other ones? Please subscribe if you want to see some more as and when I do them!

    That's the reaction I got from my youngest daughter too on our first ride 6 years ago with my 76 1500spit. Was made even more fun when we sat our bullmastiff sideways behind the seats. He looks half the size of the car ! Smiles from everyone who sees that going down the road, and amazement from those who see him get out, lol ! Kids love it !

    Great video - I bought a 1972 MkIV in 1983 when I was 19. Sold it after 3 years and regretted it almost immediately. Subsequently bought an MGB roadster which was faster but which I never liked as much.... This reminds me how much fun I had nearly 40 years ago!

    I think it was 10-11 months ago I first watched this video. You said it right smiles per gallon, your daughter the look of a very happy girl ,and an equally as proud, and happy father. means to me your a good father. our children can be our largest joy and contribution in our world. Its the spitfire vids that got me to subscribe . I have three myself. Like you a 73, and two 79's,Only one 79 on the road right now. I put a gt6 2000cc motor in the other 79 which is exactly what brit. ley. should have done they'd still be in production!!! It still goes like hell but living here in cali I no longer have anyone to help me smog under the table so she's parked last several years. Can't pass the visual. (A little trick to pass any smog but the visual is denatured A) It works like a charm thats why the other 79 is still on the road. Didn't mean to write a novel, but wanted to comment on how much quicker the British spits are over our detuned models here, we don't have the same cam or compression as you. guess I need to put the gt into my 73 as we don't smog below 75 and i'll be good as long as no copper looks under the hood, and even then i'd probably be ok as the gt is pretty much a bolt in and these cops here are as dumb as a bag of rocks. the people with to high an i.q. aren't hired as cops here... They won't blindly follow orders like the rocks will! love your vids keep em come'en ciao, Rob

      Cheers Rob! She's a real pleasure to drive! I have a high compression Toledo engine in her with four branch manifold, twin Solex ADDHE carbs, twin exhausts and God only knows what else the previous owner did! Both girls love it but not as much as me ;-) A friend had a GT6 engine in his but he sold it on a year ago. Can't wait until the weather is better and the refurb are finished in the spring (new seat foams and bunch of odd jobs nothing major!).

    What a great story. In the late 70's I bought a '72 Spitfire when I was in high school. Mine was LHD as I'm in the States. It was my first car and I loved it despite the many issues it had. I left the car behind at home when I went off to college and sadly my brother totaled it. Despite my limited time with that car, I still have great memories of it. When it comes to motoring, in my opinion it doesn't get any better than a small two-seat roadster (with the top down of course). Enjoy!

    • @VirtualGuth
      @VirtualGuth 3 роки тому +1

      @@Codbotherer Yeah, that was a shame, fortunately my brother wasn't hurt. For the past number of years I've been enjoying a Honda S2000. That purchase was of course brought on in part due to my experience with the Spitfire all those years ago. (My history with Honda actually predates my history with Triumph as I started riding Honda motorcycles at the age of 10.) But any way you go, be it a Spitfire or a S2000 (or a MGB or a Miata, etc., etc.), small two-seat roadsters are a blast, providing an experience that is unique in the world of automobiles.

    • @Codbotherer
      @Codbotherer  6 років тому +2

      Hi Patrick! Yeah, both the girls love it - my 'justification' for buying it (for £3k) was that I am too miserly to hire a limo (£0.1k) for her prom next year :-) Everyone will notice her arrive amongst all those white boxes when I blip the throttle a bit!!! My mum had a 1972/3 Spit in baby blue too, back when I was a kid. I always adored it. My mate is after a convertible Mustang but he's mental as parts would be expensive and at $6 a gallon for fuel...quicker for sure but so would be the emptying of the bank account! Last time I was in Florida (April 1994) I left for the airport in an Oldsmobile Cutlass convertible but I've never been in a Mustang so I'll give you a shout if I come again!

      Codbotherer nothing like a little blip if the throttle to let ppl know you're there, my Mustang has aftermarket pipes that you can really hear. I'm looking for an old spit here to work on, hard to find though. The look on my daughter's face was priceless when we hit 120 mph on the hwy with the top down:). Why why why can't we have fun cars like this again. Cars that are all about driving. My mk1 miata is as close to a classic car as you can get these days. This coming from a person who grew up on british and german cars. My family had the gambit of the british stuff. 3 MGAs 1 of which was coupe. 4 MGBs 76, 71, 73.5 and 72 GT. 1 healey 3k mk3. 2 sunbeam alpines 67. A triumph tr4 and a 73 STAAAAAG which was my favorite. Uncles had jags and benzes. So yeah well engorged in the sports car stuff. Your daughter might be happy with a MK1 NA Miata. Not so antique, easy to live with and endlessly reliable. Cheers...good luck with the spitfire. Shame they never put GT6 engine in the Spit.

      A friend of mine did! said it went like stink - Eloise is only 15 though so no driving for a while. Probably start her on the quintissential Mini like I had, the mini, not the milf-mobile they now call mini! Sounds like you had a good selection to grow up around though.

      @redmr2na 6 років тому +1

      Codbotherer OMG I completely agree with you on the "NEW" mini. My god did they completely screw that thing up or what. I worked at a dealership and had the displeasure of taking one of these abominations just up the street to a body shop. The first thing I thought of upon getting in it was.....how the fuck is this a mini!? It doesn't feel English at all. I feel like I'm driving a modern BMW 318 Ti which is probably closer to the truth then BMW is letting on. The Germans screwed up the british icons and chysler screwed up an Italian icon the 500. Leave these icons to history. Only a Mini is a mini. A MINI is something completely different and completely horrible.

    • @Codbotherer
      @Codbotherer  6 років тому

      Mate of mine just got a new style Cooper S. First time I ever went in a new mini, quite excited as I had a couple and drove one to spain a couple of times. Got in and thought I was there for a wash and blow dry. Totally underwhelmed as a passenger, really just a pile of blinging tat. Far prefer my megane estate which is probably not much larger...maybe it would have been a better experience if I drove it, winding it up properly but I didn't feel the need to. It certainly does seem to be vehicle choice of the 40-50yr old divorcee-who-still-thinks-she-has-it (breast enhancement as opposed to my MkIV penis extension?). Nah. Give me an ageing rattle trap with character and quirks any day.
