Thank you, this helped so much. It's been a tough couple of years trying to keep up with adding in Google Tag Manager, switching from Universal Analytics to GA4, Google Ads UI changes, Shopify checkout.liquid to customer event pixel, new cookie enforcement and privacy laws effecting browsers and devices. And merging mobile app analytics on top of all that. Been in the tech space for 30 years and have never seen this much chaos all at once regarding tracking.
After the above explanation and practice, let me answer common questions for you. In addition to deleting the GTM code in Checkout and theme.liquid, we need to disconnect Google Analytics in Google and UA-cam applications, because Google and UA-cam applications actually integrate the corresponding code, and these codes do not use conditional logic to prevent repeated loading, so you only need to add a custom pixel code once in the customer event to achieve global loading.
Same question, do we need to remove Google & UA-cam app from Shopify where we have configured GA4 from there? Because although this integration track basic events, we want to track more events like 'view_list_item' on collection pages, and more.
Benjamin - thanks so much for these inputs. very useful indeed and extremely simple. one question though: can you please elaborate on why do we need this custom code when there is a native integration available between google and shopify?
Thanks for this. I'm changing my site to use these pixels from your previous implementation using additional scripts. In addition to removing things from additional scripts, is there anything else I'll need to change if I followed your previous GTM-GA4 guide? Thanks!
So, do we need to delete all the code that we installed for analytics, ad manager and Tag manager from theme.liquid? Can we do this custom pixel AND keep the Google and youtube channel?
Hi Benjamin, thank you for all the tutorials you've been sharing on UA-cam. On our side we can't make this work. Could your script not work in a Shopify Plus store?
It doesn't work for me either. In the real-time report, I see the events being reported, but in the Google Tag Manager preview, it says that the GTM was not found. In this case, can I upload the GTM separately, and will that not cause duplication? And it matters that I am in Europe, and in the placement of the script on the permission, I have set 'not required?
Benjamin! Many thanks for your work! There is only one thing, on my data stream of my google tag, appears an error that says that the quality of my tag require attention. The issue is that apparently some of my pages are not tagged. How can I solve this problem? Many thanks
Hi i have pixel configured in Shopify accordingly to files, changed GTM id. In "Pixel Helper on Shopify" there is event and everything works fine. But in Preview mode in GTM dataLayer is not showing. What could be wrong?
Thanks Benjamin - I was wondering if you were adding the container to an existing one with a Google Tag already set up, does the trigger 'Shopify page view' replace 'initialisation - all pages'? So it's effectively the same thing but with cleaner urls? Thank you!
After some testing and review, it seems that even if a 3rd party CMP is used, such as CookieBot. We found that even before consent was given, a Cookie was getting set by GA (which isn't okay in a GDPR region). We tried various tests and eventually found that the issue was resolved when we set the pixel to 'requires permissions'. This might be a bug from Shopify, but worth looking into.
Thank you this is a very useful tutorial. I have a question: why is the Google Analytics tag in the Tag Assistant Legacy extension is showing this error: "Invalid or missing web property ID"?
