As much as Gordon Brown decries austerity nowadays, he essentially promised the same thing in the lead up to the 2010 election and all the experts agreed that it was necessary.

@@DuppyBoii187 I’m not saying he was wrong to promise austerity, I am saying that blaming the Conservatives for it is misguided and Brown is hypocritical when he references it in his attacks on the Tories.

    (1) This isn’t true. You very much can build a forecast that accounts for this dynamic. There is an entire field of science whose entire purpose is studying these types of dynamics.
    (2) And we know that you can keep this carbon tax going for an insanely long time. Maybe not literally forever, but cigarette taxes show this “it is bad and taxed so people will eventually stop buying cigs” argument that LB is using is not true. The behaviors that underly such a carbon tax aren’t going anywhere anytime soon unless we use a carbon tax rate that makes the tax effectively a cap

'Can't make predictions on it' is a pretty silly claim, I agree, but carbon taxes and 'sin taxes' on habit-forming vices like cigarettes are pretty disanalogous. Energy producers deciding what forms of generation to invest in and industrial producers deciding whether to install carbon scrubbers or invest in less CO2 intensive alternative processes respond much more strongly and predictably to economic incentives than people with nicotine addictions.

That’s not inconsistent with what I said

@@666lumberjack both of your are right, it is fairly straightforward to model future revenue for a carbon tax. The aim is to model in the assumption that the revenue will reduce over time.
The carbon tax itself isn’t designed to wean people off carbon intensive energy sources, much like a ‘sin tax’ but like a sin tax, the revenue generated is usually allocated to mitigatory measures or to funnel towards investments in new tech.
LB is very much talking out of this ass here. Is a carbon tax the most effective measure on its own? No, but it is an effective tool if used in context with a suite of policy reform and investment in the renewable energy sector.

    • @billclockwell

If this were a normal election it wouldn't be the best strategy but with this election Labour are projected to win a 200 seat majority, there's literally no better time to vote further left parties, especially when keir has watered his platform down to being almost independent to the Tories apart from promising to build 300 000 Houses annually by removing "Red Tape" which wouldn't look out of place in Reforms nonsense contract

@@billclockwell how is planning reform got anything to do with the Reform party? it's literally how the rest of Europe does things. the UK is unique in allowing local governments to examine each planning proposal on a case-by-case basis, which gives NIMBYs paralysing powers over growth. a big part of labour's plans to build more shit is devolution. this is nothing like Reform UK's manifesto, utter nonsense mate
