When I saw that blue hair, I immediately assumed Keenan was gonna call the berimbolo a micro aggression

I hear people calling it the Vader choke to avoid the triggering. Although I can see why women might not wanna get “rape choked”. This is less of a "berimbolo sucks" essay and more of a "here's how to shutdown the berimbolo" instructional. So I don't think you accomplished what was meant by the title, but these are great tips I will incorporate!
I don't think its valid to say a position doesn't work just because
there's a defense for it. Almost every position has a defense.

I think what he's saying is that the counter is SOO easy and doesn't take quickness or speed that's why it berimbola doesn't work. Like a sprawl needs to be timed correctly, and many defenses requires multiple techniques, but to counter the berimbola you basically only have to sit down and you practically countered the entire position

The last bit resonated with me, I'm constantly giving up position while passing guard standing just because of drilling/training habits and because I'm confident in my own guard if I get swept. But I should be entering without the need to immediately strip off the grips and hooks I allowed to get through.

@Tommy Hass I guess the point that you are not getting, and which Keenan so flippantly passes over, is that every technique is defensible, single attacks especially so. An attacker that is fixated only on the berimbolo will most likely get shut down. But when you combine a berimbolo with other threats, off balancing your opponent and forcing them to defend between two or more things, then the berimbolo is not easily defensible.

Every position can be defended. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t work. As a black belt the basic knowledge of timing, action and reaction should be very clear. Thats BJJ, anything, crazy or not, can work on the right time, with the right action and the expected reaction. Not cool to go online trying to say that a technique sucks, instead of showing how it can work and be defended. But y’all definitely should start using the “worm guard” lol
I train at AOJ and have for the last 5 years. Myself and many others at AOJ will disagree with you, oh and both Mendes Brothers would disagree with you. It works!!!!

Of course there are defense to it just like stepping over the foot in worm guard. But it has worked to much to say it doesn't work. My Professor Samuel Braga is still winning Master worlds using it and everyone knows it is coming. His Berimbolo 2.0 has addressed a lot of the common defenses as well. I like all your stuff brother worm,squid,etc. But I will continue reaping the spoils of the berimbolo 🤙

I have been trying to get into a place in my life where I can go back to bjj. It has been slightly more than a year since my last class and I remember berimbolo’s being huge and everyone was trying to figure out ways to beat it.
So running your hips away stops the berimbolo, I feel like if you are standing and just keep disengaging at the right time most open guard techniques are shut down... Berimbolo I'm sure is not great BUT if it is the right technique at the right time then it's the right technique... gogoplata isn't great either but I have tapped people with it... tools for the toolbox imo

I mean this is just silly, you can do a video about any technique in jiu jitsu showing its defences and counters and say they dont work. If it doesnt work how come its still being used? the way you set up your moves is what makes them work, Miyao still hits that berimbolo entry, not as frequently of course. But as any technique, counters get developed, and then counters for those counters. If you only rely on berimbolo of course you will get shut down easily, that just means your guard offense is poor. Again, this just silly, a silly way to promote worm guard, which DOESN'T WORK LOL!

@@fusilism Yes, he played double pull with every miyao, once both got disqualified for doin it a whole match. Its not like he stood on Paulo or Joao's guard and neutrailze all their sweeps and bolo attempts.
@@Timhttrsn Well yes, when you pass guard you have to stop the guarder sweep or submission attempts with proper posture and grip fighting, thats what its about. It still doesnt mean the berimbolo is ineffective

Rafael Mendes said the scramble to a better position like taking the back is the berimbo. Not necessarily the short dela riva. Once u bump em over and scramble in anyway(leg drag, crab ride etc) to get get the back. That's the berimbolo. At least that's what I remember rafa saying.
so what you're saying is, that it doesn't work in one particular situation because you know a defense (that may or my not, depending on the opponent) put you at risk for a knee bar..

Couldn’t you say the same thing about x-gaurd? All you have to do is grab the ankle above the hook and put it on the mat and there’s no x-gaurd.
