Isn't the point of the expert to guarantee the deal is solid for the buyer rather than the seller? For all we know, the seller could know more than the expert, but that doesn't mean the buyer doesn't want to verify the seller's claims. Not saying that's necessarily what's happening here, but you shouldn't rule it out.
I love how when the seller said "It's worth a lot more." the so called "expert" instantly backs down on his claims and goes on the defensive and says something along the lines "It could be a lot more." for an expert to give an opinion he seems really unsure about it's price, not that historians are even trained in selling weapons..
I have the feeling the experts often tend to price items more conservatively if they are advising the buyer, not the seller. That does not need to be trying to lowball the seller. You need to consider that they are advising a person who wants to resell the item and not collect it. Their job is to make shure that the buyer will be able to resell the item in a reasonable time and make a reasonable profit on it. If they evaluate an item too optimistically, the buyer will end up paying more for it and has a much higher chance to sit on it for a while in order to make a good profit of it, or will be required to sell it for a tiny profit to get a quick sale. And since the experts usually get paid for an evaluation, they want their customer to be happy with their advise or they will not get called in again. I know, it's a TV show, but this is also how it works in the real world.
Why the fuck would you take something so rare and valuable to a pawn shop? Unless you've got a serious heroin addiction, there is no reason to pawn anything off.
that gentleman with the sword has been appraised many times by Craig and being the professional he is, quotes a correct/accurate price based on the market for said items. EVERYTIME he is quoted he says "that is way too low!" Craig is an expert and has such vast knowledge. I would not even begin to negotiate with that man when he consistently wants the price that he sets no matter what the upraisers say.
"Uhhhh....I'll give you a half-eaten sandwich from Subway, a $2 scratch ticket and a coupon good for one free DQ blizzard......WITH the purchase of another blizzard of equal or lesser value."
This sword was used primarily by German mercenaries who wanted to cut the heads of pikes off which were very popular during the late medieval and early modern period.
Yup, even Spain which had the best land armies of the era, the vaunted "tercios" usted German mercenaries, those were undisciplined, troublesome and no very reliable but absolutely fearless and quite efective when used properly, and yes, many of them favored oversized swords and dressed on very colorful clotthing, they dared the enemy to attack them, crazy mofos.
That is a "Flamberge" or "Bidenhänder", used by Landsknechte, who were named "Doppelsöldner", double Soldiers, who fought in the 30-Year War in first Front - they got the double payment. In Germany, Originals are available from 4000,- Euro to 8000,-
I am guessing that the "AF" on the blade stands for "Andrea Ferrara" which was a trademark of sorts used by some of the swordsmiths of Solingen Germany. You see variations of that name a lot on Scottish basket-hilted broadswords, since many of the blades for those were made on Solingen. They used an Italian sounding name because Italian swords were considered to be better quality, and thus they could charge more for them. What would be interesting is if there actually was a swordsmith with that name, and that is his actual makers mark!
M.E. YA4P You can't damage its a sword just from touching it. The thing is from the 1600s do you really it would of lasted all these hundreds of years???
You know nothing about swords... only way to last 400 years is to be incredibly well kept, oiled once a month and never touched with bare hands unless oiled afterwards... If they are so casual, I can only conclude the blade is bad ass but a FAKE non the less.
Exactly, all exposed steel will want to rust. Touching any exposed steel, such as your blade, with your bare hands will leave oils and salts that will eat their way into your blade and eventually leave pits. Wooden handles can be treated with a light coating of lemon oil or tung oil to help prevent cracking. Blades must be protected from moisture at all times
when you go to a pawn shop you should know that the shop is only gonna give you max 50 to 60% of what they might be able to get for it. This guy needs to revamp his expectations.
"Yes I have this club that Cane used to beat Abel with. It dates back to roughly 2000BC. I would like $800,600 for it." "Yeah...let me call in a friend of mine. He was there to witness the beating, so he'll be able to tell us if it's legit"
Average GERMAN made two handed swords were no wheres near 15 pounds in weight, that's fucking ridiculous. A real two handed zweihander would way no more than 6 pounds at the most, high quality ones made by excellent weapon smiths would typically be in the range of 3-4 pounds with a longsword being 2.4-3.4 pounds.
eh I say 6-9 pounds because there are some real big ones 6ft long or a bit longer, and tbh 8 lbs sword that is very long and well balanced isn't all that heavy
