Some of these Gunsmoke episodes put me in mind of my great-great-great-great grandmother (give or take a couple of greats). Her husband died and a neighbor decided he could therefore claim her as his. He drove onto her place and ordered her into his wagon or buggy, whatever, and she went into the house to get a bundle of clothes. She came out concealing a pistol and shot him through the bundle. The sheriff investigated and told her something to the effect of "I believe we'll just bury him and say no more about it." Anyhow that's the way I heard it.
It's been stated in numerous episodes that a woman guilty of murder need not fear being hanged. And her husband was regarded so low by the community that it would have been hard to find a jury who would have convicted her, especially if they had been informed that her husband had beaten her "hundreds of times" throughout their 27 year marriage.
Doing repeated injury to his wife, violating a sacred trust in the process, and taking advantage of her illiteracy--he HAD to have known on some level that he was committing false prophesy by claiming to have been given carte blanche with her!
