Yelena Shushunova [1969-2018] (vs. Silivas back-to-back perfect 10s @ '88 Olympic Games)

  • *2024 edit: I have stopped watching gymn since 2015: just a f@rce! Long live classical gymnastics!
    I downloaded the two main clips from Alexsas Trotter in '04, who literally gave his life up to the sport in 2005. RIP Aleksas.
    In memory of Elena Shushunova (Елена Шушунова) [Apr 23 1969 - Aug 16 2018]
    Notice the amount of dance elements in both routines, though totally different in choreography & personality.They actually draw the audience in much more than most of the floor routines these days.
    These were also significant historically because the first was the 99th perfect 10.000 in Olympic history while the second was the 100th 10.000!

      Kasia O yes you can it's called a thomas, and is a staple on floor to not take a step deduction. Todays gymnastics is WAY harder than 1988, for instance, if her punchfront connection pass was competed today it would be a stepout, into the next move, you pause as long as both of them did on their two connected passes you would lose the bonus. However, the dance is way better, but that's because in 1988 they still had carryover from the archaic way gymnastics was for women in the 20, 30, and 40's.

    It was a 1988 summer evening and me and my mother ( may she rest in peace) were watching gymnastics, Elena needed a perfect score to win the competition.
    I will never forget the look on her face, the sublime concentration before she stepped on the floor.
    The rest is well known, she had a 10.
    That moment, that particular moment is worth more than 10 lives!!
    I had a picture of her on my desk for a couple of years, picture, cut ot of newspaper and framed with home made frame ( good old 80s when most of things were made of glass, metal and wood)
    RIP ELENA,

    This was such a gorgeous era of gymnastics, even the more "athletic" gymnast had an a attention to detail, and the "pixie" had such an incredible dance sensibility with her rhythm and timing. What was so wonderful is they both performed like they really wanted to win. If only gymnastics were still like this!

    Wanna know how old I am? I was a teenager when the Seoul Olympics were happening.
    My biggest memories of Elena was watching the Seoul all-around: Silivas vs. Shushunova. LIVE! On the beam: when I saw Shushunova do her Rulfova, I asked what the heck was that? Mind you I didn't know much about gymnastics back then. When I saw her floor routine, I thought the Thomas tumble was crazy and her music was boring compared to Silivas. I didn't know at the time Shushunova was showing a mature flair to her floor work.
    However the biggest memory was the vault. Throughout the competition, I didn't see Shushunova smile at all. In fact I was telling my mother that the 'day of the smilers was gone.' Possibly because how I remembered Mary Lou always smiled. Sure Silivas smiled, but not as much. Anyways when Shushunova stuck her vault, that's when her smile came out. You can tell the pride in her face. She said it right there I did it!

      Given the scoring at the time very unlikely. With the lax scoring of the time both would have gotten a 10 for sure for those routines.

      No. They both would have received a 10 regardless of order.

      They were both flawless, and Silivas could not beat Shushunova on the vault. Shush needed a 10 and got one....RIP Yelena.

    Recommended reading for everyone on this thread, esp. those who bemoan the lack of artistry in today's routines: Dvora Meyers' The End of the Perfect Ten. Note that I'm not defending the current trends in artistic gymnastics towards more power and difficulty at the expense of presentation...it does seem formally possible to have an open-ended scoring system, to have gymnasts pushing the limits of difficulty, AND to keep more artistry in the sport than we're currently seeing. But anyone who watches these beautiful vintage routines needs to realize that the Seoul Olympics were a classic example of the shortcomings of the 10-based scoring system. The judges were throwing 10s around at this competition like they were nothing special, and doing so for routines that clearly had flaws that even amateurs could spot.

    I was 14 in 1988 and doing competitive gymnastics and this was huge for me then! Edge of your seat stuff watching the competition play out! I always favoured Silivas for her elegance and flexibility but was hugely inspired by Shushunova and her amazing moves (the full twisting Korbut on the beam was great! So sad to hear that she passed away 😔

    I love watching these two young ladies' FX. It's hard for me to say that one or the other deserved the gold more, although I do have a slight preference towards Daniela, but I LOVED Elena's second pass with the Arabian somersault, a move I believe is banned in women's gymnastics today.
    I would've made them co-champions😊😊😊😊😊😊

    If I had to pick my team it would be; Shusunova, Gina Gogean, Shannon Miller, Lavinia Milosevic and Svetlana Khorkhina. They to me were the top 5. Silivas and Korbut were right behind them.

      piwid81 Silivas ate her alive! Too bad it was not her becausr she was the better gymnast on three out of four apparatus!

    • @shushunovafan4301
      @shushunovafan4301 7 років тому +8

      Clearly Silivas did not eat her alive. She was better on 1 of the 4 events. She bobbled all over on beam, has lest difficulty and power on floor and vaulting isn't even close (like at all). Even her bars were easier than Shushu but she has a nicer line sand stuck the dismount so she wins that event.

    • @vanesacamara6609
      @vanesacamara6609 7 років тому

      Lebronze thats why i said it was nit her day but usually she would murder Shushu on beam and bars! Shushu beats her on vault and tumvling on floor but back then dancing still counted and Silivas could dance her into the floor! Thats why i say 3 out of floor but agreed it was Shushunovas day. Just like vault is Bogi a better vaulter than Shushu? No way but it wadbt Shushus day thats how it goes!

    • @shushunovafan4301
      @shushunovafan4301 7 років тому +10

      Rubbish, Yelena was amazing on bars and was still good on beam, good enough to medal. The only murder that takes place vs these two is when Shushunovas vault stomps Silivas' into the dust.
      As for artistry, Shushunova is exceptionally artistic. Not as accessible or balletic as Silivas but has perfect carriage, fabulous musical interpretation and timing. The only difference was that she lacked the line, which is biology, and not detuctable. Shushunova regularly spanked Silivas in aa comps actually. Out of the several times they faced eachother Silivas has won ONE time, and that was when Shushunova was in the worst shape I've ever seen her and fell off bars (even the commentators were remarking about how she looked out of shape, 87 Euros). In conclusion, it is in fact Shushunova that regularly defeated Silivas, and still only lost to her when she made large errors, rendering your point null and void.
