It's an old folk song that originally came out of Scotland, it was first heard here in the Appalachian mountains and first recorded around 1916. I'm 67 and remember having to learn this for choir.
I believe it was from the 1700"s
Me too! I didn't know it was from 1916. I thought it was much older. I sang it for voice class. Peter and Avi nailed it!
@@taylorvanbuskirk8040 Both are true. 1916 sounds about right for when it was first _recorded,_ as that's close to the first time it realistically _could_ have been recorded, but the song itself is likely much older, and passed down through generations.
"So is Avi a base or a tenor?"
"Yes."
Bass
Actually he’s both.....his range encompasses both tenor and bass
Can we all just agree that Avi, Geoff and Tim are no longer voice types, they're just simply Gods at this point? 😂
He is opera schooled basso proffundo.
@@erikdarman591 I am aware.
Every time I hear Avi sing I'm convinced all over again that he's the best bass EV-ER.
OMG! Avi is a sexy beast with a voice of GOD! I love his voice! I could listen to him all day and never get tired!
Those pedal tones Avi was hitting in the background harmonies give me huge chills every time I listen to this. Thanks for reacting.
It just does not ever get better. Am older but gorgeous video to be sure.
Peter is unusual in that he is an a capella soloist. He achieves some amazing results by layering tracks (sometimes as many as a hundred or more). Two really good examples are "Circle of Life" from The Lion King and "Golem's Song" . I would love to hear your reactions to both of those.
Yay - You did it! I thought you would enjoy Avi's smooth tones, and the harmonies. Who can help but melt when he looks into the camera, with a little smile, and fills your mind ... Ooops, got carried away! This is a very old, Irish folk song, sung by many great singers, including Nina Simone, Joan Baez and Sinead O'Connor.
I HAVENT EVEN PRESSED PLAY YET BUT THIS IS THE REACTION IVE BEEN WAITING FOR AND I KNOW ITS GOING TO BE AMAZING AHHH
They are amazing together.
Yesss finally! I've been recommending this a lot and your reaction was just as I thought it'd be
Their voices in blend are absolutely beautiful!!! No other words needed.
I just love Marco so much. He is the cutest and he sings, that's just not fair!!! 💓💓
I think one of the most impressive part was the (rhythm type) Avi's last note
Oh gosh I’m excited to see your reaction!!
Woooow. Is right. Very reassuring see your reactions to this EPIC Colab. As a woman we are strongly effected... but to see men appreciate the enormous talent of these two men... I've lost my words. Great Job guys. Keep 'em coming.
Avi did a cover of "All About That Bass" by Megan Trainor that is fun :)
I can’t believe I’ve never seen this collab before! 😲 Thanks for the great reaction!
Your reviews are always so great, and I really enjoy them-to the point where I know I can give it a thumbs up even before I watch it. As to whether this is an original song or not, it isn’t. It’s an old folk song that originated in Scotland, and was brought to the U.S. when they moved here. It’s well known in the Appalachian mountains, and even has another tune, written by John Jacob Niles because he didn’t like the traditional one. It has been covered by many artists, including the more jazzy version by Nina Simone referenced in another comment. The words vary a little depending on the singer, but are basically the same. And I absolutely agree-Avi and Peter are terrific here. Thank you for this review.
It’s a song from the American Appalachian Mountains. It’s origin is in the 1700’s or 1800’s Scotland. It was passed down through the generations.
Always enjoy you guys reactions. I've been waiting for this one. It's one of my favorite PTX member's collabs. It seems that no matter who the members' collab with it's always good and gives us so much more to watch from other very talented people. IDK if you've had these requests before but I promise you two will enjoy these videos the first one is of baby Scott and Mitch from high school:
Mitch Grassi 2009
The Wizard of Ahhs by Todrick Hall ft. Pentationix
Have You Ever? - Brandy cover by Matt Bloyd, Mario Jose, and Vincint Cannady
Smoke - Abbey Smith and Luke Levenson cover by Matt Bloyd, and Luke Edgemon
React to "Avi Kaplan vocal range E1 - D5"... The lastest version
AMAZING!
CSF - Clicked so fast wanting to hear and watch this with you. This song is a very old folk song.
Finally!!!!!
Wikipedia: "Black Is the Color (of My True Love's Hair)" (Roud 3103) is a traditional folk song first known in the USA in the Appalachian Mountains but originating from Scotland, as attributed to the reference to the Clyde in the song's lyrics. The musicologist Alan Lomax supported this Scottish origin, saying that the song was an American "re-make of British materials."[
More Peter hollens! He is WONDERFUUUULLLL
this is what I found on Black is the Color: is a traditional folk song first known in the USA in the Appalachian Mountains but originating from Scotland. The first person I could find that recorded it in U.S. is Berle Ives in 1944. No video, of course, available...just audio. Many have recorded this song.
❤Avi❤
Avi has one of the most amazing voices. How about "He Ain't Heavy, H's My Brother".
I'm still waiting for my Harry Styles reaction videos, his live shows were amazing, his covers of Girl Crush and The Chain are the best I've ever heard. Even his original song are great, especially Sign of the Times. I think you both will like them. Then again I could be wrong, but please give him a shot. I think he's great. Love you both, thank you.
Peter Hollens was on season 2 of The Sing-Off (the season before Pentatonix), along with his old college a cappella group, On The Rocks. He has a ton of great music covers to react to but some of his best feature video game music (e.g. Skyrim with Lindsey Stirling), music from The Lord of the Rings and collaborations with his wife Evynne Hollens. Take your pick. You can't really go wrong.
I think you might like Peter and Tim Faust singing Sound of Silence.
I love your grins at the end as Avi hits that G1
G#1
The song is over 100 years old!
Peter Hollens and Home Free- Amazing Grace!!! Please! 🙌🏻
This is a beautiful one and everyone gets their solo part.

I'm so happy you like this!!! Please react to Superfruit "Freestyle Rap Challenge" it's funny!! I love you guys!! 💓
Peter and Scott Hoying Turn up The Music
Avi leaves me dead everytime he sings D: just wtf D: HOW D:
Suggestions: Superfruit Empire medley, Anti medley, Evolution of Lady Gaga, any Superfruit's musical works actually. There's a ton to cover. :) Also PTX Somebody that I used to know, Happy, No, Papaoutai, Ride.. Again lots to cover still. I look forward to it all. :D Have a lovely day you two
Black is the Colour of My True Love's Hair. This song is a Traditional. This is a traditional song and therefore has no particular artist associated with it. It is believed to have originated in Scotland. Nina Simone did it in the 50's, but, it has a much longer tradition.
Yes, I have been waiting for this one. Now you need to watch Avi and his overtone singing. Here is a link. ua-cam.com/video/MmIJC65VWYk/v-deo.html
The song was written in 1959, by Nina Simone
Sorry, incorrect she covered a 17th century Scottish ballad used to be sung in castles etc. It came to the USA through the Appalachian Mountain people who had a lot of Scottish settlers.
Guys do change on the rise by Avi Kaplen. Omg!!!!!
Peter Hollens - Skyrim theme is my favorite song by him. Definitely worth checking out!

Please react to Peter Hollens ft. Home Free; Amazing Grace.
It is amazing! And the harmony is beautiful. You can also hear Rob singing and Austin hitting high notes!
Peter did a collab with Scott singing "Turn Up The Music" by Chris Brown!
Please react to Pentatonix’s Away In A Manger! It’s without Avi, though. It’s for their new Christmas album, A Very Pentatonix Christmas. 💚
