Yue’s folk song is an ancient Chinese song of the Wuyue’s people, which was published in the collection of miscellaneous novels 说苑 (Saying Yuan) by Liu Xiang in the Western Han Dynasty (B.C. 206- A.D. 25). It is said that the Yue’s folk song was the first translated lyric in China. Here is the story of Yue’s folk song. This song was sung by the oarsman of the Yue (no gender is specified) during a trip on the fair boat of Zixi (Anobility of Chu during 403-221 B.C.). Zixi asked his friend to translate the song into the Chu’s language, because he could not understand it. After listening to the translated song, Zixi was happy and embraced the oarsman, holding up his embroidered robe and covering the oarsman with it. Chenyu Sun arranged Qing Liu’s contemporary interpretation of Yue’s folk song into a SATB choral piece in 2021 and then arranged it into a SSA version.

    Tonight, what a night,
Down the stream I tug my boat.
    Today, what a day,
With a prince I share my boat.
With shyness I am by your kindness charmed,
For you cared for neither shame nor slander.
    Ever restless grows my heart,
For I have known my prince.
    Trees grow in mountains and branches grow on trees;
My heart adores thee yet thou knows not my heart.