I am thinking given how late this sword was made, and how wide the blade is and how thick the blade is, it is most likely a very well made, solid "bearing sword" to be carried in a parade or simply kept as a decoration. The guy who said it was used in battle is probably wrong. I don't think a lot of swords we have left with us today were used in battle. I am not saying it should be broken or look like shit, but you should see some tell tale signs of use. Dents on the side rings of the guard, knicks in the edge, scrapes along the flat of the blade near the hand. Gorgeous sword, properly made in Solingen, probably use-ABLE but used in battle? Doubt it. And "lopping off poleaxe heads" oh please.
Sparrowhawk You're right in the fact this sword most likely never saw combat since matchlock muskets/arquebus and pikes were the order of the day in early 17th century Europe. However I would mention that you can still get swords that have been to war but those will be cavalry sabres and officers swords both of which were used right up to WW1
Rozzok something weighing that light would be trash and easy to destroy honestly. Considering a good sword for me is 4 inches thick with a weight of 25-35 pounds so it can pack a heavy and deadly blow to kill enemies. But you know I guess for back then light was relevant and ok...
This is what we like to call, the deluded customer.. they think their stuff is far more expensive then it really is.. Craig, you need your own History Channel Series, I'd love to watch that..
You must understand both sided in this: For seller, price is "what is possible that sword will sell for" For Craig and Pawn shop crew price is "what I can guarantee sword will sell in reasonable time"
This is such bullshit. Firstly, this is a Zweihander, not even close to a broadsword. Second, it wasn't used against cavalry, only against Pike formations. It should weigh around 8 pounds, not 14. Does he know anything about these weapons?
+Sam Brentwood They are wrong quite often. This guy was wrong in almost everything he said. From saying those swords were used in the frontlines of battles, to saying they would cut heads and legs like it was nothing, he was wrong in everything.
+Lino Silva Well, he's not entirely wrong. It _was_ on occasion used on the front lines of battles- there are contemporary sketches from the Renaissance period depicting this particular usage of the weapon, such as at the Battle of Kappel in 1548, and accounts of mercenary companies with entire armies of multiple thousands of men wielding the weapons (if those thousands weren't used on the front lines, I'd be happy to know what purpose they served, considering swords are useless at long distance). There were multiple other roles for the sword that he doesn't touch on at all, however, thereby misrepresenting it. Halfswording, for one, which was exactly what you did with it after you were finished displacing pole weapons to close distance. That it could cut heads and legs off like melting through a stick of margarine, of course, is amusing and wrong, as was his remark about "the cavalry" patiently stationed behind the Doppelsöldner, which I don't recall ever seeing or reading in any historical texts.
It's good he said zweihander as I thought they would just say 2 handed sword to simplify the show but there are different types of two handed swords. Zweihander, longsword, greatsword, katana. A zweihander is like a greatsword but shorter
I wonder if somebody would walk into the shop and tell Rick that they have a genuine Ulfberht Viking sword. It's one of the most legendary swords in history. It's a thin bladed weapon that was very flexible but very strong and would not break
Honesty, Just because it's old doesn't mean it is expensive, or worth a lot of money. The market needs to be just right to be sold at a high price. If you sold it to, like he said, a weapon's collector, or auction house with the right crowd then yes it can be worth a lot more. Value and worth within collection and auction house is really different then selling it to the masses. Its just a different market. The owner of that sword, shouldn't have treat the expert with that type of attitude. he should know that having swords such as that is different and depends on who he sells it too or what type of crowd.
that guy brings in hella cool weapons and I totally get that Craig is being fair while at the same time the guy is right about it being worth more... its just Craig prices things to sell in a Pawn Shop when the angry dude really really should be selling them basically anywhere else.
Well from all the museum pieces I have seen it is more like 4-10 lbs with 10+ swords being mostly ceremonial. Also these swords historically were never called broadswords. Alas I have yet to see a source to mention it. Also about the expectations of performance in combat, Craig you put the damage being able to be done by such sword too high. Cutting even a man in half is a near impossible feat (in combat that is and don't forget that they often wear steel armour which isn't going to be cut by anything really), the wood used for polearm shafts is very resilient as well.
Nice sword. Looks like it's been refurbished. The Pummel is pretty shinny and hmmm that old of a sword The leather is amazing condition But still a really nice Two handed sword !!!!!!!!
Customer: do you have change for a dollar?

It depends where your at or the time your in on what it's worth. Some days are expensive, others are cheap

0:34 he pronounces "Zweihänder" perfectly
he speaks pretty good German, usually.
@@HandOfMe , his name even looks German. If this was the anime / manga Bleach, the sword would have spoken to him.
the seller looked like the guy at the store who picks a fight with his wife...
then gives her a back hand at home after she didn't put just the right amount of mayo on his sandwich
"It's worth a lot more" oh I forgot an expert had to come in because you know nothing about your own item

invalid name he said it could be because when it's sold at auction people set the price. If two people really want it then they can go as high as 30k.
I have the feeling the experts often tend to price items more conservatively if they are advising the buyer, not the seller.
That does not need to be trying to lowball the seller. You need to consider that they are advising a person who wants to resell the item and not collect it. Why the fuck would you take something so rare and valuable to a pawn shop?
Unless you've got a serious heroin addiction, there is no reason to pawn anything off.
like most people, he just wanted to be on TV.
+AlexCoronaPhoto He might want to use the TV show to authenticate his work. Then sell it on Ebay at his best price.
+AlexCoronaPhoto advertizing it to other potential buyers

i like the not-so-friendly friendly rivalry you two have. it's great.
-"You can leave now"
I laughed so hard
Yeah... If I could afford it I would definitely hang a genuine 17th century German Zweihänder on my wall! Much cooler than any poster or painting!

why not when you can chop off some buzzing mosquitos in cave with this sword :P
Why don't you shove it up your man cave?
"roughly perfectly balanced" 😞
Yeah, thats a bit of an odd statement. It is perfectly balanced and holding it with 2 hands you actually put 1 hand above the guard and 1 under.
Thanos would not buy this, only perfect balance is acceptable!
That is a "Flamberge" or "Bidenhänder", used by Landsknechte, who were named "Doppelsöldner", double Soldiers, who fought in the 30-Year War in first Front - they got the double payment.

What an awesome and interesting piece..thanks for the lesson Craig!
Craig is so funny lol he’s like “it’s just so cool, I feel so powerful!” Hahaha

The second a seller argues with the expert, you know a deal ain’t happening.
You never go to the pawn shop for something like that! Thats stuipd! You go to an auctioneer, and a reputable one at that.
So1othurn exactly. It's like bringing a diamond to a second hand store...
Stronghold crusader in back playin at the start , some sounds from that
Lop off pole-axe tops? Doubtful.
+Sparrowhawk he said Polaks
Even if he said 9 million he would still say.. it's worth a lot more...that all he can say!!

17 th. Century two hander. I call bs
Why?
First glance at the thumbnail, I thought it was Seth from Hardcore Pawn. I was like "Oh shit Seth's working at Pawn Stars now?"
This is such bullshit. Firstly, this is a Zweihander, not even close to a broadsword. Second, it wasn't used against cavalry, only against Pike formations. It should weigh around 8 pounds, not 14. Does he know anything about these weapons?

Soligen Steel once one of the best! Or Krup then the Scots Claymore.
Craig is my favorite expert.
0:41 is this the sound from Stronghold Crusader when you lead a big army?
I think I've seen Craig blink twice in everything I've seen him in combined

"I'm taking all the risks here" WHAT FUCKING RISKS
Just look at Craig's face when he lifts the sword.
I wish Craig was my global history teacher back in high school.
Should I put a lightning stone on this or just raw+10?

He was geeking over that sword😂
It's the sword that Siegfriend/Nightmare uses from Soul Calibur based on! :)
Man- WTS Armadyl God sword.

Cutting even a man in half is a near impossible feat (in combat that is and don't forget that they often wear steel armour which isn't going to be cut by anything really), the wood used for polearm shafts is very resilient as well.
I wouldn't mind being Infantry if I were rockin this bad boy.
The fact that he was able to balance a 15lbs sword on his delicate hand is surprising 🤣
Thats why Mark the beard of knowledge dont give out the price he dont want to be put in the middle.Very wize man.
Nice sword. Looks like it's been refurbished. The Pummel is pretty shinny and hmmm that old of a sword
The leather is amazing condition
But still a really nice Two handed sword !!!!!!!!
I can imagine a 7ft soldier holding that badass sword and slicing enemies up lol.
These two did lots of shows together.
